SBU Football / Re: New coach thread
« on: November 13, 2023, 07:53:30 pm »
I think the Holy Cross head Coach would be a good candidate.  He was in the running for the Delaware job so he would want to coach in the CAA.  After Holy Cross finished in the top 6 last year he could be ready to go and has realized that he reached his apex there last year.

Other interesting long shot candidates would be a few coaches from the PSAC who have had success.  Kutztown HC Jim Clements and Lutz from Slippery Rock.  Another name which would have been out there if this was a year or two down the road is former SB player Dan Mulrooney.  He is in a rebuild at Lock Haven and had their best season since the early 80s.  Went from 1 win to 5 in his second year there.

What about Ambrose the OC at Albany?  He basically saved Gattuso's job up there in Albany.  I can't wait to hear the rumor mill for the candidates.  I just don't know how the AD survives this and is given the opportunity to pick a new HC given his track record.  I guess we can always hope for a miracle that he is shown the door next.

This job should get alot of interest.
Not sure the Holy Cross head coach leaves for anything less than a FBS head coach position at this point but copying Holy Cross is potentially a good idea. They found a winning up-and-comer head coach at the D-II level with a proven record of successful recuiting and took a chance. And it worked. Big time.

Fordham dipped a bit this year, perhaps their HC is ready to move.  Patriot or Ivy certainly carries juice with our admin.

Another obvious move is to lure the OC or DC from a Delaware/Villanova type of program.

I don't think SBU is doomed to be horrendous in football forever. The facilities are good, the diploma is worth something, and the CAA is a pretty solid FCS conference. I am sure there is a talented up-and-comer FCS assistant coach who sees that and is willing to take a career risk with SBU. The kind of guy recruits like. Maybe eventually go 8-4-ish for a couple of years. And then moves on.

But none of that can even begin without Priore's departure.

Tough to watch.

I heard the half time show was one for the ages!! Very fitting for SBU these days. And that fire up the crowd music was very exciting!! WOKE on steroids

What did they do at halftime?

I didn’t see it. But I was told it was 20 minutes of WOKENESS. Gay pride flags were flying around everywhere. Can somebody in here verify this???
I was there and that is pretty much it. The fans seemed to ignore the spectacle.

On a positive note the crowd was large and the weather was absolutely terrific for a night game.

And the CAA preseason poll looks to be spot on regarding SBU. Long season upcoming.

I want to see what the new OC does with the SBU offense before I pass judgement

Agreed. The few times I saw Maine I was impressed with their offensive scheme.
I am concerned that the last two times we faced Maine - with Maine’s offense led by our current offensive coordinator- we won. And we didn’t win very many games the last two years. So, the addition of Maine’s offensive coordinator plus the addition of a VERY inexperienced SUNY Buffalo backup QB does not inspire confidence.

(Certainly, we won’t really  know how effective our offense is until we see how effective our offense is. But I would be more optimistic if either one of those two (or Priore) was coming off a remotely successful season.)

or, maybe it fits right into the gameplan!  ::)
Priore  wanted to name a starter who has no college game experience because we're  a running team?  Very clever - chess not checkers!

The elevator is slow, but it always was slow. Even when new. Never understood why.

And if those coaches want to get an extra workout in climbing the stairs, more power to 'em. I'm lugging equipment so I'll be patient. Especially because I know the elevator is slow.

As for the stadium's condition, I never noticed significant deterioration, just a little wear and tear from 20 years of use. I've seen much worse in college facilities.

And the new scoreboard does put some kind of fresh face on it. But if forced to choose, I'd rather have a winning team.

The starting QB has been through spring and summer practices so has indeed thrown passes at SB, just not in a game yet.

Whatever you think of Casey Case, picking someone before the season starts versus several weeks in like last year is probably a better strategy.

Agree. Just the fact we can say we have a Starting QB in July feels good.

Sometime we just have to appreciate the little things and not take them for granted.
I don’t know. If the QB had ever thrown a college pass I would feel good. It’s such a roll of the dice when you name a starter without game experience.  Especially if he was lightly recruited out of high school. But, and I guess this is small comfort, Priore thinks he did better in camp than the other guys.

Case was a 3-star recruit out of high school, but the fact that he was so far buried down the Buffalo depth chart and didn't even see any garbage time at QB isn't the most encouraging. There's a lot of FBS transfers on this team.

Casey Case was VERY lightly recruited coming out of high school:

Casey Case came to Buffalo from Winter Park High School in Florida. He had an amazing senior season that saw him throw 2,265 yards and 22 touchdowns.
But he was an under-the-radar recruit, garnering a few offers from some FCS schools and Lance Leipold in Buffalo.

One of the concerns I have regarding the 6-6 Case is that he does appear a bit slow-footed on his high school tapes. He may have picked up quickness in his three years of practicing and working out at Buffalo but, if not, there may be MANY breakdowns on offense (given our multitude of issues) and a slow-footed QB will be immediately exposed...even given our run-heavy offense.

Coach P just announced his starting QB for the 2023 season it’s Casey Case
He was very lightly recruited out of high school, spent 3 years buried on the University of Buffalo’s depth chart, he’s 6-6, and has thrown zero (0) college game passes. Should we be optimistic?

/\  /\  /\  Well, you nailed it. Although dead last or second to dead last was kind of an easy call:

CAA announces its preseason poll

1. William & Mary (13 first-place votes)
2. New Hampshire (1)
3. Richmond
4. Delaware (1)
5. Elon
6. Rhode Island
7. Villanova
8. Monmouth
9. Towson
10. NC A&T
11. UAlbany
12. Campbell
13. Maine
14. Stony Brook
15. Hampton

Don’t see us dropping football even with the awful results the last five years (and particularly awful last year) AND the utter lack of student body interest in the program.

The ordinary college move is to switch out the coach for an engaging up-and-comer who can focus on recruiting (we’re lacking in talent and the ridiculous QB situation is merely Exhibit A).

Not sure if anyone on this board follows Patriot League football. SBU needs to copy the Holy Cross example.

IMHO we were not a 2-9 team that had a couple of unlucky bounces and could have been .500, we were one of those 2-9 teams that could have easily been 0-11.

44
Hoping to see from good play from the young QB because something tells me we’re kinda thin at that position and recruiting good QBs is not a strength at SBU.

45
Any chance we’ve been taken  in by some ‘happy talk’ and haven’t recruited very well for the last four years?  The frosh QB himself was VERY lightly recruited by other schools.

Fordham (!) seemed to have better players on BOTH sides of the ball.
