What do you get when a crummy team forges ahead having lost an all-time talent? You get this edition of the UNH Wildcats, who appear lost without Tanner Leissner as their anchor.

A couple 20-win seasons and postseason appearances probably bought Herrion some time at UNH, but before winning 59 games over three seasons with Leissner on the roster, he had "led" the Wildcats to nine straight losing seasons. They took a dip again last year, and now they’re back to being totally irrelevant in the America East. But like Maine, it's a tough place to win –zero tradition, poor facilities, cold weather and fan indifference (note the 340 fans at the UMass Lowell game on Wednesday).

Don't just blame it on Herrion. They've been bad forever, going back to Phil Rowe before him, Gerry Friel in the 80s, and just about everyone in the program's history. All time, only one coach who's coached more than 20 games has a winning record, and that was Butch Cowell (119-59 from 1916-1928), for whom the FOOTBALL stadium had been named because he won doing that too (87-69-24 from 1915-1936). Otherwise, wow, an impressive run of futility. New Hampshire has just ELEVEN winning seasons since World War II.

I'll keep from piling on, although maybe it's too late.

Let's look at the positives. First, they come to the Fed just three days after their first Division I win of the year, a truthfully quite startling 68-64 triumph over Lowell, which ended an 11-game slide. They did it with major contributions from three freshmen – Martinez, Guadarrama and guard Marque Maltsby – and an emerging sophomore – Hopkins. A bright future! Well, it's a nice win for them to build off of. Except now they face the middle of the America East order in succession – at Stony Brook, home to Vermont, at Hartford, home to UMBC. Still, maybe Herrion has a corps of kids to work with going forward. The aforementioned newcomers have displaced guys like Elijah Jordan and John Ogwuche, who played significant minutes last year.

This is a perimeter oriented team though. Reed is far more comfortable hovering around the arc than taking it to the rack. Hopkins may lead the team in scoring but he isn't a cold-blooded killer who is going to consistently score off the bounce and at all levels. Watkins is a good-sized kid who's come on of late with increased minutes, stringing together four straight double-digit nights, including a 24-point, 11-rebound night against Dartmouth not long ago, but even leans on his jumper. They have very little inside and aren't drawing contact – note that they've made as many threes (141) as free throws (by contrast we are at 120 threes and 279 free throws). We just have to be careful that nobody heats up and beats us with a freak shooting night. It's hard to see it happening though. They just don't have the horses.

Fun fact: according to RealTimeRPI, New Hampshire is the worst team in all of division 1. That's right, #353 out of 353, worse than D1 newcomers North Alabama and Cal Baptist who just moved up this year. There's a reason this conference is in the toilet when it comes to overall strength. Us and Vermont carry this league, everyone else is bad, but UNH is real bad. Pretty sure our D2 game was better than this.

If there was ever a game all year we were going to win by 25+, this is it. We let Binghamton hang around for way too long last night. Can't have that on Saturday.

Hate to sound like this one is in the bag, but maybe a good game to get some extended minutes for Christie and Long.

11 winning seasons since WWII?   Ouch.........

Check out their year-by-year records. They are staggering. It’s not like they have hovered just under .500 each season and that skews the numbers. They have been horrible. https://unhwildcats.com/sports/2015/6/30/MBB_0630154725.aspx

New Hampshire is what we call an RPI anchor. Hell, they're the definition of an RPI anchor. Literally the worst team in division 1. If how our backups played against Binghamton is any indication, we couldn't play any of our starting 5 at all and still win by 20.

Yes, I expect big minutes for Long, Moor, Christie, McKenzie and others. I'd also love to see guys like Foreman, Aubry, and Ceesay get significant minutes as I have yet to see any of them play this year, and if there was ever a game for it, it's this one.

We've talked about moving to a better conference before, but when you've got programs like UNH in your conference, you really have to think about what the hell you're doing when it comes to your athletic affiliation. Most of the AE at least puts forth some effort, UNH just doesn't seem to give a damn.

I don't think Foreman is eligible to play until next year, given the NCAA transfer regs.  And I'm guessing that either Aubry or Cessay have been redshirted for the year - hardly either have logged any minutes this year.

I totally forgot about Ceesay and Foreman.

Foreman will slot in effortlessly with his div 1 experience and further 1 year practice with current roster. But is he a ball handler?

Ceesay is a PG. Pretty tall too for that position for AE level, 6-4. Hope he is developing well.

We will be loaded next year if Yeboah stays.

When you guys talk about Yeboah leaving, you're talking about him leaving for a P5/Big East school?

I figured we had a couple guys redshirting, I just wasn't exactly sure who or if the rules were like football where you could play a few games even in the year you redshirted. Good stuff. I love having depth at every position.

I think the concern is he will leave to play pro ball in Europe like Roland Nyama, but I haven't see any indication that he intends to leave early.

You have to remember, he's a Senior and 22.  Would love to see him stick around for another year, but if he has any professional basketball ambitions, I'd expect him to bolt after this season, while his stock is high.  Can't see him pulling a Cremo (UA -> Villanova) next year.

Yes...like the puppy duo.. Cremo to Nova and Nichols to FSU. Puppies would have been neck to neck with us and Vermont if they had stayed. I think Yeboah is on his way to graduate early. And then there is the Nyama route. I hope he stays like Warney, takes us to the dance and becomes a SBU legend.

So, I did a quick lookup:

Cremo is averaging 20 minutes per game for Nova, and is averaging 5.8 PPG; Nova at 12-4 is currently ranked # 26 nationally

Nichols is averaging 19 minutes per game for FSU, and is averaging 7.9 PPG; FSU is at 13-2 at ranked #13 nationally

Yeah, they're role players for big time programs, but I'd rather be The Man on a mid-major with a chance to take them to the dance.

That's just me.
