I haven't watched a single one of our basketball games this year and I don't think I'll start now.

Two bodybag games a year only allows for one other FCS OOC game. I'm not totally against playing two FBS schools, but perhaps only playing one P5 school a year would be better. It's not like the programs we've been playing recently are bad. Utah St. had their QB go in the first round last year and those triple option academies are always tough.

If they're two somewhat winnable FBS games then I wouldn't be opposed to that. If we lose to Oregon by less than 4 touchdowns I'd call that a huge win personally.

Long story short, SBU can't afford to fire Geno, not with three years left on the deal (outlined in the Stadium article below). For reference, Boals contract info is underneath.

Well, there you go!!! Why in the world would Stony Brook lock in a 5-year contract to an assistant coach who doesn't have a proven winning track record.  I could see 2 or 3-year contract max, out of the gate then reevaluate after year 2. But 5???? This program deserves what it gets.

We make the most baffling contract decisions and it's the reason why our programs languish in mediocrity for years and years despite paying good money to our coaches. BS.

Conference and Athletics / Re: Conference Realignment Rumors
« on: February 05, 2021, 05:43:16 pm »
That’s not what they want. They want to be FBS. Which... with those teams? C’mon.

It does seem a bit far fetched at first, however if it does have legs and is something they're really working on, SBU would be stupid not to at the very least inquire about it and see what's going on. I'm also now hearing rumors (that could be and likely is total BS) that Old Dominion and Charlotte from CUSA are considering taking their football independent and putting everything else into the A10. ODU didn't play football at all last fall even though the rest of CUSA did. If that ever did happen it kinda kills our A10 dream, but suddenly gives us A LOT of FBS independent schools in the eastern US right in the CAA footprint.

Things could very well wind up somewhat like football where some conferences participate in the NCAAT and some don't. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they shrunk the field or did something this year.

Around Stony Brook U... / Re: Academic Rankings & Accomplishments

havent seen much.  then again she's in a new role and has to deal with a pandemic first.

this is rather... sanitized: https://www.sbstatesman.com/2020/04/16/stony-brook-ad-shawn-heilbron-holds-virtual-town-hall/

Quote
Newly-appointed president, Maurie McInnis, looks to be a key figure in raising Stony Brook’s athletic prominence, according to Heilbron. “With the new president, how do we position ourselves for great things in the future? Just being content is not the way we operate here. That’s the way our athletes are too. I’m excited with all our supporters to figure out what it looks like and how we take that next step. We’re going to get there.”

on the other side- this hints at a $2m cut which we all knew: https://tbrnewsmedia.com/tag/maurie-mcinnis/

All talk from Heilbron again. If we don't get into the A10, or don't go FBS, it's all bulls***. Getting things past Cuomo (no term limits in NY? VA is one and done by comparison) and navigating the Covid situation as far as budgets are concerned is certainly going to be a huge challenge, but that's why we put these people in the positions that we do. Get it done. Going FBS I admit would need some help and some luck from other likeminded schools, but upgrading SBU into the A10 isn't out of reach at all. The exposure is much greater while travel isn't much worse.

With virus cases rising and more transmissible strains like the UK and South African strain out there, safe to say most teams are unlikely to finish the season. I'd forget any hopes of Spring football either.

383
JMU is also in an area that has a lot of talent that they can recruit from.

The 2021 New York HS Football Class lost over 40 of their Top Players to other states (especially to the NJ Catholic Schools) and once a player leaves the state they get more exposure that leads to more opportunities so schools like SBU are at a disadvantage when it comes to home grown talent. As an example the top 8th grade QB in the Country is from Cold Spring Harbor and he will attend IMG Academy as a 9th grader and with the success of the Freeport players other LI kids are thinking of doing the same.

Do you think if SB has the opportunity to go FBS would some of these players stay home and play for SB??

They would consider it if we were FBS, but I think what would actually get them to come here and stay is if we went FBS, AND fixed all of the anti-social cultural issues this campus has. That's the biggest hurdle to recruiting I think. Sure as an FBS school we'd get considerably better talent, but consider that those kids could also consider attending Buffalo or an AAC school where they'd likely have a better social experience. Go FBS, improve the culture, and get us into a decent conference? Now you've got something brewing on LI.

384
The whole team imploded and left even before the new transfer rule was proposed. You have to think that falls on Geno.

385
With the currently rumored schools the travel would be tough, however if you can convince Umass, and Uconn to join so they have a football home, and JMU finally moves up to FBS into this conference with Liberty already being there it doesn't look so far fetched for SBU anymore. Add in Delaware and you have a very logical divisional alignment.

ASUN North:
Umass
Uconn
Stony Brook
Delaware
JMU
Liberty

ASUN South:
Central Arkansas
Kennesaw State
North Alabama
Jacksonville State
Eastern Kentucky
North Carolina A&T

Bit of a hodgepodge of schools institutionally, but it gets us into FBS and could lead to an even more favorable geographically aligned conference down the road. Plenty of quality football in both divisions too. Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, and NC A&T have had very good teams in recent years and we know what JMU and Liberty have done recently. If EKU and NC A&T stay FCS, then you can have a nice 10 team conference by putting Liberty in the south division. If SH has "big time" aspirations for SBU he needs to either get us into the A10, or help spearhead something like this for football.

Big news this week as far as FCS conference realignment. The more pressing one is the WAC grabbing four Texas schools from the Southland and starting up an FCS league of their own. That will lead to another FCS auto-bid to the playoff with one less at-large spot up for grabs, but the bigger news that will impact SBU is linked below. The Central Arkansas AD says that the ASUN is going to start sponsoring an FCS football league with the intention of moving the whole conference up to FBS. This was rumored a few years ago when the ASUN said they were going to expand and then split-off into separate conferences. Link below (relevant piece at 39:30):

If SH doesn't have us and SBU in on this, he has failed us as an Athletic Director and our new president isn't as pro sports as we were led to believe having come from Texas. We NEED to get into this. I don't give a damn about the "what about attendance we don't have the money" crap. We NEED to move NOW!! Liberty, Coastal Carolina, and upstate rival Buffalo all just finished the season ranked in the FBS. It's time to ditch this small time barely scrape five wins FCS BULLSHIT and move up. If SH doesn't get SBU in on this, he's all talk. Let's do it guys.

387
Chuck has lost it. Time to move on. At the very least we ought to be able to hire an up and coming coordinator from another successful team here to LI to right the ship. This is ridiculous.

Also, watch attendance jump once people realize we won't be playing the boring brand of Priore football anymore.

SBU Football / Re: 2020 SBU Football

The only way to prevent this is to be a desitination in and of yourself. That means getting into conferences where this can't happen anymore. In football that means FBS and ideally the AAC or a new conference, and in Basketball and other sports that means the A10. You usually don't see players moving from the A10 to  a Big East or P5 school, but you see players all the time leaving us here in the AE for ACC, B1G, Big East, etc. programs.

That’s the budget they need to operate that’s one of the reasons JMU hasn’t made the jump exactly what that entails but I know for sure it’s $5M

That and they feel as though they're "too good" for the FBS conference which has been floated as a possibility. They don't want to go Sun Belt or C-USA. Personally, Sun Belt is underrated and a fun conference to watch. JMU won't get a better offer, no matter how good they play. Success there could be parlayed into a move up in conference, but that would take time and more money.

The Sun Belt offered them in early 2014 and they turned it down. The Sun Belt at the time was far and away the worst G5 conference. JMU wanted to be in CUSA with ODU. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but now the Sun Belt is soaring coming off a year where it had two teams in the top 20 and CUSA is struggling. There won't be any expansion of the G5 unless moves by the P5 force it to occur. If you read their fan forum, JMU fans are mad as hell they didn't take the FBS invite when they had the chance and are pissed at their administration for lack of leadership. You don't build that big ass stadium they've got to stay FCS.

I didn't even expect us to have a basketball season at all tbh, so to get what we've gotten so far is good. I say the team should just keep on keeping on and handle this. Hopefully the season doesn't have to be cancelled from here forward.
