It says something about how weak the rest of the conference is expected to be if the top team (SBU) is projected to be 135th best in the nation. NCAAs or not, there's no reason they shouldn't be a top 75 team at this point in the program's development.

I tend to agree with you, as well, ry1link.  But, don't forget that SBU is going to begin this season with 4 starters from last year no longer on the roster.  I think it's amazing for a sports writer to pick them to reach the NCAA preseason based upon that fact.  To rank them above no. 100 without having seen how this newly assembled team performs, would certainly have been going out on a long limb..  If the new guys perform as their capabilities indicate they might, I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually reach that no. 75 ranking that you talk about later this season.

Also two issues  that have hurt recruiting   was our gym and  our conference is not that well known. We played in the old arena and then Pritchard which are tough sells for a high level recruit  add to that our conference vs say the A10 or above you see the picture. I'm hoping the new venue brings in higher recruits   of A10 caliber players. We have been lucky landing players like Brenton, Warney, and Puriefoy.  If we can get  a couple of players at that caliber every season  we will be ok.  And I agree we are an untested team this season , if we start winning our national rank will rise.

Rumor has it that we tried to get St. Joe's to open the new gym and they turned us down.  For those of you thinking you might have had a chance to see Phil Martelli walking the sidelines of SBU Arena opening night I need to apologize.  I meant the D3 St Joe's of Patchogue.  They turned us down though.    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The new home of Ahmad Walker

He dropped down to JC level... I guess no other NCAA div1 school showed interest... I wonder now the reason for leaving SB was solely on Academics and not a dispute between Pikiell and Walker like some people were rumering..

I must admit I'm stumped here.  I keep looking at this link, but I don't see any reference to Ahmad Walker.  Can you steer me in the right direction?  Where's the info that says Barton is where he transferred?

Gotta be academics related- he's a solid basketball player and absolutely had DI talent. Him going the JuCO (in Kansas nonetheless) route just tells me that he wasn't going to qualify at the DI level.

The kid couldn't hit a 15' jumper and was always out of control on the fast-break - bye-bye! JUCO and D2 are more suited for his style of play.

Walker going JUCO is so that he can play this year and still have 2 years of remaining eligibility left.  Remember,  you have 5 years to play 4.  If he transferred to another D1 immediately, he would have to sit out the year (like Woodhouse).  He is a legit D1 player (lack of consistent jumper or not), and will certainly be back in D1 in '15-'16.

As per NYCWolf from BBforums...

this may be our sched:

so now SBU has

@ providence
@ Georgia
@ cincy
@ western kentucky
@ gonzaga
@ Hofstra
@ Canisius
LIU(another fallout from the NIT)
Columbia
Loyola
D3
Also heard maybe American

Sounds challenging, yet exciting to see the Wolves play some high caliber opponents and quality mid major teams
