he stands at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium are a sea of red on game days. Ally Kennedy will head into the crowd as total strangers tell her how great she played. Little girls pull her aside to ask for selfies. Later, those fans will stand in line and wait for an autograph.

Kennedy loves every minute of it.

She remembers when that sea of red was three rows of parents surrounded by a bunch of empty bleachers. This was a decade ago, during the waning years of Stony Brook’s pre-Joe Spallina era. Kennedy went to every game to watch her sister, Cori, who played defense for the Seawolves.

Forget the national rankings. Those Stony Brook teams struggled to crack the top five of the America East.

Now, Stony Brook is a perennial top-10 team and always in the national title discussion. The Seawolves seem to be highlighted on SportsCenter as often as the New York Islanders. Kennedy is on the U.S. national team and a contender for the Tewaaraton Award. Her coach calls her the best two-way player in the country.

There was no youth girls team when Kennedy started playing. She played with the boys.

Eventually her dad, Michael, helped start a youth team for girls, and Kennedy began redefining what lacrosse in North Babylon meant. She made varsity as a seventh grader. In 10th grade, her team won just three games. The next year, they made the playoffs for the first time in school history. They were overmatched, but it didn’t matter who was on the other side of the field.

The autograph lines grew longer. The red sea grew bigger. Veteran teammates like Kylie Ohlmiller and Courtney Murphy became national names, synonymous with Stony Brook lacrosse.

Being a super-skilled try hard can take a girl from North Babylon pretty far. In Kennedy’s case, all the way to the U.S. national team. She still remembers where she was when she got the phone call asking to try out.

Ally Kennedy, Women’s Lacrosse to Participate in Last Shift Campaign
https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2020/3/24/ally-kennedy-womens-lacrosse-to-participate-in-the-last-shift-campaign.aspx

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — In a time full of uncertainty, during which distancing is the new norm, Stony Brook women's lacrosse standout Ally Kennedy aims to bring everyone together through activism.

Kennedy has joined forces with fellow collegiate lacrosse players Grant Ament of Penn State and Michael Sowers of Princeton to organize The Last Shift Virtual 5K Challenge through the HEADstrong Foundation.

Anyone can participate in the challenge by sharing video of themselves going on a run on April 6, which coincides with National Student-Athlete Day.

"I think this is why sports are so great, because in a time of adversity we can all still come together for a cause that is so much bigger than ourselves," said Kennedy, who plans to return to the Seawolves for the 2021 season after having her senior year interrupted. "I know that my season was kind of ripped away from me, but the fact that we can handle the cards that we've been dealt and come together for a greater cause really shows the magic of sports."

The campaign aims to benefit and raise awareness for cancer patients, who are especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus.

Just days after the NCAA announced it was canceling all winter and spring championships, a representative from the HEADstrong Foundation reached out to Kennedy and asked if she wanted to be one of the campaign's organizers. She accepted the invitation without hesitation.

"Being selected to represent such a great cause and an amazing campaign is an honor," Kennedy said. "Coming together as student-athletes and as a community in general for a reason much bigger than ourselves is an opportunity I'll forever be thankful for."

Kennedy, as well as the rest of the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, will participate. They will use the hashtag #LastShift2020 to promote their runs via social media.

"The circumstances of our season ending so abruptly, especially as a senior, were devastating," teammate Caitlyn McDuffee said. "The Last Shift gives me, and every single spring and winter athlete, the opportunity to end our season on a positive note. We all ended our season the same way. So coming together while we're apart is a really good example not only for athletics but also for our country."

More information on the campaign and instructions how to register and donate can be found here.

AFTER SOUL SEARCHING, TARYN OHLMILLER SAYS SHE'LL BE BACK
https://www.uslaxmagazine.com/college/women/after-soul-searching-taryn-ohlmiller-says-shell-be-back

Quote
The Stony Brook teams of the last five seasons have been on the precipice of several final four appearances, starting with the core of Kylie Ohlmiller, Courtney Murphy and others. Taryn Ohlmiller and Ally Kennedy are the continuation of the recent trend, and that’s partly why a return is in the cards in 2021.

“We had so many pieces of the puzzle this year, and I really think that we were going far,” Ohlmiller said. “And talking to my teammates about it, I just can’t imagine not being on the field with my team.”

She said was accepted into a graduate school on Long Island and had a potential coaching job ready for her. But the allure of playing lacrosse with her Seawolves family for a final time was too strong a pull to ignore.

Although he made it clear from the onset that he wanted his seniors to return, Spallina said he didn’t push. He explained how he thinks coaches should take on more of a parenting role at this time.

“I met right away with our seniors,” he said. “It can’t be my decision, and this is what I’ve told them. I want every single one of them back because we’ve been building toward something for four years, but it has to be something that comes from them.”

HOW TO CATCH AND SHOOT ON THE RUN: A LESSON WITH KYLIE OHLMILLERhttps://www.uslaxmagazine.com/usa-insider/senior-women/how-to-catch-and-shoot-on-the-run-a-lesson-with-kylie-ohlmiller

Few in lacrosse — men or women — are better at catching and shooting on the run than Kylie Ohlmiller. The U.S. attacker with the signature eye black is nearly automatic when in stride, and she shared with us her keys to each step in the process.

Stony Brook's Joe Spallina expects summer recruiting to be affected by coronavirus
https://www.newsday.com/sports/college/stony-brook/joe-spallina-interview-1.43707179

Quote

Spallina’s oldest child, Joey, is considered one of the best boys lacrosse prospects in the country in his 2022 class. Spallina is used to waking up at 5 a.m. with Joey for a workout before both of their hectic schedules really start to pick up.

With the sports world coming to a halt in the midst of COVID-19, there is no guarantee that things will be back to normal over the summer. That's a time typically filled with big-time lacrosse tournaments that help players get seen and recruited. Spallina said Joey, who plays for Mount Sinai High School, has the luxury of having been seen during previous summers because he competes with older players. But not everyone is so lucky.

Being a college coach himself, Spallina knows how important these opportunities are. Coaches around the country travel to major tournaments to see players in person. He is unsure what effect the possibility of a lacrosse-less summer could have on players with college aspirations.

“June is not looking really good with club tournaments, not looking very good for summer camps,” Spallina said, “so there’s a lot of things that are going to be affected, and recruiting is going to be one of them.”
