Happy with that 2nd half performance. This team has some guts and should improve as the season progresses.

I appreciate the optimism of the board, and will defer to the collective judgment of the group...since none of you have ever steered me wrong in the past... ;D

Next game I would like to see the zone cleaned up not so relaxed against the high post and contest better on shooters. Conceptually the zone should be good for us. Hopefully some of that offense in the second half rolls over go inside out not outside in. Opens up driving lanes and free throw attempts are good shot at about a 82 percent clip. IMO policelli is better served with that post up action rather than trying to force a drive or spot up threes. Like to see sarvan try that too.

One of the things I liked to see was Policelli being more aggressive in that second half. The shot wasn’t falling, and he only had three (all threes) in the first 20 minutes. So he posted up or put the ball in the floor and tried to get buckets in close or at the line.

Also, Pettway’s providing real value. He’s attacking the rim and looking to score in general, which I think this team needs a bit of. TO was doing the same. He’s going to be good. I wonder what happens when Clarke returns—maybe fewer minutes for Roberts, who I thought struggled.

I do think we were really at the mercy of their shooting. We barely attempted to get a hand in their face on most threes, and once they started go down, it got away from us.

But still, a real nice effort. A split in RI would be terrific, although we face another team hungry for their first win.

They looked better than I expected ( my expectations are low ). Get healthy, continue to improve, and maybe we can be decent in the CAA come conference play?

i agree with all the above, but for CAA play, i question this-

youre the coach.  its halftime and SB's down 4 on the road.  stat guy hands you a report in the locker room.  team is 1/17 from three.  do you,

(a) encourage more shooting
(b) bench those who keep shooting
(c) implore the team to remain calm and it will all work out
(d) stay silent on the topic

B or E (change the philosophy moving forward to drive to the hoop, and encourage jump shots only within the arc).

Hard to believe we only lost by 10 with 5-29 shooting from 3, and being out-rebounded by 11.  I liked what Pettway and TO offered, TSM played well, we didn't pound nearly enough with the Bigs, and think that Roberts cannot be at the point, as his dribbling/passing abilities don't cut it at this level.

Need Clarke, Frey, and Nahar back, to add depth to the team.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

1000%. Playing a really effective and aggressive 2-3 zone takes practice, drilling and repetition. For a first time appearance (I think), they did okay. If they keep at it, they'll look back at this tape in two months and be embarrassed.

It's not just closeouts. It's how your feet are positioned during a closeout that takes away options from the offense. It's timing on when to close out on the high post (delayed, with arms out to stop pass to short corner). It's making quick reactions without thinking about where to go. If they keep at it, it'll improve - AND IT'S AN IDENTITY!

Unfortunately they've been in the zone all 3 games. In fact it got carved up by a USCAA (not even NCAA) team on Friday and Geno admitted in the post game he probably should have switched back to a man-man once the started hitting 3's but was slow to react. Same story in the second half last night.

Ah, good to know. I didn't see the first two games. Small fundamental mistakes against good competition will carve them up, if not early, than later. Might not be a bad idea to switch from the 2-3 to man to a 1-3-1 and even calling blitzes on the ballhandler, etc, rather than sticking to one defense.
