America East attendance
« on: February 01, 2016, 10:38:53 am »
Home attendance halfway through conference schedule. If it stayed like this, we would lead the league in attendance for the first time in a loooong time. Maybe ever. I'm guessing ever. Last year, our 2,785 average was second to Albany with 3,390. In the 10 years prior to that, we were around 1,500 a night, aside from the '07-08 season when we dipped under 1,000.

That is impressive over 3k per game. I was impressed with the Albany game when we hit 4109. Really a home crowd advantage.

Nice attendance.  I think it will be tough for us to hang onto the lead.  Albany still has to host us and Vermont.  The Vermont game is also their Big Purple Growl event.  Both of those will be sell outs.  We have Vermont still but on a Saturday night.  The other 3 games we host are not going to be high attendance events.

Good job by Binghamton rallying around a terrible team. They're second in attendance for the women's games too at 1,472 a night.

Tops among women? Maine at 1,786, or 500 more than they get for men's games and 1,000 more than we get here.

I think we'll have great attendance the rest of the way- its really an accomplishment of the whole department. Ten years ago, no way you would have convinced anybody that 3000+ would consistently come to Stony Brook to watch college hoops.

Long Island fans really enjoy basketball- I hope college football catches on like college hoops. College hoops is as good as its been on the whole in the NYC area with Hofstra, Stony Brook, and Monmouth both legitimate teams that can make noise in the NCAA tourney. Unfortunately St John's stinks and I don't see them turning it around anytime soon.

February should be huge crowds IMHO- the student section will be packed...heck it was jam packed even before the official move in date in the game against Albany.

I was just thinking this morning of the 2009 game in November against SJU.  I headed over to carnesecca and we were likely outmatched.  we ended up losing by a bit but we hung tough for about 3/4 of the game.  I was happy with that.

it's nice to see how far we've come since that game 6+ years ago.

I really thought the el amin / joyner / dougher / brenton squad was going to make it one year.  let's not have that happen with the current squad.

Great to see, and I remember sitting in the new arena when it was really new and being able to shoot a cannon through the space and not hit anyone during games. The marketing/success/turnaround of the attendance and team has been great in a rather short amount of time. Kudos to all at the university who have worked to make this happen.

Here is my one and only gripe: Hey you season ticket holders with the good seats (you know who you are)--come to games and sit your butts in your seats or give them away to deserving people who will!

I'm referencing the UA "sellout," as I had a couple of friends email me after the game noting how many empty seats (down low, esp behind the bench) were visible on TV.  :o

Listen, I know ponying up the bucks and providing that support gives one the right to come or not come, I just wish there was some honorable way to fill those close seats if they are empty (especially for TV games). A little bit like Yankees games, no?, when those expensive corporate seats down low often sit empty. Oh well, guess that's just a byproduct of the times.

I remember in 05 or 06 I went to see a Stony Brook game against Lafayette at the "old" arena. It was in December- not kidding but maybe 250 or 300 people were at that game. All I can remember was that it went to OT and Stony Brook lost. By 2010 there was a line a mile long to watch conference games against Bingo at Pritchard.

Downgrading to Pritchard ended up being a short-term blessing because the team was not ready for a bigger arena.

Didn't we play all season in Pritchard and then switch to the big arena for the AE title game at one point?

It was actually 2007 now that I think about it- this predated the move to Pritchard. They were still playing in Stony Brook Arena (RIP) at that time. Horribly generic arena, don't miss it one bit.

Actually found the boxscore LOL. Those names are a blast from the Stony Brook past. Actually the game was in November and the announced attendance was slightly north of 700...it was definitely less.

This is in regards to Moveitfred's comments about the ritzy people's seats behind the scorer's table.

Those seats suck!  They did a terrible job with the height of each teir so you cannot see in front of the person in front of you.   You are craning and moving all night to look around the people in the row right in front of you.  I have sat in those seats several times and my season tickets are up above in the upper deck and are so much better to view the game.  I totally agree with the sentiment though - get to the game.

(I'm being a hypocrite btw.  I live 3 hours upstate and go to way more road games than I do games at The CredU)

>>>>>Those seats suck!<<<<<

1000% agree, Salty. I sat in those seats prior to pickin' day and even though I knew none would be left with my poor spot in line I thought, "Man, these are bad seats."

To add, cheerleaders NEVER bop over there to throw t-shirts over the team.

My wife and I have followed the program since 1 year before the arrival of Coach P.   First game ever was blow out by Dartmouth took us apart by at least 20 points.  That was followed by a close loss to Colgate .  Need less to say we have   come a very long way  and hopefully moving forward each year.

I sit in those seats :)

Super comfy to be honest. Yes, you have to crane your neck at times but it offers a good view of the game. Last year I moved elsewhere for the conference tourney to get a different vantage point.

The food situation is great down there though
