I have to believe Walker and Burnett were red shirted  this season . They havent played a minute , Mitchell is a new addition.  If so thats four and we have 5 slots to fill- with Brenton, Bracey, Rouse, Hayes and  Resner all leaving.

Resner is a walk on - no need to fill that slot.  Nyama and Mitchell are taking two of the available sholarships leaving 2.  We have no pressing needs for next year so my guess is that the staff can hold out for a real reach or maybe fill in with a JUCO transfer or two.

I understand what you're saying about "...no pressing needs...", but let's not overlook what Brenton does for this team.  I don't think there's anyone on the roster now that can truly fill his role.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that SBU can land Devonne Pinkard (out of the Philly area).  My understanding is that Stony Brook is on his short list, and that he may make a decision this month.  From what I've seen and read, he seems to have a lot of skills, and I'd love to see him and Warney playing side-by-side up front!!

I guess what I'm getting at re: the redshirts is that I didn't think you just automatically became a redshirt by not playing.  Doesn't the coach have to make an official designation re: a particular player on the roster?  The current roster doesn't reflect either Burnett or Walker as a redshirt, so when does this happen?

A redshirt is designated after the season based on the fact that the player still qualifies for the redshirt. You have 5 yrs to play 4, any combo of that including JUCO or transfer. You can get a 6th yr due to injury. As far as suiting up for gms you can still be redshirted after the season even though you suited up. Example would be in football when Essington didn't dress for the playoff gm against Villanova, they dressed freshman QB Pat D'amato to replace Essington. In football you can dress for the whole year but still maintain a redshirt status if you didn't play. I would think the same rule applies to basketball.

My no pressing needs comment is based on the fact that both red shirts, Walker and Burnett play the Brenton position.  That is very likely the reason they both red shirted.  They can both play, but how much playing time were they going to get this year in Tommy's position?  If they averaged 10 mins a game I see the point of the red shirts where next year one or both of them can step in and play a ton on minutes.  Burnett is very fundmentally sound - has been very well coached over the years.  Walker is a best athletically and hopefully he is picking up the system well this off year.  When I also say no pressing needs what im getting at is that the team can hold off and try to land a reach player without having to worry about just filling the slot, like the kid from Philly you mentioned.  We have Warney - hopefully that will tempt some more 3 or 4 star players to jump on the Seawolf band wagon.

Obviously Brenton is a major loss, but I agree with this. I think the staff should be looking to get the best available players. JUCO may be a good route as it will help even out scholarship classes.

Besides Pinkard, anyone know of any players the coaching staff is targeting? I've seen reports they've been in contact with Chris Braley but don't know how much interest there is on either side

Speaking of Braley, he's going to be visiting Stony Brook today, so it definitely looks like there is some interest on his part.

He is one of the top recruits from Maine, and from what I've read he has a ton of offers from a lot of mid-major schools, including UVM.

Yeah , I looked back on the America East board and some of the UVM fans were really high on him back in the summer. Sounds like he would be a great addition.

Has anyone seen 6' 9" SF Luke Petrasek from Northport high school? Rivals says we're showing interest in him. I'd love to bring in a true local kid.

Edit: I found some highlights online

I like the athleticism - though it looks like he could use a good deal more muscle on that frame.

We're competing with Albany, Fordham, and Hofstra - though no recorded offers. He seems like a McAlister type player. You can add size, you can add skills, but you can't add height or athleticism. I like him as a frosh redshirt candidate.

Some potential good news!!

I just came across some current Twitter traffic in which Chris Braley was asked where he was going to attend college.  His answer was that he wasn'r signing an NLI, so "...he had some more time to decide..., but for now it looked like SBU".

I think he would be a great fit.  How about you guys?  GO Seawolves!!

What position does he play?

Nevermind: He plays SF position http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/122821/chris-braley

And found this link on AE message board by another SB fan

Seems like he has good shooting hand and has a shooting guard/small forward frame.

We need some good talents who compliment Warney's skill set for next three years! Besides good shooters and play makers, I feel that we also need a good tall rebounding center.
