Kind of funny how Women’s LAX gets minimized into just one thread while most of our other sports have individual sections. LOL. Despite being the best of us all

Given the predicted nice weather on Sunday (50 and sunny at game time)  in Stony Brook it would be nice to see a good-sized crowd for a matchup of two nationally-ranked teams.

Kennedy, Stony Brook Tame Tigers, 18-12
Senior Tewaaraton candidate Ally Kennedy posted a game-high seven points (6G, 1A) and grabbed a career-best 15 draws to lead No. 6 Stony Brook (4-1) past No. 11 Princeton (3-2) on Sunday afternoon. In a physical battle, draw controls were key for Stony Brook—the Seawolves outdrew the Tigers, 24-7, thanks in large part to Kennedy’s career day on the circle to go along with Charlotte Verhulst’s five draws, as well.

When the Tigers did gain possession, All-American Kyla Sears was able to capitalize. The junior attacker led Princeton with five points (4G, 1A).

Next up for Stony Brook? A trip to Los Angeles and a clash looming with the No. Trojans on Sunday afternoon. Princeton returns to action on Tuesday, March 17 in Jacksonville.

Ten goals, 22 draw controls and five ground balls.

Just another week in the office for Ally Kennedy.

Following dominant performances in a pair of wins over Towson and No. 11 Princeton, Kennedy was named both the US Lacrosse Player of the Week and the America East Offensive Player of the Week.

Women’s game against USC this Sunday has been canceled as per USC website. That is a bummer.

Stony Brook's Joe Spallina 'heartbroken' at cancellation of NCAA's spring championships

The NCAA’s decision to cancel all spring championships — in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball tournament — comes as a blow to the nationally ranked Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team.

The Seawolves are ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll.

“Heartbroken for our players,” coach Joe Spallina said on Twitter. “An incredible group of strong women that were having an outstanding year! So much hard work, team bonding and time spent together. Thank you to all my players parents and staff. So thankful & appreciative.”

In the wake of the NCAA’s decision to cancel the national championships, each conference now must decide whether it’s worth continuing the spring season, especially in light of the concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

The America East Conference, which includes Stony Brook, decided Thursday afternoon to cancel all practices and competitions for the remainder of the academic year.

St. John’s University announced it has suspended all activities for its 17 Division I athletic programs indefinitely.

The Colonial Athletic Association, which includes Hofstra, said “all CAA spring sports contests have been suspended until further notice.”

'Tough couple of days' for Stony Brook women's lacrosse after season cut short

And not even now, with the “good” news — the report Friday that said Division I players in spring sports will be allowed an extra year of eligibility after their season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The new normal isn’t quite normal yet, coach Joe Spallina said, and though the stakes are huge, it doesn’t make the everyday reality easier. The thing is, sports may not matter much — not when people are quarantined and some are dying — but what they represent still matters a whole lot.

The team went from ranked 12th in the nation to fifth, at last ranking. It has five seniors and Moeller, and had a realistic chance at a national title.

Spallina said the last few days have brought a lot of tears — from him, too. The NCAA’s announcement Friday did make it easier, and he already has heard from high school seniors committed to Stony Brook who are excited about playing with the graduating seniors they admire.

Senior Stars Grant Ament, Ally Kennedy, Michael Sowers Team Up to Support HEADstrong 'Last Shift'
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/senior-stars-grant-ament-ally-kennedy-michael-sowers-team-up-to-support-headstrong-last-shift-/56193

The trio of seniors are stars of collegiate lacrosse, and as they face decisions about their futures amid the shutdown of the NCAA season, they opted to do something to help the community.

Inspired by interactions with HEADstrong this spring, they are leading #LastShift2020. The concept is inspired by Nick Colleluori’s Last Shift. The most meaningful shift of his life was getting to lace up his cleats amid his battle with cancer, playing in a club game one more time.

On April 6, 2020, Ament, Sowers, Kennedy and their peers will participate in a virtual 5k in honor of the HEADstrong Foundation, spreading awareness for cancer patients who are at the highest risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus. Many of the folks that HEADstrong serves are amid the highest risk of the virus and need the most help.

For Ally, getting her senior season cut short is something she never imagined but is looking at this as a new opportunity to play for the greater good. "This campaign means a lot to me, being able to be a part of something that's much larger than myself in a time of adversity shows that it has always been more than just a sport for so many people," she said.
