TARYN OHLMILLER RECOVERS FROM ACL TEAR AHEAD OF NEW YEAR FOR STONY BROOK
https://www.uslaxmagazine.com/college/women/taryn-ohlmiller-recovers-from-acl-tear-ahead-of-new-year-for-stony-brook

Quote
Because of that same ACL injury, Ohlmiller won’t be able to play lacrosse this fall. She can go to the games, but she’ll have to stay on the sideline.

That also might not be such a bad thing.

The younger Ohlmiller, a third-team All-American and the team’s leading returning scorer (52 goals and 55 assists last year), will help fill that void. She won’t be cleared to play until the end of November, but she’s seeing how that could end up being a positive.

“You kind of get this coaching and leadership perspective that you wouldn’t necessarily get while playing,” she said. “Anyone who has torn their ACL will tell you that it sucks and that the physical therapy sucks. But being next to the coach on the sideline and hearing what he has to say can help you learn as a player.”

The game marked the start of an endless summer for Ohlmiller.

Typically, she spends three hours training each day. This year, she didn’t do much of anything for a month and a half. She’d hangout with friends and get so exhausted that she’d go home and nap for three hours. She endured long physical therapy sessions. She couldn’t play lacrosse other than wall ball.

Next week, she’ll finally be able to start running. She doesn’t expect to go that far. Ohlmiller’s teammate and roommate Caitlyn McDuffee tore her ACL three days after she did, so at least there’s someone to commiserate with.

She also still has her older sister to talk to. Kylie’s back home, setting up her own lacrosse coaching and clinic business. The Ohlmiller sisters have always sought each other out for advice. They’ve never been competitive. They prefer to have fun on the field, joke around, and feed off each other.

It was actually a change of perspective from Kylie that brought the younger Ohlmiller to Stony Brook. Taryn originally committed to Towson in 10th grade. At the time, her older sister wanted to do her own thing.

But things changed.

Stony Brook put itself on the national map during Kylie’s freshman year. They beat USC, Notre Dame and Florida. Taryn started thinking that staying on Long Island for college might be a good idea. So did her sister.

Once coach Joe Spallina got a hold of her, she had no choice. She could be close to home. Her parents could come to every game. She could play with her sister again.

That development has certainly benefited Stony Brook. The Seawolves have lost just three games since Taryn arrived on campus. Stony Brook is a destination now.

“When we were younger, we would go to Stony Brook to watch the big team that they were playing,” Ohlmiller said. “Now these little girls are coming to watch us play instead. I think that’s great for Long Island, and lacrosse and little girls.”

“I tried out and made it. And here I am.”

Perhaps no one personified this milestone tournament more than Tiffany Zullo, an assistant coach for Yellow Jackets 2022 Team Piscitelli (N.Y.). Before joining the Long Island club’s coaching staff, before her recently completed four-year career at Stony Brook and before earning All-Suffolk County honors in lacrosse and field hockey at Connetquot High School, Zullo patrolled the midfield for the 2011 champion Yellow Jackets.

“It was so great to win this at Disney,” Zullo said at a US Lacrosse-sponsored social event for coaches following a weather-delayed round of pool-play games.

The trip down memory lane continued.

“The day before the championship, I was guarding a girl and got whacked in the head on a follow-through. I was bleeding everywhere.”

Rebecca Thorn, an assistant coach for that squad and this year coaching her own Yellow Jackets team in the 13U Division, joined in the laughter.

“The worst part was, they counted the goal,” Zullo said.

Reviewing her squad’s roster from that year, Zullo smiled with fondness as she read down the list, then inhaled suddenly and looked up.

FALL FOCUS
AMERICA EAST
As we inch closer to the 2019 season, the America East crown still runs through Stony Brook. But the Seawolves graduated history-making talent, leaving the field more hopeful than in years past. Teams are listed in order of last year’s final standings.

STONY BROOK
7-0 AMERICA EAST, 20-1 OVERALL
The Seawolves graduated record-breaking scorers Kylie Ohlmiller and Courtney Murphy, not to mention five-year defensive standout Brooke Gubitosi. But Stony Brook has won six straight conference titles, and coach Joe Spallina said top returning scorer Taryn Ohlmiller is expected to be back in full swing by the start of the season after tearing her ACL in May.

JMU GEARS UP FOR TEAM USA, ASSISTANT DORRIEN VAN DYKE

Dorrien Van Dyke was named an assistant at James Madison and announced as a player on the U.S. women’s national team within one week at the end of her summer.

“My life was going in such a good direction,” Van Dyke said. “It was so cool I was getting those opportunities next to each other.”

Van Dyke will see her worlds collide when she plays for Team USA as it takes on defending NCAA champion JMU in the second game of the Team USA Fall Classic at US Lacrosse headquarters Saturday. The U.S. men’s  national team will play Yale at noon followed by Team USA against James Madison.

I'm still furious we didn't win it last season. That national title was ours.

The Empire’s Intact: Despite Graduations, Stony Brook Teeing Up for 2019 Title Chase

A parent from another program told Spallina at West Point, “It’s so personal for your kids...I’ve never seen anything like it.” That goes for how the Seawolves play, connect in the locker room and respond to any doubter who thinks 2019 can’t be their year.

Stony Brook Head Coach Joe Spallina didn’t pull any punches at the team’s first fall meeting.

“We need to win a national championship,” Spallina told them. “That is our goal. That is the only thing we talk about.”

“This isn’t like our seniors had 300 unassisted goals and did all the work,” Spallina said.

Spallina understands, and appreciates, what last year’s senior class did for the program, but he believes in this group.

“The people who are saying we’re going to take a step back are the people who want us to take a step back,” Spallina said. “But the people around our team day-to-day know...only the names will change.”

“I needed to up my workouts 10 times more,” said Kennedy, a second-team IWLCA All-American and the America East Midfielder of the Year. “The thing that got me out of bed each morning and pushed me to do more every day was replaying the last 10 minutes of the BC game. I watched it every day over the summer.”

Below, we present the finalists for Best Women’s Player.

KYLIE OHLMILLER
STONY BROOK/NEW YORK FIGHT
Also a two-time Tewaaraton finalist, Ohlmiller probably had just as strong of a case to win the award in 2018 as she did in 2017, when she set the NCAA single-season scoring record. Now she owns the top two spots, thanks to a senior campaign in which she recorded 88 goals and 69 assists for 157 points. Moreover, she broke NCAA career records for both assists and points, finishing her stellar four-year run with 246 and 498, respectively.  With the rare distinction of being the No. 1 overall pick in two different professional lacrosse drafts, Ohlmiller chose to play for the WPLL’s New York Fight and emerged as a face of the nascent league.

BEST OF LACROSSE 2018 FINALISTS FOR BEST GAME

STONY BROOK-BOSTON COLLEGE
NCAA QUARTERFINAL
This game was billed as an instant classic worthy of being played on championship weekend. It lived up the lofty expectations. And then some. Dempsey Arsenault’s falling goal in front of the crease off a feed from Sam Apuzzo with 1:42 left in overtime sent Boston College to the final four with a 12-11 win over Stony Brook in rainy Chestnut Hill, Mass. The intensely emotional game of 64-plus minutes featured four stick checks, six yellow cards and two green cards. It turned out the Seawolves were without 100-point scorer Taryn Ohlmiller, who tore her ACL a week earlier against Penn State, and that Stony Brook, ranked No. 1 nationally for most of the season, probably had a legitimate gripe about being the No. 5 seed.

Ally Kennedy represents Women’s Lacrosse on U.S. national team

Junior midfielder Ally Kennedy has been selected to the United States Women’s National Lacrosse Team to play in the President’s Cup next month. She will join recent Stony Brook Women’s Lacrosse alumna Kylie Ohlmiller along with 23 of the best women’s lacrosse players in the country.

Kennedy is only one of six players on the national team to still be on a college roster. She will be looking to carry her momentum from last season where she led the team with 47 ground balls, 61 draw wins and 13 caused turnovers. She was also able to achieve 14 multi-goal games.
