Off we go.

We're undergoing a bit of a reorg, but Maryland is going to be trying to figure things out themselves. It's the first time since the spring of 2014 they've played without Melo Trimble, who has to be considered an all-time Terp in the one-and-done era. He kind of failed to launch after a banner freshman year, but was nevertheless a steady hand for three years.

I see this being an ugly game with two teams trying to figure out how their offense is going to operate without their leader. Particularly in a bigger arena.

Going up against a Power 5 program, I'm always concerned with how we hold our own on the glass. Cekovsky killed us in limited time last year, and ended up missing half the season with a broken ankle (he's still not 100%). The kid Fernando is their top recruit, although he's questionable to play in the game with a left ankle sprain – he's expected to miss tonight's exhibition. I have read that he and Morsell are both high-energy guys, with Morsell serving as a shut-down perimeter defender.

The three sophomores all averaged close to 30 minutes a game as freshmen – think about that. That's a lot of quality run against Big Ten competition. Huerter was the most highly touted of the three out of high school, having been named Mr. Basketball in New York in 2016, beating out, among others, Vermont's Anthony Lamb. Both he and Jackson are big-time shooters. Without Nyama, I wonder who draws the other team's best player – perhaps Saintel – and hopefully Olaniyi is a quick study. I actually liked what I saw from Long defensively against CSI.

We gotta watch out for Justin Jackson. He is an NBA level talent and might be top 15/20 talent in the draft. I watched him play last year. Great talent. He is gonna light us up if we can't check him.

PS two Jacksons to watch out in Big10 this year, play for two teams we will be facing: Maryland and Michigan St.

I think they're really hoping Jackson can be The Guy this year. He is considered one of the top 21 small forwards in the country (http://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2017-10-18/college-basketball-21-players-named-2018-julius-erving-award) coming into the year. Had some huge nights but also nights where he disappeared.

There seem to be mixed reviews on him for next year's draft. As high as 6 according to the Ringer, a few in the mid to late first round, and a second rounder or worse in others. In a big-heavy 2018 draft, I expect he'll slip to the 20s as a guy who isn't someone who can just fill it up. Either way, it's safe to say he's the best player, or at least the best prospect, on the floor next Friday.

It's funny how, if you're a sophomore in a Power 5 conference, you almost are written off as an impact NBA player in many people's minds. "Why didn't he come out after one year? He must not be that good."

That's such a backwards way of looking at it. I certainly hope only the "experts" employed by ESPN among others are the only ones perpetuating this garbage and not the decision makers within the organizations.

Yep!  I was there.  Seems like a good bunch of guys.  Confirmed that Cornish will be out 3 to 4 weeks; he was not on crutches and walked out of the tunnel onto the floor with only a mild limp.

Spoke to Garcia for a little bit.  He has no brace and says his leg feels pretty good, but admitted he's not quite 100% yet.  He had another MRI in the past couple of days, and it seems that he'll still be out of commission a little while longer.. Everyone else looked itchin' to go!!

I went. Boals did a nice job. Pikiell used to go on and on about each player (and that's what McCombs did). Instead, Boals spoke briefly before saying he felt it was important for the kids to feel comfortable speaking in front of people, so down the line they said their names, years, hometowns and majors. It was a nice touch, kept people's attention, and was brief yet informative. I don't recall him doing that last year.

A few other nuggets:
  • Free gift for MBB season ticket holders is a sturdy water bottle and some SBU coasters – both fairly useful.
  • Also, for STH who didn't pick theirs up last night, the package includes a voucher for two free football tickets to the 11/11 game.
  • For reference, it's pronounced Oh-LA-ni-yi.
  • The men are scrimmaging BC this weekend at their place.
  • Boals confirmed 3-4 weeks for Cornish.
  • Before saying "business", Iroegbu joked that he majors in "buckets." I'm OK if he's a double major!
  • The women's exhibition against Adelphi on Monday 11/6 (7pm) is free to the public.
