The defending national champions, owners of a nine-game winning streak and one of the hottest teams in the country, play Stony Brook, a team that’s scorching in its own right, in the first round of the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournament. With the win, the Seawolves punched its ticket to the NCAA tournament and will go head-to-head with reigning national champion James Madison in the first round of the NCAA tournament this Friday, May 10, at Maryland.“I could not be prouder of this group,” said head coach Joe Spallina. “I think our kids were fired up to show people how dominant we are. I think this game in my time was the finest championship performance we’ve had.”The win over Albany was Stony Brook’s 11th in a row and 11th scoring 15-plus goals.
Each women's lacrosse season, I am reminded of the words that Joe Spallina shared with me at our initial meeting back in 2014: "We've got the America East on lockdown." Truer words were never spoken. That lockdown continued on Saturday when our women's lacrosse team claimed the America East championship for the seventh consecutive season by steamrolling Albany 21-7. It's been an amazing run that doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
