I understand is a one year commitment. But dayyyum... it would suck if you are one year or two years into your education and then they take away your scholarship and you gotta pay your way or call it quits. I would feel bad for the "student"-athlete. I guess thats how it works though

So much for Coach Pikiell being on the hot seat!!  Notwithstanding SBU's inability to reach the big dance to date, I for one, think Coach has done a great job--AND, he and his staff continue to do an excellent recruiting job.  Hopefully, we'll see the fruits of that in the new arena this season.

Why would Pikiell be on the hot seat?  We should be so lucky he's staying.

We are lucky.  He has a perfect graduation  rate, is involved in the community, is a  serious internal donor to the university. Plus if you ever meet him on or off the campus he is a genuine  person happy to be there .  Got to talk to him last summer at the football scrimmage  against Penn.  No attitude , talked about his family , the new arena .  He will also bounce a player who doesn't live up to expectations. He benched El Amin for  making a team meeting  late the year he was POY.  So his can be stern but fair.

True, scholarships are awarded on a year to year basis. While there have been examples of low-rent coaches "running off" players, generally speaking players can count on having their scholarships renewed each year unless there are academic or disciplinary problems.

In this circumstance, has Coach Pikiell ever demonstrated the type of character void that would result in him running a player off and not honoring the scholarship? C'mon, people. Get real. If somebody does leave, it won't have anything to do with Coach P.

Would  hate to lose Coach Young but he deserves his shot. He paid his dues as an assistant.

I don't want to sound selfish, but I'm thinking about the team and not him.. I know he has paid his dues and is a very good assistant but I rather he stay here.. If he does chose to leave for Maine so be it, Pikiel will do just fine without him.. He could be a perfect replacement for our head coaching job when Pikiel does inevitable leaves!!

If it is Mayo would that open up one slot for another scholarship offer this year??

Nope!!  Sorry, Hammer.  The reason someone has to go is because the transfer in of Lucas Woodhouse into SBU required a scholarship slot which didn't exist.  So, there is no additional slot open.

"While only a junior eligibility wise, Mayo – who missed his true sophomore season in 2011-2012 after undergoing knee surgery – is a senior academically and will be graduating in May"

I'm glad he at least finished his education. I would hate to see a guy pushed out while compromising his academic future but I know Coach P. is better man than that.

Not sure if its already been mentioned on the board, but "Stony Brook and Hofstra will begin a home and home series starting next season in Hempstead" per Rothstein. #LIvalry

And we are also going to Cincy, "Cincinnati will host Stony Brook next season as part of its non-conference schedule"

https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/sta...49102150819841

Couple of great non-conference games. Long Island rivalry game against Hofstra would no doubt generate some buzz locally. And a good test against last years AP #15 ranked Bearcats.

Last year, 2013, we played at couple of early season tournaments:
2K Sports Classic Benefitting The Wounded Warrior Project AND Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival

http://www.bloggingthebracket.com/2012/12/7/3739262/2013-14-college-basketball-early-season-tournaments-events-MTE

Hope we play at MSG again. Here is the link to keep an eye during slow off season to see if Stony Brook will be playing in any early season tournament in 2014:

Besides tournaments, I want couple of well known strong NYC/NorthEast teams on the schedule. Hope to see 2 or 3 games vs teams like Saint Johns, UConn, UMass, BC,  GT, GW, Providence, URI, Seton Hall etc.

Just did some digging on NYC Buckets - current  OOC  schedule   -Home - Loyola, Columbia
Away  NIT Pre Season Tournament, Cincinnati, Hofstra, Canisius , also heard Delaware was away game this year.
Kind of lean so far  but it  is June.
