So we've seen these guys before and barely escaped in our own place. What kind of result can we expect in the rematch? What's changed to suggest anything different?
Well, for starters, Quinnipiac's playing some pretty good basketball. Since falling 71-61 here, QU has won three of four games, most notably a road win over a decent Dartmouth team (which beat Albany twice already ... and I think Albany's better than 4-9). Kelly returned for their game against us and it seems like he's immediately gotten that offense going. They've had their three best shooting nights in the last three games, two of which were wins. The threes are going down, the assists are up, it's starting to come together.
The kid Williams has also settled into a nice role offensively, scoring in double figures in each of the last four games. Between he and Kelly, that's a nice backcourt for the next few years.
In our first meeting, Young murdered us from the line, knocking down 15 or 18, much of it in the second half when we watched a 17-point lead dwindle to just two until. In the end, though, Garcia and Olaniyi knocked down big free throws to stem QU's upset ideas.
The offense starts with Kelly, and I think we did a better job on the second half the last meeting. Still, you can expect him to drive and find an open shooter beyond the arc, which is where QU likes to do its damage most. The percentages there are up with Kelly being back – or it could just be coincidental but I doubt it. Kid's good.
Let's continue doing what we're doing. Boals said in the postgame that he doesn't want one loss to turn into two. Hofstra played a whale of a game to come in here and win, but let's turn the page and get this one. Attack the rim, get on the glass, contest threes, and we should be good.
