Game 29: SBU vs. Vermont
« on: February 25, 2016, 08:14:23 am »
A couple of very interesting story lines for this game.

1.  Senior Night - the last regular season game for Warney, Puriefoy, and McGrew - in arguably the best, most successful senior class in school history.
2.  Playoff implications.  A Stony Brook win almost makes it a lock that the team would face Vermont right away again in the semis.  Vermont wins and the team to play in the semis is New Hampshire.
I can't see the coaching staff doing anything different then they normally do to manipulate who they play.

Since we haven't played since last Sunday, there is no need to rest anyone.  In fact if guys were rested here that would mean a 10 day layoff going into the quarters.  I don't think anyone thinks that could be a great idea.

From a purely basketball stand point, Vermont has the most skilled players in the league.  Their problem at times has been a lack of toughness.  They don't defend or rebound well.  They can shoot it with anyone.

Probably this is the best senior class yet.  Tough sledding from here on out with the playoffs.

Glad Salty used the qualifier "arguably," and it's a good argument (Jameel certainly tilts the discussion). However, the freshmen class of Tommy Brenton,  Bryan Dougher, Dallis Joyner, and Danny Carter is right up there (Tommy graduated a year later due to his knee injury).

The big difference for me is that this years senior class stepped into a winning program and culture. The other guys pulled the program out of the dregs.

Brenton was SB's version of Scottie Pippen. He did everything well. I think he is playing pro ball in Japan.

I may have used the qualifier "arguably." What I meant was, is without any doubt whatsoever, 100%, inarguably the best senior class ever at SBU.  Brenton's misses year messes with us a tiny bit, but we will go with the last four years and the four years prior to that (Dougher's four).  Under Dougher the team was 75-57 overall and 43-21 in conference play.  In the Warney era the team is 94-35 overall and 53-10 in conference.  This is a fun conversation to have when the final stats and awards are handed out, but the winning percentages for overall and conference are so overwhelming that you can really stop with any comparison right there.

You really think Vermont is the most skilled? I don't agree with that. I'm not saying we have the '92 Olympic team, but I think we have more skilled players than they do. UA does also.

No reason to get cute in this spot in terms of scheduling as you said. We need to get our tournament rotation in order. Hopefully we get some more clarity on how Kam and Roland will be used, and they seize the opportunity.

I think I'd rather face UNH in the semi just because I think UVM is more likely to have a big shooting night, but we need to finish the year with some momentum, especially after the break and with Sekunda's injury.

All true, my only point is that the Jameel teams walked into a winning program. When Brenton/Dougher/Joyner stepped on campus, the program was a mess (three previous years 20-67). They were the guys that pulled the program out of the abyss and got it headed in the right direction.

Do they re-seed in the AE semis? Assuming SB advances do they play the lowest remaining seed, or the winner of the 4-5 game?

I blame coach P again for this loss. Walker cost us the game. 23 minutes and 3 points but more importantly, points on turnovers from Walker killed us. Good job coach P for leaving Walker in the game for that long. Some people will correct me on this but whatever!

From a poster on another Forum.... I could not have said it any better.

"Wow! What a terrible way to finish the season on Seniors Night in front of a packed house. Getting crushed by UA and UVM, winning at home vs UNH by a point, not the way you wanted to go into the tourney. Pikiell could have played tonight 2 ways: play to win and carry momentum into the playoffs, or sit your regulars to avoid injury. He chose the former, and man, did they lay an egg. Yeah, losing this game meant nothing in the standings/seedings, but in sports, momentum is everything, especially in a 1-and-done playoff format.

Couldn't find a way to get Warney the ball again, Walker looking like a high school player, FT shooting that I could have equaled shooting lefty (yeah, I'm a righty), and losing all phases of the game. McGrew is the only one who came to play tonight.

After the season's finish, very low expectations moving forward. The pressure on Pikiell must be enormous now, and these poor kids must now have every doubt in the world creeping in on them. Right now, this team is in a state of disarray."

OK, so if he sits Walker and sits Kam, everybody's playing 40 minutes then I guess, right? I'm with you that the bench is a concern right now. There's no offensive spark that Sekunda used to give us. I'd almost rather see Thrower because I feel like he wants to shoot the ball. Just don't do it from outside 12 feet. Get to the goal. Kam and Roland just do not want to shoot the ball. Gotta rest the starters at some point. Oh right, Walker's a starter.

Meanwhile, Vermont shot it very very well, and somebody on the AE board said it was their most complete game of the season. Every time we got it within six, Bell-Haynes got into the lane and scored or they hit a three. Very deflating.

We missed a million bunnies. Not saying we win, but it's a different game if those drop.

Rayshaun was terrific and I thought Carson brought it too. I didn't like what I saw from Jameel tonight. It felt like he was getting mixed up in extracurricular stuff and he didn't have the energy on the glass that we're accustomed to seeing.

Warney, Walker and McGrew: 3 for 14 on FTs #gulp

Lost the rebound battle too, 37-31.

It's just far too difficult to get Jameel the ball. It's a different offense if the FT jumper is an option for either big.

I'm going to get on the announcer guy too. It is mandatory for all such emcees to start everything with "We're in Section ____"

Biggest positive: Great crowd. I'm proud of the student section, although they were missing their ringleader down by Wolfie. We're going to need all that energy these next two weeks. I implore them to encourage the season ticket holders to stand up in big spots. I feel like an idiot doing it if everyone behind me isn't.

Horrible loss

Short summary, Walker played horribly. He couldn't hit a shot and was a walking turnover machine. His airball 3 pointer was just awful.

Overall, we're going into the conference tourney with no momentum having been throttled by Albany and Vermont. It's gonna be a tough ride but we are going in with lower expectations.
