Heilbron is a cheerleader through and through. Visionary, ambassador, supporter, all fantastic. But evaluator of talent? I dunno about that.

Unfortunately, when you lay it on that thick, it's more difficult to believe. TPP and TSM are HIGH-major guys all of a sudden? Akwasi, who starred here and would be in the discussion to have his number retired if he stayed, just transferred to Rutgers. Rotational guys Moor and Long just transferred to Texas State and Southern New Hampshire. So you're telling me that these incoming players went completely under the radar and should be playing P5 basketball? What did he tell us about Moor and Long?

Hey, I hope he's right, but ... have you seen Vermont's roster?

Well said. But you have to give Helibron credit. He is the most positive person I think I have ever spoken to. He definitely knows how to rally his troops. But, I still se SB finishing 500 this season.

I didn’t mean anything negative with the “cheerleader” comment. To have an AD who’s this involved, enthusiastic and transparent is a major plus. If you want to talk high major, he’s a high major AD. BUT I’m hesitant to take his on-court evaluation as the gospel.

You’re right.  Tempering the enthusiasm is sensible.  That said, Ford can coach, Weber can recruit and take a look at Mo’s film - he looks like the freakish athlete SB doesn’t usually get in any sport.  It may take awhile.  We’ll see.

We'll have some serious competition in the AE this year, but this is better than a .500 team. I expect 20 wins and a 2nd or 3rd place finish in the AE. He's a cheerleader for the team, but at the same time we're basically getting four starters back from a 24 win team last year. No reason to be a pessimist.

Quite frankly. I dont think 500 is a pessimist at all. This is a rebuilding team from top to bottom. From an entirely new coaching staff, players and heck! Even a new president. Going 500 for year 1 of a new team is expectable, respectable and plausible.

If this European trip pans out they can clear up alot of the rough spots as far coaching calls , players and playing together as a unit .   Six games against  some good competition  will help us organize for Yale and the others. Not worried about the  wins in Europe just  start to gel as a team .

I don’t see how this is a rebuilding team “top to bottom” when 9 players are returning players. Again I don’t see how is this “entirely new” coaching staff when the Head coach and assistant Head coach has been with us since 2016 albeit in different roles. The AD specifically chose continuity over top to bottom rebuild.

No doubt Vermont will again be the cream of the crop this year but I fully expect us to give them a run for money.

America East schedule is out. Of note, we travel to Vermont the first weekend, and finish at Albany and UMBC, both likely top four seeds.

Open practice download!

- First off, personnel. We have two new players – 6-2/183 soph guard Quari Alleyne  (#12) and 6-4/215 jr G Lenny Kadisha (#24). Alleyne last played as a reserve at Herkimer CC in 2016-17 before, according to a Statesmen story, walking on last year with Aubrey. I don't recall his name though. Kadisha played minimal minutes alongside Mouhamadou Gueye (pronounced GEE supposedly ... like the beginning of geese? or geez?) at Monroe. I don't suspect either will play anything more than mop-up minutes.
- Hassan Ceesay: out for the year with a torn right ACL. Sucks.
- Frankie Policelli: I was told "50/50 at best" for him to be eligible this year. He did participate in practice with the team, but I was a little underwhelmed. Is he more than just a spot-up shooter? In a practice in which the guys were getting after it, he was didn't seem as enthused.
- Geno kept on saying "the defense is ahead of the offense" and that our halfcourt offense has to improve as these guys get used to each other and how things are done.
- We're playing three games against pro teams in Europe soon – two in Spain, one in France I believe. In other news, Jaron Cornish recently signed to play professionally in Spain but we're not facing his new squad.
- I went in wondering where we were at with point guard. It looks to me like Makale Foreman can very much handle the position. I'm guessing he starts with McKenzie and Tavin (pronounced TAY-vin) Pierre-Phllippe behind him. Foreman's going to be a dude. He felt like a veteran presence out there, and I think he's a guy who's going to really look to fill it up.
- Speaking of Pierre-Philippe, I think he'll be an asset down the road but probably not a ton this year. I have Tyler Stephenson-Moore a little bit ahead of him. TSM looks smooth. He knocked down open threes, looked comfortable in the mid-range and was more explosive than I anticipated. Defensively, both TSM and TPP looked the part to me. Granted, this is an amateur eye making an assessment based on a single practice.
- Miles Latimer looked like he put on muscle. The roster lists him at 6-3/192 – same as last year – but just looked more filled out to me. The hair's shorter and (gulp) shorts are back!
- The guy you couldn't take your eyes off of was Gueye. He looked comfortable handling the ball, has a nice looking jump shot and can GLIDE. There was one break where it looked like he took off from the elbow and dunked it with ease. I mean, EASY. It probably wasn't the elbow but he is some athlete. His numbers weren't much at Monroe so I'll reserve judgment before anointing him a star.
- Otchere looked like Otchere. He and Gueye will be tough around the rim but I hope they can stay on the floor.

Thanks for the pre-season update!  Great info!   Really bad to hear about Ceesay - I wish him a speedy recovery; I liked him in the few minutes we saw of him last season.  Read an article recently that said that the NCAA is tightening up on waver granting, as those applying for them are at an all-time high.  Maybe Policelli's enthusiasm last night was reflective of pending denial.  Really glad to hear about Foreman, as the point was a major concern going into the season.  Maybe Gueye will be the X-factor this season, like Garcia was last season.   Congrats to Cornish; he definitely upped his game last season.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

Ditto. Thanks for the updates. Looking forward to you game previews.

There’s a reason Policelli couldn’t crack the rotation at Dayton and transferred. But I will be optimistic and may be  what Oldseawolf said is true and that he is feeling down due to pending denial. He does have Div 1 b-ball body and height. May be didn’t put in the effort and work at Dayton. Hope he learnt from that.

Good to hear about Makale playing well. I have been hearing in this board, I think it was from greatK, that he was the best PG in practice last year. So can’t wait to see him on the floor this year

At a glance, Foreman reminded me a little of Puriefoy. I never looked at Puriefoy (or even Cornish) and said "that guy's a point guard" but he's a pretty good hybrid of the 1 and 2 – certainly good enough at this level to play the 1, and somebody who can be dangerous playing off the ball too (Cornish less so). Similar build to Puriefoy, not a pure distributor, looking to score. I couldn't tell whether he was willing to finish at the rim like the aforementioned alums, but the jumper was smooth.

Without any input from me, a friend seconded my note about Policelli's energy. You know how Almonacy looked sometimes, just kind of going through the motions? It was kind of like that.

I liked the on-ball defense that I saw from TPP and TSM. Guys were in people's faces all night, fighting through screens, diving on the floor on occasion, etc., and they seem to have bought right in.

OOC home schedules by comparison. Sub D-I opponents are italicized.

VERMONT: Boston U, Gallaudet, Towson, UNC Greensboro, Lipscomb, George Washington
UMASS LOWELL: UMass Boston, Jacksonville, Merrimack, Dartmouth, Brown, Central Connecticut State, Sacred Heart, St. Francis Brooklyn, Boston U
HARTFORD: Gordon, Emerson, Merrimack, St. Francis Brooklyn, Sacred Heart, Wagner, Cornell
NEW HAMPSHIRE: Curry, Holy Cross, Bryant, Maine Maritime, Dartmouth
BINGHAMTON: Sacred Heart, Army, SUNY Oneonta, Colgate, Boston U, Hartwick
MAINE: Merrimack, Maine Maritime, Dartmouth, Quinnipiac, Columbia
UMBC:
ALBANY:

What stands out to me is that Lowell has NINE home games before the conference season, including eight against Division I opponents. Fans have to be pumped up about that. Good ledger for the Catamounts too.
