First off, there's a good chance that UMBC will be without Lamar, who's risen from a reserve to a key piece of UMBC's success. However, he hurt his ankle during or after the Albany game, and has missed the last two. I wouldn't mind if he took a few days to heal up.

We know all about the guards, who are at least in the discussion with TBH/Duncan and Nichols/Cremo for best backcourt in the conference. Lyles is capable of monster nights, like the 34-point effort he had on Saturday against Maine – which helped him secure AE Player of the Week honors. He's had four games over 30 this season, including a 31-point night at Arizona in November. I think it's one of those things where you're happy with him getting 20 but don't want him to have one of those outrageous nights. He can score anywhere from in close to downtown, and also, he's killed us from the line even if it hasn't yielded many wins. Maura is exactly what we need – a floor general who can shoot. They'll be on the floor for about 34 minutes apiece on Wednesday.

But they need a supporting cast. Akin has recently emerged as a force inside for UMBC, going for 9 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against Maine in a career-high 27 minutes. Pair that with his 8 and 8 night against Binghamton and he earned his first AE Rookie of the Week nod. Based on what I've seen, he isn't terribly gifted offensively but is an athlete and gives them good energy underneath. That's enough for me.

I thought we had a great first half defensively against Albany, and I won't even complain about the second half – Nichols got hot and we stopped scoring. We have to defend the three here. UMBC averages more than 28 three-point attempts a night, and rightfully so – they're making them at a 40 percent clip, so about 11 per game. Look at those numbers from their top four scorers – yikes. So, as you might have guessed, that's how UMBC lost 83-39 at Albany last week. They went 2 for 20 from three and got manhandled on the glass, 40-23. Get out and defend and we have a chance.

By the way, we beat UMBC 83-39 back in 2013, holding them to 10 second-half points and finishing on a 69-16 run. We were actually down 23-14 at one point in that game. Think about that.

If UMBC wins, it will be their first win at our place since 2008.

Jay Greene  and Brian Dougher had some great duals when we played UMBC .  More than once they beat us especially at their place . Both guys have moved on and UMBC is rebuilding a respectable program .  Could be a tough night again for SBU .

"Lyles and UMBC should be a fun team to watch" is kind of where my head is at with SBU right now. Hope it's a good game. There's also the fact that this is still the AE and there are 8 games plus playoffs left.

Better start doubling Lyles or he’ll be dropping 40 tonight

we were abysmal for 15min.  then we came alive for about 90sec (mostly yeboah) to tie.  he's 7/7 at the line and 2/5 from three.

hey what's that thing called where BC takes the ball and throws it from one player to another?

Why did Boals stop with the trapping that worked so well getting them back in the game and giving the team some needed energy?

That’s the play out of the timeout? That’s what was drawn up?

Watching this team is pain...

I think I need to just stop. It's a lost season anyway.

so we lose by four at home.  here's the questions im asking-

we shot 10/18 on the stripe (an improvement!), shall we work on this?

we opened the game with 1 of 9 threes and kept shooting them, finishing 7/26.  anyone think with those 19 misses we couldve taken a two and maybe hit it, maybe twice?  combine that with 5 offensive rebounds and we simply do not have a chance to win.

with seconds left down 2, we got the ball to our big, standing well behind the NBA arc for a hail mary.  i guess there's no real question here.

our starting big goes 1/5 from three.  and 1/5 from two.  no fouls drawn, 4 TOs.  do we even want an inside presence?  lyles pulls 9 boards?  maura three???

outside presence- lyles is great, but 21 attempts plus 6 more from three?  the only had the ball for 20min!

another conference game that we deserved to lose, which is now every conference game we've played in.

I hate to bash, but after the masterful job he did last year, he’s taken a large step backwards this year. Dubious player rotations, allowing his kids to take questionable shots, poor offensive flow, horrible end-of-game play design, etc. Very frustrating since IMO, we have more individual talent on this team than we did last year. Yeah, we desperately miss Woodhouse’s leadership, but this boulder is picking up steam heading downhill, and appears to be out of control.

P.S. can we dedicate an entire practice to just FT shooting please? I’ll even volunteer my time to teach technique.

Probably Bing has the cellar wrapped up, but a real battle building among UML, SBU, and Maine for the privilege of playing UVM in the first round of the AE playoffs.

All the same stuff that needs fixin' still needs fixin' for SBU. As noted there is some serious discord right now in any waning pressure situation. Timeout, no timeout...doesn't seem to make a difference. It just looks like mass confusion and desperation out there.
