Wow, wish I could share the optimism, but didn’t see a lot to get excited about. Just launching 3’s indiscriminately. Fitzsimmons not impressing me on either end. Sarvan looks like a ball player in how he handles himself. Hope 2nd half is better. Obvious major talent gap,

Against this lineup with these athletes, who do you recommend we pound the ball into? We are 3 for 11 from two.

Quality of shots is very poor imo.

Not sure who was out tonight for SB, or when they'll be back, but Sarvan and Fitzmorris both looked OK (despite possibly a combined zero points in the paint). Frey will not need much encouragement to shoot and brought a lot of effort. Not sure how any of this will pan out in conference play, but nothing I saw made me feel optimistic.

About 10 points worse on offense than you would've liked. Thought Sarvan and Frey looked like players. Policelli and TSM played tough. NEED Clarke back. Toby needs a lot more experience before he can play point guard against a power 5 (not his fault). But if you look at a potential lineup of Clarke, Frey, TSM, Policelli, Sarvan I think we have a chance to compete. Can fitzmorris cut all those 3s out?

A 36 point loss is what you would expect of a team at the bottom of the conference. More of the same from last year, unfortunately.

Less enthusiastic after that second half, but still, it was Florida.

Positives:
- More movement without the ball
- As a result, better interior passing. In general, I saw better team basketball rather than standing around waiting for a guard to do it on his own, or oftentimes just chucking a three. Even when they went in, it was bad offense.
- Frey will be good. It didn’t look like too big a spot for him. For him to come out firing? I like it. He came flying off screens and was ready to shoot. I think his long threes will be typical threes in conference play.
- The announcers. I thought they were great.

Negatives:
- Interior presence. We got very little from Fitz and Sarvan inside, on the glass or protecting the rim.
- TO has to look for his shot more. I thought he was fine taking it up and getting into the offense, and he’s quick, but he has to find a mid-range game. Maybe it’s there and just not tonight.
- Same for TSM. As much as the iso-heavy offense was painful the last couple years, we do need some of it. I was hoping to see TSM be more assertive offensively and be a 15 shot a night kind of guy. Still possible.
- Fitz from deep. Yikes. I dunno, guys.
- In general, almost nothing from the bench beyond Frey. Roberts the same, Pettway probably a spare part, Muratori made the trillion club except for turnovers and fouls. Are we really looking at being seven deep with Clarke?

I’m really eager to see us against the middle 75% of the country rather than blue bloods or nobodies. I think we’ll have a better idea of what things will actually look like.

Some additional thoughts and questions: I think TSM showed tonight he can be more of a Tykei Greene type than an Anthony Roberts type, which I'm happy about. 9 boards is legit against a big Florida team. I think you also saw that Policelli is willing to take on the role of go-to scorer with 9 shots and 7 free throws (can he make a few front-ends?). Sarvan looks more like a stretch 4 than center. Can Fitz be a true 5 against smaller competition? I didn't hate the minutes we got from Kaine tonight but says a lot that Toby started over him. Only 13 tonight from Castleton so maybe our newfound length at least had some impact in the paint defensively? Do we think Frey has more of a Joe Cremo or Bryan Sekunda upside?

Just one game against a very athletic, middle-of-the-pack SEC team.......

Things we had under our control, which I didn't like:

- 6-28 from 3-land (a common theme under the Ford regime).  Lots of those were poor shots, IMO, with some launched from 25+ feet out;
- 7-13 from the stripe (need to do better);
- Point guard play was poor, due to youth/inexperience, so we really need Clarke (experience) in there;
- Our 2 big men didn't impress me much, but it's only 1 game, and Castleton is a beast to play against;

Things I liked:

- Policelli a bit more assertive than usual.
- TO with 9 boards.  He's a great leaper;
- Sarvan looks like he has a sweet shot, and handled himself on the court well IMO.  He needs to start.

As an aside, how did Policelli go from a Redshirt Junior last year, to Graduate Student?  Guessing this is his swan song year.

Yup, it goes with the territory.

Some thoughts I have from this outlier game. I liked how assertative policelli was made some nice passes. In general i liked the ball movement. Frey quick trigger a little too quick but he’s a freshman. Toby will eventually be a good player. Sarvan is a 4 not a 5. Fitzmorris should not attempt another 3 and him and Rocco did not look great hopefully against different competition that changes. Schedule going from a ascending SEC team to a D3 team is a weird. Tsm played hard loved that he will get on the glass. This will be a year of team effort that must be spearheaded by TSM and Policelli and clarke when he gets back which didn’t sound soon from the announcers.

Perfectly sums up last night's game. Hopefully Clarke is a pass-first PG, that can drive to the basket.
