The No. 8 Stony Brook Seawolves (18-1) think they can be the one to make waves. Their lone loss was to Florida, and they count wins over USC, Colorado and Northwestern. Kylie Ohlmiller, a junior with a national-best 145 points (70 goals and 75 assists), is looking to become the school's first Tewaaraton winner. Little girls on Long Island wait as long as 90 minutes to snag her signature after games at LaValle Stadium. "We have all the pieces this season and the mindset to win it all," coach Joe Spallina said.

Stony Brook's Kylie Ohlmiller, who has 145 points on the season, needs three more to tie the Division I single-season record.

Great win, now finally over that hump. Now we're playing with house money against Maryland. Women's lacrosse at Stony Brook is a model to which other programs at the university should look to for inspiration.

Maryland seems unbeatable so playing them to within five would be a minor victory.

Wolfie MD  I agree . If this team can advance and be nationally ranked so can others . No reason to be in the middle of the pack in the America East or CAA.

So gald they've made it this far. I may be able to make it out to the game since it's in my neck of the woods.

Spallina and the talent is why this team is so good. He came in with a certain amount of cache from Adelphi with national titles. He promotes the program and sells the local kids on it. He schedules the big names and expects his kids to win, not to be just competetive. It really doesn't matter what conf you play in, you just have to strive for excellence. His model for success should be the model for all coaches at SB. He uses social media to his benefit and really sells what his program is doing. You don't hear the weather excuse when it comes to this team. They are the example of not needing an indoor practice facility in order to recruit. Big fish in a small pond seems to be working really well for Spallina and his team.

No. 8 Stony Brook 13, Northwestern 9

In a hard-fought battle on Long Island, Stony Brook prevailed over Northwestern, 13-9, to earn its first-ever berth into the NCAA quarterfinals. Tewaaraton finalist Kylie Ohlmiller posted six points (2G, 4A), while kid sister Taryn chipped in three goals and an assist. Danita Stroup posted a hat trick for the ‘Cats in defeat.

By The Numbers: 1
Stony Brook's win over Northwestern mark the first time in program history that the Seawolves are NCAA quarterfinal bound. Stony Brook will take on No. 1 seeded and undefeated Maryland.

X-Factor: Keri McCarthy, Stony Brook, Midfield, So.
Headed into second round action, Shelby Fredericks was averaging 8.42 draws per game – best for third nationally – and was coming off of a 12 draw performance vs. Albany on Friday evening. Sophomore Keri McCarthy held Fredericks to just five from the field, while grabbing a game-high nine of her own. Additionally, she chipped in two points (1G, 1A) of her own.

What’s Next?

“EVERYONE KNOWS WHO MARYLAND IS, WHO HAS GONE TO MARYLAND AND DONE ALL THAT. I’M EXCITED TO BE A PART OF WHAT STONY BROOK HAS TO SHOW THE WORLD.” — STONY BROOK'S KYLIE OHLMILLER, WHO BROKE JEN ADAMS' NCAA SINGLE-SEASON SCORING RECORD

“I couldn’t do anything without coach Joe Spallina pushing me to do my best every day and seeing something in me in high school that no one else saw,” said Ohlmiller, a junior from nearby Islip, N.Y. “Or without the help of my teammates. Without them, I wouldn’t have as many assists or goals.”

In so many ways. It’s the year her younger sister, Taryn, debuted for the Seawolves. The freshman ranks second on the team, and seventh in the country, with 98 points. It’s also the year Stony Brook finally broke through.

1-seed Maryland vs. 8-seed Stony Brook

Stony Brook had two play two games to get here, routing NEC champion Bryant 21-6 then defeating Northwestern 13-9. The America East champion has won 15 consecutive games, scoring in double figures in all but one contest.

What could the game bring?
The traditional power vs. the new kids on the block: Maryland has been in the NCAA quarterfinal round every year since 2007 while Stony Brook makes its first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals.

Two of the top three scoring offenses enter, with Maryland averaging 17.05 goals per game and Stony Brook netting 16.29 goals per game. Stony Brook also has the nation’s top scoring defense with seven goals allowed a game, while Maryland is 13th at 9.05 goals allowed per game.

Matchup to watch: Stony Brook’s Kylie Ohlmiller vs. Maryland’s Nadine Hadnagy
A battle of Tewaaraton finalists: In the red corner, you have a human highlight reel attack that shoots and passes behind her back, shoots while falling, bounces shots, and can run everywhere.  On the other side of the ring, the best shutdown one-on-one close defender in the sport that has handled some of the best in the game. Ohlmiller has notched at least four points in every game this season, and Hadnagy has led a Maryland defense that has not lost yet. Something will have to give.
