Once again, the Scarlet Knights will tip off in the friendly confines of the RAC, where they’ve gone 10-2 on the year; that’s right, they’ve played once on the road and got blasted at Minnesota. They followed a similar strategy last year, only to open up the year 11-2 on their way to 15-18. But still, Pikiell’s got this program trending upward in a big way, both short term (see this weekend’s win over Seton Hall) and long term.

If you recall, last year went the way that many of this year’s games have gone for us – up in the second half, only to see the favored team come roaring back. Made threes (we had 13) kept us in it, but a 15-0 run and a lack of an inside presence on both ends did us in eventually. Nigel Johnson had a game-high 21 off the bench. He passed up the opportunity to finish his career at Rutgers, instead transferring to Virginia, where he’s their fourth leading scorer as a grad student. Besides the result, it was a heck of a fun night to have a B1G team at our place. Coach P – all class.

Rutgers has been fine in spite of Johnson’s departure. The main reason has been the emergence of freshman Geo Baker, who played his HS ball up in New Hampshire. Baker played his AAU ball for a former player of Karl Hobbs, who’s now an assistant with Pikiell. AAU and the college game #smh. He’s second behind Sanders, and his 17 points was second behind Sanders’ 22 in their triumph over Seton Hall, a game that drew the largest crowd at the RAC since 2002. The 34-11 edge on free throw attempts didn’t hurt (they’ve taken 292 to their opponents’ 197 this year).

I love Freeman’s game. Just a junkyard dog kind of player.

Like you’d expect from a Pikiell-led team, they’re going to fight tooth and nail on the defensive end. They currently rank THIRD in the country in points against (58.3) and FOURTH in field goal percentage defense (.363), not to mention 16th in rebound margin (+9). I also came to expect a lack of flow offensively from our teams under Coach P, and Rutgers is experiencing similar issues it seems. They can’t shoot from two or three, or at the free throw line. I’d like to think this game is up for grabs, but the one thing that we haven’t done well with is pressure on the ball, and they’re going to make us fight for every basket. The perimeter shots have to go down, and we can’t have a million one-and-dones. I’m hoping Elijah digs deep and has a great homecoming, and Akwasi continues to progress as our lead dog.

Pikiell's team just pulled a huge upset against Big East #15 Seton Hall Pirates. Arguably his biggest career win. I'm happy for him. But not gonna lie that I miss him running this program and the rest of the team (Dougher!!!) :( . It hasn't felt the same every since.

I'm hoping that we can play well against them. I don't think a win is realistic. But just keep it close boys!

I disagree. I like what Boals is doing. It took Pikiell 12 years, or close to that, to get too his first NCAA tournament. Lets see how long it will take Boals.. Give the man time. He is playing with Pikiell leftovers so time is needed for Boals to have a new, 100% squad.

Boals has big time experience coaching at Ohio. Lets see what he has under the hood in another year or two then lets pass judgement.

I wish I was saying the same thing about our Football team. New coach on the team I mean!!!!!

I think with some luck we win 12-15 games this year .  Next year could be a turnaround year .  We get a legit 7 footer  and some more scoring to add to our young  roster .  Hopefully we see Garcia this year I don't know how much longer they can keep him on a medical leave . Boals has at least one more scholarship to give for 2018 hopefully another big around 6'8 . I hope also Ochefu  gets in the mix  more.  So far he hasn't shown much  but a lot of potential with his size and reach .  Who knows we win it all again in 2018-2019 !

I'm still bullish on this year. Weren't we only supposed to win like 7 games last year? Look how that turned out LOL

Come tournament time, we'll be ready. Upsets happen all the time in the AE tourney, usually with us on the crappy end of the stick. Maybe it changes this year.

Have any proof that Christie is legit? I can’t remember the last legit 7-footer in the AE. Or do you just mean that he’s legitimately 7 feet tall?

We should get to five wins with Norfolk State, and then a .500 conference record gets us to 13, a little better than that to 15 or so. I think 15 - and .500 overall if we split these next two - is a reasonable expectation with this group. We’ve been good enough against good competition to get there.

Based on a small sample size, Christie is definitely a project, but definitely better than Petras or Campbell. He is a prime candidate to redshirt, but with the lack of size next season, SB won’t have the luxury to sit him for a season. If he was any good, he wouldn’t being going to a AE team.  Like most big men entering the AE, he lacks body control, which makes him very susceptible to foul trouble. Also, like most big men, he is extremely slow to react to ball movement.  He needs more playing time and hopefully, gets the necessary big man coaching over the summer. It is very evident that he hasn’t received the necessary coaching to become a guaranteed good player in the AE.  Well, you can’t teach size and he does have time to improve.  He needs to attend a Jack Sikma Camp 😉, where he would learn post moves and not waste time running up hills on the north shore of Long Island 😂.  Lastly, I don’t think he’ll wake up one morning in his 4/5 years at SB and believe he’s a 3-Point shooter! 😂

Leading up to tipoff, a really nice read in yesterday's Asbury Park Press. Love the opening anecdote.

The MacDuffie coach has been posting highlights from the teams games on twitter #32. Note the MacDuffie coach has been bringing in some really good talent recntly and they are quickly becoming on of the better NEPSAC programs.

What's good is he looks strong enough to play college basketball which is rarely the case for 7 footers at our level. My hope is that he's ready for a role of the bench next season just standing in the pain and altering shots in relief. Hopefully by the time he's a junior, he will be a problem for opposing teams.

Good find. I'll reserve judgment

The kid Dana Tate (#12) is a three-star who's going to Rhody next year, Austin Nzige (#1) will be off to Rochester.

They also have Ismael Massoud who has BCS offers in the 19 class http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/ismael-massoud. I thought they had Dalano Blanton as well, but i guess he transferred out.

For no real reason, I think Stony Brook is going to win this game. Calling it now.

Want to second this. If nothing pops up, I'll probably try the sketchy feeds available from vipbox.eu or whatever it is. Make sure you're running a pop up blocker if anyone else gives that a try.
