As disappointing as the season's been, we're still looking at no more than two weeks left until a long spring and summer before the 2018-19 tipoff.

So let's try to leave ourselves with a good taste in our mouths heading into the offseason. It will be tough, as we're likely in line for UMBC, Vermont and Hartford/Albany over the next (and likely final) three. The UNH game was a good start. We saw good energy from the guys in the second half – desperation really – and some nice moments from the freshmen. And geez, based on what Ball is telling us on the recruiting thread, we are going to steamroll people next year!

Some perspective on the job that Odom has done in his two seasons there. UMBC will be looking for its second consecutive 20-win season, this after winning 21 last year thanks to a run to the CIT semifinals. With this victory, that would bring their win total to 41 over the last two seasons ... or the same number of wins they had over the previous seven (2009-10 to 2015-16). They haven't won 20 in back to back years since 1978-79 and 1979-80, and if they win out and reach the conference title game, they'll tie the 2007-08 record of single-season wins (24). Long story short, we'll see how long he's there, particularly when you consider that Lyles and Maura are gone after this year. On the flipside, a nice new gym and some really good momentum. I tend to think that if a good opportunity arises he'll jump ship.

Part of it is that UMBC's offense looked so so fluid in their game up here. We were in that game, but that's in part because UMBC shot it so poorly. And they were open shots. In their gym, I think a few more of those go in and they beat us by double digits. Also, if Cornish is out, that likely leaves us with just Mac and UC to run the point. UMBC's guards are a nuisance, and a freshman and a fringe PG don't figure to fare well in that environment.

What's strange about this year for UMBC is that they've taken some BAD losses, in particular the loss by 44 at Albany, and the 28-point annihilation at the hands of Vermont at home in the debut of their new arena. The Catamounts shot 66% from the field in that one, including 21 for 27 from two. I watched a few minutes of that and UMBC was up on them early. Must have unraveled from there. Then again, maybe that's us in a few days #gulp

What I hope on Wednesday is that we see some of what we saw against UNH – an aggressive UC, an aggressive MacKenzie, crashing the boards, forcing turnovers, etc. And then for Akwasi to return to form after a couple of off nights.

i do agree that we looked a bit better against UNH.  this should be a tight game.  hopefully we've got the lineup straight (it's now late Feb) and i want to see ochefu (or even petras) in the paint playing physical.  go get 'em SB.

Of course odds are that SBU goes 0-3 in these last three games, so a single win from here on would be a big positive for this team this year all things considered. With Hartford on their tail UMBC will no doubt be taking all final games seriously to hold the 2 seed, so unlikely SBU catches them cruising. That said, as noted UMBC seems capable of having very off nights, which is probably the starting point for what SBU needs to sneak out a win there if at all possible.

Here's hoping even with a 0-3 finish that the three primary freshmen in the mix continue to play and gain confidence. I'm assuming Olaniyi is a pretty solid pick for the all rookie team, seems Ochefu is finding his footing a bit (I wish more of these big guys would develop the little jump hooks and more confidence with the "very short game" in this conference, as Ochefu seems to be showing hints of now. In this typically under-sized conference, I think a lot of these bigger guys could drop some consistent, maybe even serious, points with those shots every night...does anybody have Warney's entire career on video, and if so can you send it to Ochefu?), and I'm still good with Mackenzie (I like his toughness and smarts, despite the slow feet and terrible shot this year--I hope he spends all summer developing a serviceable long shot).

Call me a delusional homer, but in the AE, anything can happen. After all those years of screwing us over in the AE tourney, I'd love nothing more than to get Albany in the first round and win. I wouldn't say it's impossible, though very unlikely. It'll be nice to head into the tourney with nothing to lose for a change.

As disappointing as this season has been for me, I would love UA at UA, for a revenge factor from last year.  But, that gives us Vermont in the semis.

I think we match up better against UA, but going against Hartford gives us Hartford at Hartford, where we've already won this year, and I'd rather see UMBC instead of Vermont in 2nd round (if that's achievable).

I know we clinched 7th, but will us losing our last 2, coupled with UML winning 2 of 3, still clinch us 6th, or is there that possibility that we could still see UMBC in opening round?

How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

I think they re-seed after every round in the AE tourney, so a 5 seed gives SB the best chance to avoid Vermont in the second round.

Correct. They are reseeded. I could see us or UNH pulling off a first-round upset, but I can't see Lowell or Maine advancing. Then again, we lost to Lowell and could have lost twice to Maine.

If both of these teams could actually make shots, this one would end up about 120-110.

It's crazy. There are inspiring moments when this team looks like a strong America East contender.

Then we miss free throws, and it all falls apart, from shot selection to defensive inattentiveness.

Just outstanding D this first half. The 3’s are falling, but we can’t continue at this pace of shooting in 2nd half.

Not to harp on this again, but that five game losing streak was such a missed opportunity.

10-24 from the FT line in an OT loss vs UNH
10-20 from the FT line in an OT loss vs UMass-Lowell
Just 5(!) FTs in a close loss vs Albany
10-18 from the FT line in a 4 pt loss vs UMBC
11-19 from the FT line in a loss vs Hartford that was tight for 37 minutes

Honestly, if we win those first two games (UNH and UMass-Lowell), which is asking very little, just one extra FT each game, we're 8-6 right now, and although not ecstatic, we're at least content and feeling better about this team and the future.

Oh well,

I'm just restating how that tough stretch with bad luck darkens everything, just because of how good we look right now on the road against a 10-3 team.
