Stony Brook women fall to North Carolina in NCAA lacrosse tourney

The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team challenged North Carolina in ways no other team has been able to this season. But it still wasn’t enough to hand the Tar Heels their first loss of the year.

Top-seeded North Carolina defeated No. 8 Stony Brook, 8-5, in the quarterfinals of the women’s lacrosse NCAA Tournament at North Carolina’s Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill Thursday evening.

North Carolina (20-0) plays No. 4 Northwestern in the semifinals May 27 in Baltimore. Stony Brook finishes 16-3 after falling in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Stony Brook became just the second team this season to enter halftime with a lead over North Carolina, leading 4-3 at the intermission. The Seawolves also held North Carolina far below its scoring average of 17.6 goals per game entering the contest. The Tar Heels scored at least 20 goals in seven contests and posted at least 14 goals in each game.

Ellie Masera struck first for Stony Brook before North Carolina scored the next three goals of the contest. But the Seawolves scored the final three goals of the second quarter, including Siobhan Rafferty’s goal with 27 seconds left in the period to take a 4-3 advantage. Jaden Hampel scored two goals over 1:12 to tie the score at 3 for Stony Brook.

North Carolina scored the final four goals of the game, including Caitlyn Wurzburger’s goal with one second remaining in the third quarter to take a 6-5 lead.

Andie Aldave had three goals and an assist and Sam Geiersbach had two goals and an assist for North Carolina.

Masera and Hampel each had two goals for Stony Brook.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Throughout a season filled with double-digit victories and record-breaking performances, the North Carolina women’s lacrosse team seemed accustomed to only one familiarity — dominance.

But on Thursday night, playing on its home field in an NCAA quarterfinal bout against Stony Brook, the same team that led UNC by two goals late on the same stage a year ago, the Tar Heels were a little over one quafter away from all the accolades being for naught as the team trailed by a goal.

Great season.  This was the only competitive quarterfinal matchup. This program is so close.

he's right of course.  the FPSs are just so unfair.

we did shoot into moreno's stick a lot but still, the ladies played really, really great.  picking off lanes in particular.  levy is fast in the open field.  hampel shows up in the big games- check the stats.

He should be. We were seeded incorrectly. The 1 v. 8 was the only competitive quarterfinal game and the selection committee ought to be ashamed of itself. It goes out of its way to protect blue blood programs as though there is some built in heirarchy in womens college lacrosse that shall not be disrupted.

I didn’t get to watch the game but Carolina was awarded 9 free position shots and we were awarded 1!?? And outs was at the end of the game.  I guess the refs threw us a bone once the game was out of reach?  Anyone who watches the womens game knows that the officiating is so inconsistent across the board.

I don't claim to be an expert but almost every time a whistle blew it was in UNC's favor, and it's not like the game was a mismatch. SB was every bit as good, and when the teams are relatively even, you would think the calls would even out over the course of a game.

I hope next year we can crack the QF curse. We did well. By far the best QF game out of the 4 played.

I wonder if joining the CAA will make a difference in respect. The CAA is better - but not that much better either. Maybe we start getting the 5th seed we have deserved as opposed to the 8th seed.

Nonetheless - we should be really proud of this team, of this amazing program Spallina has built. I don't want the guy to ever leave!!!

Congrats on a great year, but I think I need to stop watching these big games, as I may be a jinx.  When I turned it on last night, we were ahead 5-4.  4 unanswered.

Although a great effort against the #1, we looked a little tired in the 4th.  I know Spallina is a first class coach in women's lacrosse, but a couple of F-bombs got through on ESPNU, and I thought his thumbs down moment, wasn't the classiest, whether it was justified or not.  I guess just a lot of frustration at that juncture, not getting over the Final 8 hump again.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

There was definitely favoritism for UNC, for sure, But UNC players are bigger and stronger and a lot were faster.

I watched the entire game. Joe was getting frustrated because of all the fouls being called on SB and virtually none on USC. He was correct for speaking up. I also think he was still fired up because of the 8th seed and behind Florida. Even the commentators said multiple times SB got screwed by the committee.

UNC is the deepest team in the country in terms of overall talent. But, I disagree that any of these teams are just bigger and faster. SB produces All-Americans every year and we have a lot of speed.  We wouldn’t be a consistent top 10 program if we didn’t have the athletes Spallina recruits. The overall depth/talent at literally every position on the field is what sets UNC apart.

if we won- or even if it was close- the excuses would be coming.  first it will be that they ran a zone.  then it will be that they cheated.  or there were fifth year covid seniors.
or redshirts.  then it will be that unc's best player was hurt.  then it's SB was too physical.  and got too many free position shots.  or the goalie was just on fire.  or unc hit the pipe.  or unc had a goal taken away.  but it cant be what it is in reality.

of course, most of that is untrue.  they just played their hearts out and theyre a great team.

Absolutely agree, but watching that game, I just notices that all of UNC players were huge, athletic, and quick. SB girls of course are consistently a top 5 team in the country
