In 2018, Stony Brook will host the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship for the third time after Northwestern won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 in front of near-record crowds.

This year, both the Nittany Lions and Seawolves will be aiming for the final four – and a championship berth. Penn State last won the final in 1989, though Stony Brook has yet to reach the highest pedestal.

The playoff hopefuls will meet for the first time this year on Penn State’s home turf, kicking off the Nittany Lions’ fall ball tournament.

Stony Brook is the only team in Division I to return a pair of 100-point scorers, led by Tewaaraton finalist and America East Offensive Player of the Year senior Kylie Ohlmiller with her single season NCAA record 164 points off 78 goals and assists, and flanked by her sophomore sister and ILWomen Honorable Mention All-American and America East Rookie of the Year Taryn, who netted 101 points off 65 goals and 36 assists. Plus, senior Courtney Murphy is back after missing most of 2017 with a torn ACL; she had 100 goals in 2016. Today, we present our four finalists for Best Women’s Player of 2017: Kylie Ohlmiller (Stony Brook), Zoe Stukenberg (Maryland), Kayla Treanor (Team USA) and Devon Wills (Team USA).

KYLIE OHLMILLER
STONY BROOK
After a historic offensive season, junior attacker Kylie Ohlmiller was named the first Tewaaraton finalist in Stony Brook and America East history with 78 goals and 86 assists. Her 164 points broke an NCAA Division I single-season record, previously held by all-time great Jen Adams, who set a mark of 148 in 2001. Ohlmiller was named the IWLCA Division I Attacker of the Year, as well as the America East Championship Most Outstanding Player, leading the Seawolves to their fifth straight conference crown.

ILWomen Fall All-Access: Stony Brook

Quote
Fresh off a 20-2 season that ended with a heartbreaker to eventual national champion Maryland in the NCAA quarterfinals, Stony Brook is determined to reach the top of the mountain.

Sixth-year head coach Joe Spallina described a “bitter” feeling his team felt leaving College Park, Md. after letting a four-goal second half lead disappear in a 13-12 loss to the top-seeded Terrapins. The near miss has added further fire for an already explosive Seawolf offense that was No. 3 in the country last year at 16.09 goals per game led by Tewaaraton finalist Kylie Ohmiller’s NCAA point record of 164. The potent offensive attack will be that much stronger in 2018 with the return of redshirt senior Courtney Murphy after missing most of last season due to injury following a 2016 campaign where she set an NCAA mark for goals with 100.

Stony Brook also brings back most of its starting defense, that was tops in the NCAA last year allowing just 7.27 goals per game led by junior goalie Anna Tesoriero. The biggest question mark will be at midfield with the graduation losses of Dorrien Van Dyke, (third in points) and Kristin Yevoli (second in draw controls) creating opportunities for others to step into the spotlight.

I visited Stony Brook late in its fall campaign. The offensive and defensive players were split up for some of the practice working on individual drills, but the two units are expected to be very much in sync this spring when the Seawolves strive capture the program's first national title Memorial Day weekend on their home field of LaValle Stadium.

Historic attack
The Seawolves’ attack features three career 100 point scorers in Murphy, Kylie Ohmiller and her younger sister Taryn, a trio that Spallina described as “a dream team.”

Murphy was in class during the Stony Brook practice I attended, but the Ohmiller sisters were in midseason form practicing a variety of stick dodges during individual drills. Kylie Ohmiller said the chemistry with her sister improved as the 2017 season progressed and is excited to resurrect her previous connection with Murphy.

“It’s insane to watch her come back and have a whole respect for the game, “ said Ohmiller of Murphy. “She is working her butt off and it is going to be cool to share our final season together and go out with a bang.”

Ohmiller drew faceguards in early every game last season and for 2018 the defensive focus may shift from matchup to matchup to the other two attackers. Practices have focused on preparing for different faceguard scenarios what adjustments each attacker should make.

“I think were going to see more of it,” said Ohmiller. “We’re trying to make sure were all ready for whatever the other throw against us.”

Sister Act
Taryn Ohmiller quickly emerged as Stony Brook’s future offensive star last year with 65 goals and 101 points. She took advantage of attention drawn to her sister and fostered a unique on field chemistry with Kylie that should only get better this spring.

“It’s really cool to have chemistry with a teammate, but when your teammate is your younger sister, you know how exactly how each other work,” said Kylie Ohmiller. “When we assist each other it is probably the coolest feeling in the whole world.”

Taryn Ohmiller said she working hard this fall to make improvements to make improvements to her footwork and dodging ability. At practice during one-on-one drills she was invoking various spin moves near the cage. Her closeness with Kylie was also apparent with plenty of joking around between sets.

“It’s awesome getting to play with my sister,” said Taryn Ohmiller. “It’s something we always dreamed of growing up so to get to play on this high of a level together on a top five team is really amazing.”

Who else will step up?
The gradation of Yevoli and Van Dyke means a bigger focus in the midfield for sophomore Ally Kennedy, who registered 39 goals last year, and senior Samantha Disalvo (33 goals).  Spallina said this spring is also an opportunity for seniors Tiffany Zullo and Emma Schait to fly at a high level after waiting in the wings. Spallina said freshmen that have emerged during the fall that should see important minutes this spring include former Mount Sinai High School teammates Rayna Sabella (midfield) and Haley Dillon (defense) along with Sarah Pulis (midfield).

Draws could be difference maker
Draw controls proved crucial in Stony Brook’s season-ending loss to Maryland with the Terrapins winning 19-of-26 including the final three of the game in their late rally from a 12-10 deficit.

Associate head coach Kim Hiller, who as a college player graduated as Hofstra’s second all-time program leader in draw wins, is working closely this fall with returning draw specialists Keri McCarthy and Kasey Mitchell in hopes of assuring Stony Brook’s lethal offense gets as many possessions as possible. Spallina said Pulis could also be a force in the circle given her height measures more than 6 feet.

“Draws have been a big point of emphasis for us,” said Spallina. “It’s the reason we lost the Maryland game.”

Coaching addition creates homecoming
Spallina added Kara Mupo as an assistant coach this fall after she spent the past two seasons on the William & Mary coaching staff. Mupo reunites with Spallina a decade after she starred as a player for him at Rocky Point High School. She then went onto Northwestern and won a pair of national titles at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium in 2011 and 2012 as one of the Wildcats’ top scorers.

“Besides knowing me and the system and the way we do business, she is a winner and a champion,” Spallina said of Mupo. “She was a no-brainer hire for us.”

Bracing for challenging slate
Stony Brook’s fall schedule has featured competition among the nation’s best including  an Oct. 14 matchup with Boston College where the Seawolves won by an impressive 15-4 unofficial score. The autumn slate, which also featured Penn State, Florida and Cornell, serves as precursor for what Spallina says will be the toughest schedule in program history. Stony Brook opens up with a west coast trip to face USC and Stanford. The non-conference schedule also matches the Seawolves against Northwestern, Penn State, Towson, Cornell, Denver, Michigan, Johns Hopkins and Towson. Spallina said the grueling schedule is designed to boost Stony Brook’s RPI in order to obtain as high a seed as possible for the NCAAs.

Eyeing Memorial Day weekend at LaValle
Spallina has not shied away from reminding his players of the opportunity to play for a national championship on their home field in late May. The last time Stony Brook hosted championship weekend in 2012 was Spallina’s first year at the helm turning around a program that at the time had never reached an NCAA Tournament into one that is looking to be the last team standing.

“It would probably be definitely the coolest feeling in the world to walk out on our home turf and be in that Final Four so is something that is in the back of our heads every day,” said Kylie Ohmiller. “It is something that is going to motivate us and fuel our fire.”

Stony Brook

Any conversation about Stony Brook starts with Kylie Ohlmiller, and as expected, she played like a Tewaaraton finalist. She unofficially had two goals and two assists, with her first goal opening the scoring on a slick dodge near the crease that caused her defender to fall to the turf.

The Seawolves’ X-factor this season will likely be Courtney Murphy. She was on the field just over seven months after tearing her ACL against Northwestern on March 5, and although she showed some rust early by missing high and wide, Florida still face-guarded her.

Murphy scored three times – twice on feeds from Ohlmiller – an important sign of Stony Brook’s concerted effort to get her going.

Coach Joe Spallina said that getting Murphy volume is important at this point in the season.

“For us, it’s just more of a timing thing,” he said. “I think they did a good job of playing her inside. They generally play well against her. In a real game situation, we’d probably move her around and move somebody else in there.”

Spallina said he was happy with being able to get most of his players into the contest. With 10 returning starters, he’s looking to sort out the rest of the roster.

“Our eyes are on the finish line,” he said. “In order to be a good team at the finish line, we know we have to continue to take the necessary steps here and develop the depth. … We got to try different things on the draw; we got to try different defensive people. Today we got to play a lot of kids against a great opponent.”

Freshmen Rayna Sabella, Sarah Pulis, Haley Dillon and Rachel Williams received extended run. Spallina said Marlee Moon Gaddy is someone he hopes to “groom to get into that left-handed attack spot down the road.”

There were the record breakers, including Stony Brook junior Kylie Ohlmiller, whose 164 points broke an NCAA Division I single-season record previously held by Jen Adams, and Team USA attacker Kayla Treanor, who set a new U.S. single-game record with 12 points in the 18-1 pool play win over England, surpassing Lindsey Munday. Both Ohlmiller and Treanor were nominated for Best Women’s Player of 2017.

1. The UWLX College Draft took over Twitter on Wednesday night. The Baltimore Ride, Boston Storm, Long Island Sound and Philadelphia Force selected several collegiate stars that will graduate in 2018.

The Storm drafted Stony Brook attacker Kylie Ohlmiller as the No. 1 overall pick after she set a Division I record in 2017 with 164 points, previously held by all-time great Jen Adams.

Other big names were selected throughout the 16-round draft, including Ohlmiller’s teammate and fellow record holder Courtney Murphy.

Murphy, who returns this spring for the Seawolves after tearing her ACL and setting the single-season NCAA goals record in 2016, was selected at No. 36 by the Sound.

Tracking the @unitedwlax collegiate draft and having 7 @StonyBrookWLAX players drafted is incredible! So proud of these ladies!!2018

Two of college lacrosse’s brightest stars, Ohlmiller and Kent may be suiting up together in the near future. Ohlmiller was selected by the Boston Storm on Wednesday night with the first overall pick in the 2018 UWLX College Draft — followed two picks later by Kent, who also joined the Storm.

Spallina is going to become the Geno Auriemma of women's college lacrosse and it starts with a national championship this fall
