SBU Men's Basketball / Looking ahead to 2020-21
« on: March 29, 2020, 02:54:57 pm »
The more the hot stove heats up, the more I think that we're going to have a few new faces in 2020-21 – Ceesay gone, Latimer gone, Garcia a flight risk as a grad transfer, Olaniyi (Ceesay's buddy) declaring for the draft, maybe an underachiever opts/is asked to transfer.

I don't know anything about Garcia's personal or academic situation, but my suspicion that he goes elsewhere is growing. You see all these immediately eligible people making huge jumps in level of play. Two guys from Quinnipiac just committed to Boston College and Texas A&M. Jordan Bruner from Yale, who we saw this year, will go someplace big. And maybe Garcia doesn't make the impact that Yeboah did this winter, but I believe he could be a solid reserve or sixth man on a high-major, a little more on the next tier down. I know not every redshirt senior transfers; it just seems that way.

I missed this last month but it's a nice bit by the B1G Network.

Vermont's already taken advantage of some transfers going in the other direction, adding Justin Mazzulla from GW and more recently Tomas Murphy from Northeastern. And of course they'll play immediately and likely make an impact.

Feels like we're skidding, but I'm hoping we get some good news soon.

Pikiell lands his best recruit ever - big man Cliff Omoruyi from just down the street. Ranked 36th nationally per Rivals. What a turnaround over there.

Latimer is a big loss IMO. He had his moments over these past two years. Especially in the 18-19 season.

I expect he winds up on a team in the VA/DC area. GMU would have him right at home and I'd imagine they could use his help.

Latimer was a high academic kid coming out of high school. He was also recruited by UMBC, which would be an interesting move – they do graduate Jackson, Lamar and Council.

I liked latimer and think he got screwed by Ford. Apparently, there was some bad blood between those two. I think his production numbers dropped off because of lack of playing time and not being a starter. Thats a shame..

27 minutes isn't nothing – fourth highest on the team – but it is down from his freshman season. He just wasn't as essential on offense for us.

I think we're really going to miss him defensively.

It's worth noting that Latimer is no longer on the roster online.

After a couple years of barely losing anyone to graduation, we're looking at losing Olaniyi, Foreman, Garcia (if he stays), Gueye, Otchere, Ochefu and McKenzie a year from now.

Per Corey Evans with Rivals, we and a number of schools are in touch with Randy Miller, a grad transfer from NC Central. He averaged 14 a game this year before going down with a season-ending injury.

Elsewhere in the AE, Mark Carbone (Joe's brother) is out at UNH. He's immediately eligible.

The transfer stuff is crazy. UMass evidently cut PG Sean East loose. He wasn't infallible, but a lot of us were really high on him. No ties here whatsoever in HS, but he would be an awesome fit, yet will probably land someplace higher.

Interesting offer out just recently to juco PG Mardrez McBride. 14 and 5 assists a game at USC Salkehatchie. He hit 53% of his threes. Same basic lefthanded stroke that Policelli has. It looks like he plays a little defense too. With him and a kid who's committed to St. John's this fall, the team went 27-4 and scored 96 points a game.

This video went up 3/17, we offered him 3/18 per VC, and Latimer's out three days later. Doubt there's a correlation but may be striking while the iron's hot.

Big, big hit in my opinion. While he wasn't the first, second, third option on offense, he hit some enormous shots for us. But more importantly, I thought he was our best on-ball defender by a lot – harassing the ball handler, fighting through screens, etc. He was terrific this season. And we had two more seasons of that. My sense is that Policelli can easily fill his spot as a shooter, but we will miss Latimer's D.

Lamb and Duncan can go **** themselves, as far as I'm concerned, they played an entire season sans 2+ games.

I agree with giving spring sports athletes that extra year, but for them? Nah.
100%. No way they give winter athletes another year.

I wonder if SBU gives them a banner.

No fans for tomorrow night's game. Ought to be eerie.

The CBI has been canceled. We'll see if the CIT follows suit.

I fully realize that this is not earth-shattering news.

OT: Didin't know where to put this - Sam Sessoms (Binghamton) just put his name out on the Transfer Portal.

Around the AE/country thread would do. That's a dagger for BU. No conference tournament and then this? I wonder what's up over there.

Looking past the postseason to 2020-21 ... does Christie return? Does Garcia? Does Foreman? My guess, with no inside knowledge at all, is no, no, yes. Never know with Chef and Mac either. There's pretty much no path to additional playing time.

Hear are my thoughts:

- Christie will transfer or be cut;

- I hope you are wrong about Garcia.  He's not a Yeboah, but could probably play in the A10 with some decent minutes (maybe 10-20 a night, not 30+ he's getting here).  He was recruited by Pikiell, so there is always the chance that he gets poached by Rutgers, but I can't see him getting the more than 10 minutes per game there.  In any event, let the Garcia watch begin;

- Where is Foreman going to be given the keys to the kingdom, like he has at Stony Brook.  Not sure he can transfer again as a Grad student (prob can), but I fully expect he'll be back;

- Chef and Mac will be Seniors; they will both be back, and would need to sit a year on a transfer;

- Jeff can't be happy with his declining minutes, but as a Senior, he'd have to sit out a year on a transfer.  He'll be back IMO;

- I think TPP is possible flight risk.  IMO, he has terrible body language with the Coach, and if everyone is back, his minutes will be squeezed.  I could see him looking to transfer;

If they stay D-I. Almonacy led SNHU in minutes and Long was at almost 30 a night himself. Think they're looking back?

Watch KK Hilaire on Friday. That's the kind of player we need on this team. Just not enough creativity and distribution at this point on the men's side.

It's worth noting that UVM has a transfer from Oklahoma State and GW coming next season. The latter started 45 games over two seasons. So I'm going to go ahead and assume we're NOT the favorite in anything until we seize the position from Vermont.
