Now … how many Charleston guys end up with Louisville?

With Brzovic and now Burnham gone from Charleston, I wonder if they've been told that Kelsey's taking another job (i.e. Louisville). They've won 58 games the last two years, it's an exciting brand of basketball, and he's a great front man for a program. I could see it. Or they're just like everybody else seeing what kind of $$ they can get or how high on the food chain they can climb. I'd say maybe a little better but not much.

Remaining All-CAA members:
Trazarien White, UNCW (1st)
Anthony Dell'Orso, Campbell (2nd)
Reyne Smith, Charleston (2nd)
Landon Glasper, UNC A&T (3rd)

Apparently, Kelsey is in competition with Pitino's Kid (New Mexico) and Holloway (Seton Hall) for the Louisville job.  Also, rumors that Kelsey is being courted by FAU.  His stock has gone way up.

Kelsey infamously spurned the Minutemen years ago, citing "personal reasons." He just signed an extension at Charleston for pretty good money ($1.1M) but if he's to leave a great situation there for Louisville, for three times the salary in a major conference and down the river from where he grew up, I have to think would be attractive to him. The bar is low right now too.

Edit: Pitino’s staying at UNM so maybe Kelsey?

More on Gueye: He's playing real minutes for the Raptors now. Granted, with guys missing, the Raptors are trotting out a fringe NBA team at the moment, but nevertheless, Gueye subbed in in the first and second quarters in Toronto's loss to Brooklyn last night. Good for him though.

He trails Warney 17-9 on the all-time NBA points list for former SBU players. Captivating chase!

Brzovic gone now too. Sad state of affairs in college basketball. But I can't really blame anybody who's looking for a new, possibly better opportunity.

Guys who I find interesting are these D-IIs who look the part of a D-I. For example, the kid James Patterson from STAC, which wins a million games every year. He averaged 24 and 9 as a sophomore this year, and I have to think he'll garner All-America accolades as D-II's fourth ranked scorer nationally. He looks like a good athlete who can finish through contact, get on the glass and handle it OK. Same thing with this kid Deng Deang at Post. He had 31 and 10 against Patterson a week ago; Patterson had 31 and 12. I'm interested to see where they'll end up.

We have had guys go down to D-II but not up from there that I can think of (although Almonacy did both – guy had almost 1300 career pts so pretty good). Some CAA teams, especially Charleston, have dipped into the D-II and even D-III ranks for talent. There's something to say for guys who have 70 or 80 or 100 games with serious production under their belts. Patterson will certainly land at a D-I; it's just a question of how high. Might even be higher than here. I have no idea on academics, interest, attitude, etc., but he appears to be a guy who could help here.

The portal is so crazy. AJ Storr leaves St. John's, lands at Wisconsin, leads them in scoring, probably back in the portal. Aaron Estrada, Oregon, then St. Peter's, stars at Hofstra, now is a major contributor in helping Alabama reach the Sweet 16. Timberlake stars at Towson, barely plays for Kansas, then gets thrust into a central role with injuries. Nelson makes the tournament with TCU and contributes. It has got to be exhausting for coaches. Anybody could get a call on any day from anywhere. You heard Bill Self say after the tournament loss (or win, I forget) that he's been thinking about next year for the last month. Bonkers.

Edit: With the Muttilib news, the emphasis on scoring is clear. Do you tweet #ImaSeawolf if you're not in fact going to become a Seawolf?

Conference tournament and tournament success undoubtedly brings some kind of prestige to the program, but I never really gave much thought to the financial bump from that success, particularly the First Four. Per Pete Thamel, Wagner and Grambling State made $341,802 for their respective leagues by winning their First Four game, and that's over a six-year span, so $2M roughly to each league. I'm not sure how that's distributed, but I have to think the team itself gets a larger piece of the pie.

The CAA hasn't earned a tournament win since JMU in 2013 when they were a 16 seed and beat LIU in the play-in game. Entering the tournament, they were 20-14 in a year when the CAA was ranked 18th among all conferences. This year, I feel like we would've gotten a 15 had we made it, but maybe the First Four? And a few bucks with a win?

I tell you … with all of the screening and cutting and driving and kicking and overall ball movement that we see in these tournament games (most, not all), it feels like night and day with what we have witnessed recently. I know, we were one make away (sigh), but the difference in flow and shot quality is stark.

With the O'Connor signing and two open spots, we really need size. I thought Traore was going to be excessed by Pitino last year, along with Pinzon (now at Bryant), but he earned another year. As Braziller pointed out, both here and Fordham would be good landing spots if he's looking to be a contributor.

What I like about O'Connor is that he was a major contributor and leader at a serious level of basketball. How that translates, we'll see. But getting guys from good programs is a great start. I'm wondering how the point guard situation shakes out with him, TO and Space. And are we comfortable with that? O'Connor seems like a real Aaron Craft type; I like that he gets after it defensively.

I still think we need a real offensive guy, unless we're convinced that Woodard slides right in. I like him; I'm just generally skeptical of juco transfers. Even if it's seamless, I still think we need another, and ideally somebody who isn't afraid to dig in defensively on the perimeter too.

Geez. There goes Jyare Davis. Trey Moss from W&M too.

It's crazy that this is just about the kind of activity we can expect every offseason until further notice. There are still some people using the extra year they picked up from COVID.

Seth Towns is in his eighth year of college basketball and will be playing tonight for Howard in their tournament game against Wagner. He made his collegiate debut on November 11, 2016:o

Dstone Dubar from Hofstra has entered the portal as a grad transfer. Assume he will get big time high major interest. 6'6" and shot 40% from 3.

Let's see how many all-conference players are still in the league in November. Of the 2022-23 awardees, seven played in the CAA this year, five transferred up, and three graduated. Of this year's group, five are done (Rice, Thomas, TSM, Phillips, Thompson), Williams and Dubar are already in the portal, and three may consider that route too once Alabama's through with them this week. We'll see if Charleston's still with us next year anyway.

No CBI for us, so it's officially the offseason.

Just one CAA team still playing.

Stony Brook marches on. We'll play at *James Madison in the WBIT on Thursday.

Some consolation. Still a tough day. But let's make the most of the opportunity.

Edit: Strange. On the WBIT selection show, it said we were at #1 seed Miami. But nope.

Edit: Now the SB link doesn’t work anymore. Maybe we are playing Miami. (Shrug)

Opponents who made the tournament: Charleston, Duquesne, Nebraska, Yale, Wagner and Michigan State. St. John's missed out, but it's still gotta be a record for us. I'd guess easily.

I just think the regular season should matter and the teams that perform better should have the advantage by playing the tournament on their home floor. Even if that would have meant that the men would have lost in the quarters. Both of these tournaments are watered down because subpar teams got hot, keeping deserving teams out.

Guessing we get a WNIT bid, but we’ll see if Langford’s on the sideline for it.
