First off, if we were just terrible at the free line instead of horrific, we'd have four more wins. We're so close. I feel like we're outplaying teams, but just not capitalizing on that from the line.
I think we're playing the style of ball (pace and space from deep) that Coach Boals wants to play and is, honestly, the smart way to play in this modern version of basketball.
The problem is that we just don't have shooters. Yeboah, for sure, and Sekunda every couple of games or so, and then U.C. every blue moon, but that's it, and that's just not enough. And yet, we're so close, a couple of free throws away. Honestly.
A team that can't shoot free throws isn't going to make threes. That's basic. You can't find a poor free throw shooter who excels from deep. And we have a bunch of bad free throw shooters on our roster right now. It takes a ton of work to improve. That's what the offseason is for.
And even though his roster right now doesn't fit what he wants to do, I don't think he should adjust his style this season. We're playing for next year anyway. Boals recruited Olanyi and Cornish and McKenzie and Long, knowing the style he wants to play. Let's hope they pick up their shooting in their debut seasons, and that this is just an acclimation period (I think Olanyi is gonna be a big player for us, btw, from deep or not). You can throw Garcia in there too. He's shaking his rust off.
Let's assume Latimer and Ceesay (and Moor) can shoot, otherwise I don't know why he'd sign them. Let's see Chef play more because he's gonna man the middle next year. And once Yeboah learns how to play aggressively without fouling, he becomes our constant.
I still believe in Boals.
