I watched a decent amount of the game. Here are my thoughts:

1. I guess the coaches have no faith in Alonzo Campbell- Petrus is just a big body, gives 110% but doesn't have much skill. On a good team he wouldn't see significant time.
2. UC Iroegbu really was just chucking bricks in the first half- I hope this was just a bad game for him.
3. Kam Mitchell also was fine seeing spot time last year- he's not a DI level starter

Now the good:
1. Akwasi Yeboah looks like the real deal- he's aggressive and strong. Not a bad job for his first game.
2. Junior Saintel has good size but he needs to be a LOT more aggressive.
3. Sturdivant played hard, he's made big strides. Nyama similarly played well.

Overall, I'm sticking with my preseason expectations. Vermont will be the class of this league. Albany and New Hampshire will fight for second. The rest of the league is not that far apart.

I can't believe how big of a rebuild we are seeing this year. Boals needs to find a rotation that works. The only people that should get guaranteed time are Sturdivant, Nyama and Woodhouse at present. Yeboah showed some skill and aggressiveness and is close. Sekunda still needs to get his feet under him but his best role would be 3 point shots off the bench. Iroegbu needs to improve a lot. Almonacy played tentatively and I want him to play with a bit more of an edge.

Albany beat Penn State . I think UA and Vermont battle it out in the Championship this year. SB will finish in 6th place

That about covers it for now, Wolfie MD. Well stated.

I think it'll be a rough ride this year. A lot of work to do with perhaps, at best, a shot at 4th in the AE (along with a big crowd of other teams).

Very poor shooting from SBU. Difficult to tell if it was just maybe one of those nights, or not. Imagine the same game and they shoot 50% from the floor and at least 65% FTs...maybe they win handily and we're saying not such a down year after all?

I actually have higher hopes than most.  Also, Stony Brook played worst the last season two season at home against Columbia!

Columbia wins by 7. Crazy 3 pointer at the shot clock buzzer seals it. SBU has work to do. There are some things to build on.

I actually think SB played better then I thought they would..

Woodhouse and Mitchel stunk it up
Petras, well is Petras
The rest of the team I thought was ok. I'm not sure why Boles didnt use Sekunda more then he did.
Not much more to say except I am sticking with my 8 wins this season.

I definitely take over on wins!  How much do you want to bet? Sekunda had limited minutes because he nowhere near in game shape!

I will stick with 15 wins which may be a stretch. Poor shooting and poor from the free throw line. With no real go to guy for 20 points this team will struggle.  Best thing is the new guys will gain experience this season and hopefully we see improvement in 2017-2018.

SB doesn't have a low post guy to rebound and man handle for the ball. I did see flashes of Warney with Yeboah, even though he is listed as a guard and not a foward. Petras and Campbell appear to be useless as our go to big man..

I guess I'll put in my two cents as well, based on all the previous comments:

--First, I think it's only fair to give big props to Nyama, who I thought did an excellent job, both on O and D\
--Next, I feel that Mitchell always seems to get a bum wrap.  Credit where credit is due: he went 3 for 3 from the field, made his only foul shot and played his usual good defense-including drawing another one of his patented charges
--In my opinion, Yeboah is an all-around beast and bound for stardom in the AE
--Woodhouse should, by now, understand when he's hot and when he's not.  He took some ridiculous shots!
--Coach B. obviously sees something in Iroegbu that I don't.  He was 0 for 7 from the field, and just kept shooting.  I think he performed similarly in the Farmingdale game.  Why does he start?
--I would like to see more playing time for Saintel.  He's a joy to watch.
--Sturdivant got SBU's first double-double of the year-and add 2 blocks and 2 steals to that.  He seems much more aggressive around the basket this year, and I think he'll be a force!
--Disappointing night for Sekunda, but he'll be back
--HERE WE GO AGAIN.  THE OVERRIDING REASON FOR THE LOSS, EVEN WITH THE POOR SHOOTING PERCENTAGE, WAS INABILITY TO MAKE FOUL SHOTS--A SEAWOLVES TRADITION, UNFORTUNATELY!!  C'MON GUYS-RUN THOSE FT DRILLS 'TIL YOU DROP!!!!!!!

This year is a freebie as far as I'm concerned. With next year's recruiting class, we will be very good. Ochefu is going to be a beast in the AE. I'm not sure about McKenzie or Corry Long but Elijah Olaniyi is also IMHO going to be a steal.

Again, my biggest concern at this point is that the coaches see nothing in Campbell. I was really hoping that he'd be a steal and that, with his redshirt year, his game would elevate. He's definitely not going to be a bruiser but you can't teach a guy to be 7 feet tall. Again, if he was a talented 7 footer, he wouldn't be here but I digress.

I was only able to catch the first half, but I would say I was encouraged. Three of our starters were playing in their first division I games. The team is only going to get better.

Also it seemed to me that Boals was giving the players to green light to try to make plays on offense which I love. I thought everyone was being aggressive off the dribble trying to get into the lane. At times under Pikiell, players seemed to be too afraid of making bad plays leading to a stagnant offense. Granted the aggressive play last night lead to some wild shots and turnovers. I think it's going to bode well for the team down the line once roles get established.

We knew that we were going to take a step back. There was plenty of evidence to confirm that last night. If we converted a few more of the makeable shots, maybe we're talking about a season-opening win. I saw a lot that I liked, guys. We're going to compete every night.

First things first, I loved the defensive intensity. We really got after it in the second half and made Columbia uncomfortable. Early on, though, they had too many easy buckets, and obviously shot it well overall. I hope that we can duplicate that effort every night, particularly on the road.

Poor shooting night for us – I'm hoping it's a one-off. 35, 26 and 57 just isn't going to cut it. I was surprised to see Iroegbu starting opposite Woodhouse and I'm hoping that's based on faith that he can shoot it a little. I have to think he's better than what we saw.

We had it at 65-all late. When we need a bucket, where's the ball going to go? It starts with Woodhouse, but who takes the shot? It looks like the offense is going to run through Yeboah and Sturdy. In the second half, there had to have been three or four straight possessions where they fed Sturdy on the block and let him go to work. We didn't see that at all last year. He set a career high in minutes and shot attempts, tied his best in points, and notched his first career double-double. He'll have to finish better – and he may with fewer trees (Columbia had a fair share) – but altogether a good night for him in my opinion.

Yeboah seems like a junkyard dog type – average athleticism, some ability inside, good shot, good motor. A few are ready to anoint him and it's a solid debut for sure. We'll see though.

We saw more aggression offensively pretty much across the board. Woodhouse looked for his shot more (still not enough), and the same with all the vets. I was glad to see Nyama turned loose. His energy, athleticism and perimeter shot are going to have to be there every night this year. I thought Kam played well – don't see how anyone could say he was awful.

Just 16 minutes from Saintel.

We won the rebounding battle. Love the work on the offensive glass. Yeboah and Sturdy with 10 offensive boards combined.

Stage was a little big for Almonacy but he'll develop.

That Campbell and the two walk-ons were the only ones not to see time says all you need to know about what Campbell's going to contribute this year. Hopefully next year at this time he's a contributor off the bench.

As for Boals and the coaches, I thought the ball moved well offensively and we played hard defensively. Solid debut. A few more makes and we're in the win column.

Good post, Checkmate. I saw a lot of plusses last night. In particular, good ball movement on offense. Very few turnovers and forced shots. A lot of open three's that I think the SBU guards will knock down at a better rate than we saw last night.

Saintel and Yeboah will contribute a lot this year. I think Mitchell will also play a bigger role, and played well last night.

The SB fans need to step it up. Disappointing turnout.
