Spallina has no problem recruiting. Team lost a game by a goal in double OT. Conf has nothing to do with. BC played a bit better today. Albany mens lax has no problem recruiting either. The common theme there is that both programs have coaches that kids want to play for. The CAA in lax will not make one bit of difference in recruiting.

This is true Chrissy, but you cant tell me for one second that SB didn't  got the raw end of the stick in seeding because of the AE conference. Every article I have read this week said SB was seeded 5th because of this conference. So bottom line. If SB girls Lax played in the CAA conference this year, with a perfect record, there is no doubt they would have gotten a better seed and BC would have played at LaValle stadium, and probably would have won this game..

P.S. Dont be shocked if the girls Lax get an invite into the Big10 after this season.

Recruiting will not be an issue for Joe- he's built these teams on under-recruited Long Island talent. With how good the brand has become, you will be seeing elite level LI talent staying at home. He just seems like an amazing coach to play for.

With regards to the conference situation, yes Stony Brook would have probably been seeded higher as an undefeated CAA team. If they were undefeated in the ACC or Big 10 the same would be the case. What I dislike about these hypotheticals is that there is no guarantee that they would have been undefeated in those conferences. Part of the reason they were undefeated is they played in the AE.

The AE makes geographic sense and budget wise for the university. I'm not holding my breath for a conference move. With continued aggressive OOC games, the seeding will be better. They key will be adding some ACC teams to their schedule IMHO- beating Northwestern/Stanford/USC etc. didn't carry the weight that it needed.

All good points.  What I think is paramount for SBU is to continue to build the local brand, and recruit heavily in the Long Island area - heck, we've got 3 million people who live out here.  Do as Spallina has done, and engage with the local kids.  This goes for all of our athletics programs.  We're the # 1 game in town for college athletics (clearly overtaken Hofstra, IMO) - let's keep our kids home!

Sure, it was disappointing to not get to the Final 4 here, but it is extremely difficult, regardless of seeding and venue, to win it all in these one-and-done tournaments, where everyone taking part in the Tournament is a force.  When the dust settles and disappointment dissipates, the women's LAX team will be able to hold their heads up high and revel in their season accomplishments.  Congrats to them on a great season that legitimately put SBU on the national map!
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

I turned off the screen the second the final goal went in, so I didn't see all the postgame BS. When did we lose Ohlmiller??

And yep, final rounds at our home field and we're not even in it. I'm seriously pissed off. Though I don't think the game being here would have made a difference at that point.

Losing Taryn Ohlmiller (key playmaker, top-10 scorer in the US with over 100-points) for the entire game proved impossible to overcome.

(She went down with a torn ACL v UPenn and did not play at  all v BC.  I don't think the announcers had any idea the effect her absence had on our offense...they didn't seem seem to notice she was missing...doubtlessly BC did.)

"The offense left opportunities on the field, though, and fluidity was hard to come by.
Sophomore Taryn Ohlmiller couldn’t play after tearing her ACL in the previous game against Penn."

Ah, Gotcha. Taryn went out, but we still had Kylie, so that's what confused me. We definitely win with Taryn in the game.

Spallina and co are a great staff and we've got enough coming back that we should be right back in the tourney again next year. This year had a title run on a silver platter though and I wouldn't count on that again.

We should always schedule strong OOC schedules in all sports, but the difference in travel in the AE compared to the CAA or A10 is negligible in the grand scheme of things. We're already outspending several Mountain West programs as is, so I doubt money is the issue. Chicago State is on the brink of collapse, but they still fly their teams all over the country in the WAC to compete. We need to be doing everything we can to get the hell out of this conference. I thought we could improve it and spur our conference mates to invest more into athletics, but that was clearly wishful thinking on my part. Hofstra has blocked us in the past, but if we continue taking care of business in all of our sports, we can at least land ourselves in the CAA if not an FBS conference.

The next star for Stony Brook.  Keep in mind, these are highlights before she entered her junior year in high school.

Chrissy . Tho I agree Ohlmiller got screwed last year, I think this year competition between BC, Apuzzo was a toss up. I am no Lax nut but when you have a player who is #1 in face off and ground balls and scores as many goals as her, its tough to beat that.  But,I am bias and think Ohlmiller should have won it also..

I think playoff performance (and team success) is heavily weighted in the women's award. Not saying it's right, just seem to be the way it is recently. To be brutally honest, Kylie did not have her best game v BC (most likely due to the devastating injury to her sister - and number three team scorer - the previous game). Apuzzo had strong all -around playoff games and had 3 goals and 4 assists in the finals loss. That said, I really wish Kylie had won it.

14. STONY BROOK
2018 record: 20-1 (7-0 America East)

Last seen: Falling to eventual NCAA runner-up Boston College in a double-overtime thriller in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

Senior starts lost: 111 of 252 (44.1 percent)

Senior scoring departing: 361 of 612 (59.0 percent)

Initial forecast: There’s little predicting how difficult it will be for the Seawolves to replace a pair of record book-altering scorers like Kylie Ohlmiller and Courtney Murphy. In addition to those starters, Stony Brook loses key pieces at the draw and on defense, and then there’s the unknown element of how Taryn Ohlmiller will recover from her torn ACL. The heavy lifting will fall on players like Ally Kennedy and Keri McCarthy offensively. As we’ve seen in years past, you can’t count out what coach Joe Spallina and company will produce.

Kylie Ohlmiller Turns the Page, Enters WPLL & Signs With Brine

Endorsement deal, professional career next for the once-unknown kid from Islip

Shortly after 8 p.m. on May 7, Kylie Ohlmiller was sitting on her couch at a house she shared with her Stony Brook teammates when she received a Twitter notification. It was from the New York Fight of the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League. Ohlmiller had been selected first in the draft.

It came as a surprise — and not just because Stony Brook’s Joe Spallina was the only Division I head coach who had Ohlmiller on speed dial when she was trying to get recruited out of Islip High School.

“I hadn’t known the draft was going on that night,” Ohlmiller admitted with a laugh. She and her teammates spent the next 15 minutes watching the draft on Facebook Live, cheering when fellow Seawolf Courtney Murphy was selected 10th by the Fight.

Ohlmiller hopes to make the draft — and New York Fight games — appointment viewing moving forward. The WPLL began its inaugural season this month, and Ohlmiller is expected to make her professional debut when New York plays at Baltimore Saturday.
