The Empire’s Intact: Despite Graduations, Stony Brook Teeing Up for 2019 Title Chase

A parent from another program told Spallina at West Point, “It’s so personal for your kids...I’ve never seen anything like it.” That goes for how the Seawolves play, connect in the locker room and respond to any doubter who thinks 2019 can’t be their year.

Stony Brook Head Coach Joe Spallina didn’t pull any punches at the team’s first fall meeting.

“We need to win a national championship,” Spallina told them. “That is our goal. That is the only thing we talk about.”

“This isn’t like our seniors had 300 unassisted goals and did all the work,” Spallina said.

Spallina understands, and appreciates, what last year’s senior class did for the program, but he believes in this group.

“The people who are saying we’re going to take a step back are the people who want us to take a step back,” Spallina said. “But the people around our team day-to-day know...only the names will change.”

“I needed to up my workouts 10 times more,” said Kennedy, a second-team IWLCA All-American and the America East Midfielder of the Year. “The thing that got me out of bed each morning and pushed me to do more every day was replaying the last 10 minutes of the BC game. I watched it every day over the summer.”
