Game 32: AE Championship – SBU v. Vermont
« on: March 07, 2016, 11:21:42 pm »
VERMONT

21-12 (11-5 AE)
Last Game: W, 63-56, v. New Hampshire 3/7
Last 10: 8-2 (won 8 straight)
Last 2 Seasons: This year – SBU 72-61 there; Vermont 76-62 here. Last year – Vermont 71-57 there; Vermont 57-48 here; SBU 79-77 there in AE semifinals
Notables
6-2 so G Trae Bell-Haynes 11.7 ppg, 3.4 apg, 1.2 spg, .481 FG%, .789 FT%, .423 3 pt FG%
6-9 sr F Ethan O'Day 11.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.1 bpg, .549 FG%
6-3 rfr G Ernie Duncan 11.2 ppg, .839 FT%, .436 3 pt FG%
6-6 jr F Kurt Steidl 11.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.0 spg, .810 FT%, .374 3 pt FG%
6-2 so G Cam Ward 9.7 ppg, .810 FT%, .372 3 pt FG%
6-1 jr G Dre Wills 8.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 spg, .584 FG%

Nervous about this one. A lot of shooters, good guards who can penetrate and dish, and they're on much more of a roll than us, having won eight straight. They raaaained threes on us the last game (10 for 19), with Duncan nailing all four of his en route to a career-high 23. The last four games – four players who have led them in scoring, and they've had six different leaders all year (the aforementioned six). They have shot almost 49 percent from the field, and nearly 39 percent from three.

Bottom line, we have to play a real strong game on both ends to prevail here. UVM has a surplus of confidence now and they destroyed any kind of aura in this building a week ago. We can't brick threes (5 for 15 last game) and can't brick free throws (7 for 19), and we have to win the battle on the boards. Second-chance points will be enormous.

Hartford really lagged off of Walker and thankfully he had the sense to not fire away after the first few minutes. I expect similar treatment from UVM. If Walker's defender drops back and defends Warney, that accomplishes two things for the defense – eliminates the entry pass to our best player, and encourages our least effective shooter to shoot it. The entry has to come from Puriefoy or Woodhouse. I like Walker if he can get amidst the defense and then dish.

Excited for this one, it's been a hell of a ride. Win or lose (preferably win) it's a privilege to see Warney, Puriefoy and McGrew play one more game at home. Given the stakes, I expect a close game.

I don't want to blame the last game on lack of desire but they played so flat against UVM. Not only that, UVM was hitting all of their big shots, particularly from downtown. Duncan in particular was on fire. When we got the game within 6, TBH hit a huge 3 too so its going to be imperative that we lock down on the perimeter. We also need to do a much better job rebounding than we did in the last game- we actually got outrebounded last game. Warney needs to have much more of an impact too- he had a really quiet game last time down. Again, that game against UVM just was a horribly played game fundamentally- you can't win games when you shoot 33% from the FT line.

Let's do this- I'm pumped and will be bringing a ton of energy to the game.

It won't happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing the fan base on their feet the entire game.  It's going to take a great effort by all 3,408 fans, 5 coaches,  Dozens of event staff, the team trainers and managers, every player on the roster.

How would one go about getting tickets for this game? I'm unfamiliar with the rules of the secondary market, but I cannot find them anywhere.

I believe the general public can purchase tickets in person at IFCU Arena beginning on Thursday.

Gotta get over the hump

Some people think just because we're not playing UA this should be a cakewalk into the NCAA. NOT!!!!.. Vermont got stronger as the season got deeper and is peaking at the right time. They are to be feared and if SB doesnt play at 110%, we're screwed.. I said this last year about Vermont. They started the 2015 season on a low note only to get better as the season progressed because of their rebuilding year. Now in 2016, they're better than ever. I am very leary of these guys. KenPom has us at 80% to win and win by 8. I say it's more of a 50/50 and a draw!!!!!!

Who are these people and why have they not been put in straitjackets? When the line comes out, we ought to be favored, but it feels more like a coin flip.

It's all about defending the perimeter. We're quicker, so lets get up on them. Try avoiding doubling or helping. Just play straight-up.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more Nyama in this game too. His quickness, versatility and length is going to be important, especially at the 4.

I am a little disappointed with the ticket policy for the finals. I did not have season tickets but I went to about ten games this year counting playoffs. Unfortunately I won't be able to get to the arena on Thursday to buy tickets because of work and I doubt there will still be tickets available online.

I thought SB's guards did a good job defending the perimeter. Hartford did not have many open three's. Credit to them for making so many contested shots.

I just noticed this yesterday, but SB is much better this year handling the full court press, and half court traps. Last year it was a real problem for them.

I of course sympathize.

with that said, a sign of the times that you cant get tickets to an SB bball game.  which is a milestone for the program (and far from the first time it's happened!).  so in a way this is great news.  just trying to soften the blow...  ;D ;D

My wildcard players/matchups to watch for SBU are the reserve guards. Appeared Nyama tweaked the leg/knee near the end of the game? Hope he's good to go. SBU got a solid 15 mins from Mitchell--good ball handling, tough defense, a couple of big 3's, to 1 TO. Really glad to see him contribute that way. Thrower got about 2 mins, so very limited, but looked to me he was on board to play some tough defense on Pancake while he was out there. I could imagine a similar need against UVM--give us a couple of tough, physical defensive turns against Ward, for example.

It wasn't long ago that it appeared there was a noticeable drop in SBU energy/production when Warney or Puriefoy left a game. I'd say that's gotten better. As the cliche goes, in playoff basketball every possession counts. With UVM's talented guards I think we're going to need these three to be ready and rock solid no matter what their role is Saturday.

Can never predict these games, can you? Both SBU and UVM are capable of losing this one big. My instinct says it will be, however, one of those gut-wrenching, back-and-forth slugfests.
