Exhibition: College of Staten Island 10/27

COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND
16-17 Record:
21-7 (16-0 CUNYAC)
Notables:
6-5 sr F Kevon Murphy 13.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg, .554 FG%
6-3 sr G Edin Bracic 10.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.8 spg, 1.1 bpg, .374 3-pt FG%
6-3 jr G/F Robert Rossiter 7.0 ppg, .458 3-pt FG%

No reason to overanalyze this one. I'm sure we roll and get a chance to see everybody. They've all been working hard in practice so I'm happy they'll get ample minutes.

It will be good to get a game – even an exhibition against a D-III two weeks before the season – under our belts before Maryland. What I'm mainly interested in finding out ...

  • Who has the lead on the PG job? And what does the rotation look like in the backcourt?
  • Can Ochefu impose his will down low? Is he a much-needed rim protector?
  • Is Saintel looking to score?
  • Are any of the newcomers legit perimeter defenders? Kam and Nyama aren't walking through that door.
  • Is Olaniyi primarily a jump shooter, or is he looking to create?
  • Will Garcia play, and if so, how does he look?

CSI returns three starters, although it lost one of its all-time greats, Frank Schettino, who at 5-foot-11 led the team in points (18.0), rebounds (7.2) and assists (9.2). He's now playing pro ball in the Mexican League.

SBU up 49-33 at halftime. No individual or team stats are up but it’s been pretty balanced. Good flurry to finish the half.

Most noteworthy by far is that Cornish is on crutches with a massive wrap up over his left knee. Looks real bad.

All things considered it was a good game. Cornish as you said  his leg was rapped and Garcia still in a sweat  suit . The injury bug . Mc Kenzie at point will be fine  he can pass off ,steal and hit his shots. The other new guys are a little tentative  but that is normal . Opening day jitters and no major mistakes . Could be another good year .

How did our seniors play. Tyrell. Jakub, Sekunda?? Why is Garcia always injured.... Does Cornish injury look to be season ending and did he get hurt in the game or did it happen prior..

Seniors played O.K. for the most part.  Jake and Sekunda played limited minutes, with nothing especially noteworthy.  I thought Tyrell looked very nimble; seems to have managed to move around more fluidly.

Garcia had surgery for a torn ACL (injured senior year in HS) beginning of last season.  Probably not quite fully recovered from surgery yet.  If you remember, Sekunda took quite long to heal from his, and wore a brace almost all of last season.

Cornish came out for the Star Spangled Banner already on crutches.  I'm guessing injury happened in last practice.  I feel bad for the kid; he seems to have legit talent.  My guess is that he will redshirt and take his shot next season.

I really like McKenzie and Ochefu.  Things look bright, but Maryland may crush us.  If so, it will be the first of many major learning experiences.

Would assume both teams had somewhat different agendas for this game, so always difficult to get a sense of things from these scrimmages. Props to Staten Island. After obviously getting stuck in traffic and arriving very late, they came out scrappy and hitting playground shots to grab the lead early and stay close in the first half. They have a platoon of good guards that hustled, shot well, and regularly double/triple-teamed SBU to give them fits (until SBU got better at seeing this coming and rotating the ball in the second half, which put that pressure to rest).

Mackenzie looked poised, simply looked like a "leader" out there right from the start. Had the look of a potential 4-year starter at point. While not great competition, he was smart with the ball and delivered a lot of solid passes.

Ochefu is a BIG body who looked nimble and shot well in warmups. During the game he looked a bit lost out there and didn't do too much against the small bigs of SI. We'll see how he develops, but he's a guy who could have massive potential in the AE.

Olaniyi played a lot and looked solid out there on the wing. Long played a bit less, I think, and is a stringy, athletic kid. Think he needs to put on some weight and muscle in the next couple of years. Cornish, yes, hobbled with a big wrap and ice on the leg.

All the returning SBU players did fine, enough to pull away and win in the second half. Mostly looked like they were just trying to get their legs and not get hurt. In terms of overall it just seemed SBU imposed their will and big bodies down low in the second half and also did better reversing the ball out of double-teams for open shots. It allowed them to pull away with the score, and that's about all that was along with getting to run up and down the floor in the arena for the night.

It'll be interesting to see how this team develops. Have to assume the rookies are going to play a lot this year, as they represent Boals's future team. We've had a number of years having THE guy who can lead and score, and this group doesn't look like it has one of those, at least yet. Are we going to have a platoon of 10+ guys each getting 5-8 points? Is someone or two going to break out this year and beyond?

I’ve heard that Cornish’s injury is nothing major. We’ll see about that. We need him because some of our guys acted like they’d never seen a double team in their lives - some really ugly turnovers. I felt much more confident in the offense with McKenzie out there, much like last year with Woodhouse.

Among returnees, I saw a more nimble Sturdivant as Gold said before - he stuck a 3 too - and a more assertive Saintel.

I agree with a lot of what's been said. I think Olaniyi is the teams go to perimeter defender. He was given the assignment on #4 of CSI who was hitting most of those circus shots early in the first half. McKenzie looked solid. He's going to have a great career. Ochefu passes the eye test in a major way. Players with his frame, size, and motor just don't play in the AE. He's not there now, but I think he's going to be star  in the AE. The returners all played well I thought and had their moments. Yeboah, whom I think will be the teams leader in points, was pretty quiet yesterday. I'm going to chalk that up the strange pace and rhythm of the game.

I’m curious how well McKenzie shoots it. Considering he’s likely going to be the primary ballhandler, we really need him to knock down free throws. Woodhouse was almost automatic. Mac’s jumper looked a little flat to me, and he missed a few free throws too. I don’t have the stats but I recall the whole team shooting pretty poorly from the line.

Thanks to all for the great analysis in the early-going.   Didn't see any mention of Almonacy from anyone.  Does he figure to be playing at all this season?  Back-up point or 11th/12th man?

Actually, Almonacy scored 14 points in the game, including excellent shooting from the FT line.  I expect that Mike will play a reasonable amount of minutes during the season.  Cornish is expected to be about 3 to 4 weeks with his knee injury, so that will certainly solidify the need for Almonacy to play and perform well.  After all, as much potential as McKenzie showed, he is only a freshman.
