I might be wrong (and I guess this is part of the conversation this year for us) but I don't think the men play an 8/9 game. I think the AE women do, however. For the men I think they simply *ahem* do not invite the last place team to the party.
Anyone know, is that correct?
I wondered the same thing, but simply guessed that they'd follow the same format as the women. I can't think of a good reason why they wouldn't.

Sent a note to the AE, which confirmed this. No 8/9 game.
Good. There shouldn't be. I even laugh at the P5 conferences who invite all 14 teams to the tourney sometimes. At least there those are stronger programs who have a shot at the at large. At the low-mid major level, there's really no good reason your conference tourney should go past 8 teams. I'd argue it should be that way in general. Make the regular season at least mean something.
I'd even limit it to four teams. It's not in any weak conference's best interest to have a "lucky" weak team sneak into the NCAAs just to embarrass itself and the conference.
