Take Me Back: Local Legend Kylie Ohlmiller Interviewed By Hometown Hopeful
https://www.usalaxmagazine.com/usa-insider/senior-women/take-me-back-local-legend-kylie-ohlmiller-interviewed-by-hometown-hopeful

Quote
This month, Caitlin Barnes, a member of the Long Island Yellow Jackets in the class of 2026, interviews U.S. women’s national team gold medalist Kylie Ohlmiller, whose own experiences growing up in Islip, N.Y., helped prepare her for Stony Brook and beyond. Barnes, who is also from Islip and passes Ohlmiller’s jersey every day in the halls of Islip High School, hopes to follow the same path Ohlmiller took to stardom.

CAITLIN: What was it like transitioning to college?

KYLIE: Most of my high school years were spent worrying about where I’d go to college, but it was cool to be able to finally say I’m going to Stony Brook and staying on Long Island. Being at a smaller school, you learn how to make really meaningful relationships. And those people tended to be my teammates.

CAITLIN: What was your favorite team to play against in college?

KYLIE: We had a good back and forth — it wasn’t really a rivalry, but every time we played it was a good game — with Northwestern. It’s very similar styles of lacrosse.

Early 2023 Rankings: Nos. 5-1 (Division I Women)
https://www.usalaxmagazine.com/college/women/early-2023-rankings-nos-5-1-division-i-women

Quote
5. STONY BROOK
2022 record: 16-3 (6-0 America East)

Last seen: The Seawolves shrugged off a postseason ban from now-former conference America East, received an at-large bid and topped Drexel and Rutgers in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. In the quarterfinals, Stony Brook led eventual champion North Carolina by one at halftime but fell 8-5.

Initial forecast: After dominating the America East — the Seawolves last lost a conference game in 2014 — Stony Brook essentially replaces James Madison as the most prominent name in the CAA. But the Seawolves have bigger aspirations than a conference crown after close calls against UNC in back-to-back quarterfinals. The team enters 2023 with its offense largely intact from last season. The top three leading scorers return in Ellie Masera (67 goals, 20 assists, 100 draw controls), Kailyn Hart (64 goals, 14 assists) and Jaden Hampel (21 goals, 21 assists, 22 draw controls). Masera didn’t rest on her laurels this summer — she was part of the silver-medal team in the Sixes discipline at The World Games. Her return will likely negate the graduation of two-way midfielder Siobhan Rafferty (32 goals, 19 caused turnovers, 35 ground balls). Attacker Jolie Creo from Holy Cross, who led the Patriot League and was sixth nationally in points per game (5.47), is joining the fold, too. Charlotte Verhulst, who was second on the team with 63 draws, is also back. The biggest question is in net. Charlie Campbell (7.22 GAA, .494 save percentage), who anchored a Seawolves unit that led the nation in scoring defense (6.63), has graduated. Kameron Halsall started in 2021, played in 11 games in 2022 and is eligible for a fifth year in 2023. Redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jones did not play last year. Whoever is in net will have a lockdown defense playing in front of her. Haley Dillon, who led the team with 50 caused turnovers, is staying on Long Island for a fifth year, and Clare Levy (19 caused turnovers) continues to provide a physical and vocal spark. Midfielder/defender Jaidyn Donley, an Under Armour All-American, will also suit up for her freshman year.

Masera notched 87 points in her sophomore campaign, leading the Seawolves to an impressive 16-3 season. Masera’s impact doesn’t stop on the offensive end alone, as the midfielder notched an impressive 100 draw controls, 23 groundballs and 18 caused turnovers.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team enters the historic 2023 campaign as the fourth-best team in the nation, according to the Nike/USA Lacrosse Division I Women's Preseason Top 20.

Three returning Seawolves were named to the Inside Lacrosse Top 50 Women's Players for 2023 this past November. The 2022 America East Midfielder of the Year and IWLCA First Team All-American Ellie Masera was the highest Seawolf on the list, as the junior was selected sixth overall. Senior Kailyn Hart and junior Clare Levy also joined Masera on the list, with Hart coming in at 32nd and Levy being recognized at 37th overall, respectively.

The fourth-place ranking is the highest preseason ranking Stony Brook has received by any publication since being named the No. 2 seed in the 2018 preseason polls by Inside Lacrosse and IWLCA.

Stony Brook midfielder Ellie Masera was named to the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-America first team. Masera is coming off a season where she became the first underclassman in program history to earn First Team All-America honors and was just one of two underclassmen in the nation to earn the recognition. Her 87 points and 67 goals were both team-bests and she was top 25 in the nation in goals per game (17th) and points per game (25th). The 100 draw controls by the Long Island native marked the fifth time in program history that someone reached the triple-digit figure, joining two instances each from alumnae Keri McCarthy and Ally Kennedy.

Seawolves defender Clare Levy earned second team recognition from the publication. After earning All-America East First Team honors, USA Lacrosse All-America Second Team, and collecting ILWomen All-America Honorable Mention last season, Levy helped Stony Brook hold opponents to a nation-leading 6.69 goals per game. The Long Island native finished the season with career-bests in ground balls (31), points (7), and draw controls (39). In addition, the defender caused 18 turnovers in the 19 games she started in.

Stony Brook attacker Kailyn Hart and midfielder Jaden Hampel were picked as third team honorees. Hart, the 2022 America East Attacker of the Year, ILWomen All-America Honorable Mention, USA Lacrosse All-America Honorable Mention, and First Team All-America East finished the season with a career-best 64 goals. Hart was key in Stony Brook earning an NCAA Tournament at-large selection, as she scored 18 goals over her final five games and recorded 11 consecutive hat tricks starting with four goals against Vermont on March 26. The Long Islander collected 3.56 goals per game which was 19th in the nation and helped Stony Brook lead the America East with 17.3 goals per game.

For the first-time in her career, Hampel has been named a Preseason All-America recipient. The midfielder claimed All-America East second team honors after her standout performance last season. The Long Islander appeared in all 19 games and made five starts. Hampel finished the season with a career-high goals (21), assists (21), points (42), shots on goal (39), ground balls (18) and caused turnovers (8). Her 21 assists were a team best and ranked third in the conference.

PRESEASON MIDFIELDER OF THE YEAR
Ellie Masera, Stony Brook

What doesn’t Ellie Masera do? The junior, who was the youngest player invited to U.S. national team tryouts in 2021, led Stony Brook in goals (67), points (87) and draws (100) last season. She was also second in assists (20) and third in caused turnovers (18). The quintessential tough-as-nails Seawolves middie enters the season with international experience under her belt, having represented the U.S. in Sixes at The World Games. She’ll now lead the Seawolves into a new era as they switch to the CAA after nearly a decade of America East dominance and, more importantly, try to help the team burst down the Final Four door after years of knocking on it.

Just took a look at women’s 2023 schedule.  It’s a little disappointing that all of their games vs. other preseason top 10 opponents are on the road. Would’ve been nice to get one or two of these games at LaValle.

It was the third time in the past eight seasons that they finished on top in this metric, but the first time since 2017. And it’s hard to point to one thing that made the difference. They allowed just .43 shots-per-possession (1st); they turned teams over on 36% of the possessions they faced (2nd) and their keepers saved 48.1% of the shots on goal (3rd). No weaknesses there.

2023 NCAA Lacrosse Rankings: No. 4 Stony Brook (Women)
https://www.usalaxmagazine.com/college/women/2023-ncaa-lacrosse-rankings-no-4-stony-brook-women

Quote

NO. 4 STONY BROOK
2022 Record: 16-3 (6-0 America East)
Final Ranking (2022): No. 5
Coach: Joe Spallina

TOP RETURNERS
Ellie Masera, M, Jr.; Kailyn Hart, A, Sr.; Clare Levy, D, Jr

Joe Spallina calls Ellie Masera the best midfielder in the country. USA Lacrosse Magazine’s prognosticators agreed, tabbing the junior middie and the Seawolves’ leading scorer in 2022 the Preseason Midfielder of the Year. Kailyn Hart adds flare and depth on offense, while Clare Levy does the same on D.

KEY ADDITIONS
Jolie Creo, A, Gr. (Holy Cross); Hailey Duchnowski, G, Gr. (LIU); Shana Hecht, G, Gr. (Temple)

With Charlie Campbell and Kameron Halsall gone, the Seawolves brought in grad transfers Hailey Duchnowski (LIU) and Shana Hecht (Temple) to compete with redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jones for the starting netminder nod. Jolie Creo from Holy Cross will likely take on the offensive quarterback role, freeing up Hart to be more of a wing dodger.

KEY DEPARTURES
Graduations: Charlie Campbell, G; Kameron Halsall, G; Siobhan Rafferty, M; Rayna Sabella, M

STORYLINES TO WATCH
Ellie Masera appears “unguardable” after the fall.

It would be hard for Ellie Masera to top her 2022. The midfielder led Stony Brook in goals (67), points (87) and draws (100), won silver with USA in Sixes and played for the senior national team at Fall Classic. But Spallina put the lacrosse world on notice for 2023 — Masera got better.

“She developed an ability to dodge from X,” Spallina said. “She’s a premiere wing dodger.”

And Spallina has seen her develop the ability to pass off the dodge.

“Last year, she was an elite player, but now she’s raising the level of players around her,” Spallina said.

The players around her will include Charlotte Verhulst (3 G, 3 A, 63 DC), who has transformed from a draw specialist into a true two-way midfielder. Jaden Hampel (21 G, 21 A, 22 DC) is also versatile. Though much of the offense is run out of the midfield, don’t sleep on Hart. The attacker finished second in goals (64) and points (78) in 2022.

Who will start in goal?

Stony Brook’s backer-zone defense ranked first nationally in goals allowed per game last season (6.63). But starting goalie Charlie Campbell (7.22 GAA, .494 SV%) and formidable backup Kameron Halsall (5.54 GAA, .532 SV%) are both gone. Aaliyah Jones redshirted last season and turned heads in Stony Brook’s open scrimmage against Notre Dame this fall for her quickness and athleticism.

A pair of transfers are also in play. Hecht appeared in one game at Temple in 2022. Duchnowski (.505 SV %) originally came to SBU to be a grad assistant coach, but the NEC Defensive Player of the Year from LIU decided to use her last year of eligibility in 2023.

Whoever it is will have a historically stout defense in front of her.

“For us, our defense is so good that we need goalies who need to make the saves they are supposed to make,” Spallina said.

All-Americans Clare Levy (18 CT, 31 GB, 39 DC) and Haley Dillon (50 CT, 35 GB) and all-conference defender Ella Whitehouse (12 CT, 12 GB) headline the list of returners.

Is this “the year?”

The Seawolves have been on the cusp of their first Final Four berth in close-call quarterfinal games in four of the last five seasons.

What makes this year different?

The switch from the America East to the CAA, where Stony Brook will play historically tougher teams like Drexel, Hofstra and Towson, should help the RPI. SBU has been seeded eighth for the last three NCAA Tournaments and played top-seed UNC close in the last two, drawing questions about whether the Seawolves should have been slotted higher.

“The closest quarterfinal has been the one-eight game, which is an alert that we are not placed properly,” Spallina said. “But at the end of the day, we’re not in to just to make the Final Four or quarterfinals. We’re in it to win the national championship.”

And Spallina thinks SBU has the depth to do it this year.

“We've never been aligned like we are now,” he said. “We return our top scorers and the majority of our starting defense. When you look at those things right there, it’s easy to see how we are poised to do what we are supposed to do.”

ENEMY LINES
WHAT RIVALS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SEAWOLVES
“They do an incredible job of player development. They find a lot of players who aren’t the five-star, blue-chip recruits and make them become really incredible players who have a chip on their shoulders. I don’t think you can ever sleep on Stony Brook. Their defense is really tough. They’ve got some big weapons returning.”

BEYOND THE BASICS

14.2%

The Seawolves finished the 2022 campaign with the top-rated defense in the country, as measured by opponent-adjusted defensive efficiency. It was the third time in the past eight seasons that they finished on top in this metric, but the first time since 2017. And it’s hard to point to one thing that made the difference.

They allowed just .43 shots-per-possession (1st); they turned teams over on 36% of the possessions they faced (2nd) and their keepers saved 48.1% of the shots on goal (3rd). No weaknesses there.

I would love to see Spalina and company make it to the Championship game this year. God knows. They all deserve it. They paid their dues, and now it's there for the takings. lets just see where the commity seeds them this year.
