SBU Men's Basketball / Re: Stony Brook @ Vermont - Patrick Gym NOON ESPN3

I mean, Warney can only do so much. He was a man amongst boys today. The supporting cast needs to step up. Puriefoy has been just absolutely horrible the last few games- he's just chucking up brick after brick. Traveling after making that steal was a backbreaker.

Oh well, still can't beat Vermont at Patrick. Some things never change. Not feeling as optimistic about the rest of this season as I was before. We need to get a higher seed than Vermont at the least for the conference tourney- we just cannot beat them there.

First AE win over a ranked team in like 8 years. Give these guys a break, we had such a tough nonconference slate and with this young team some growing pains were expected. To win this game is so sweet.

Warney was contained for most of the game but made an amazing shot to take the lead at the end. That's just him maturing- remember earlier in the season when he'd get doubled/tripled, he'd force shots. He had 6 assists today which was critical.

So proud of the guys. I'm gonna miss the UNH game but can't wait to see these boys back at home.

Kam Mitchell really showed why he was such a highly touted shooter out of high school.

What does Shawn mean when he tweeted this on December 10th?

Today we took our first steps forward into the future of LaValle Stadium. We have work to do but every journey begins with that first leap.

I have lots of confidence in our AD- having chatted with him on several occasions, he's got great ambition and practical vision. I wonder whats gonna happen with LaValle.

I was at the game- the 1-3-1 zone really confounded the team. I don't think I've seen that many dumb turnovers in a while. Athletically we were definitely better than Princeton but they run their scheme to perfection.

I like Mitchell off the bench but I think Thrower needs to be on the floor the majority of the time with Puriefoy instead of Mitchell. Kam threw away some passes in the half court game. We had this game under control but just collapsed late in the game. Kam is a fine player but he should be offense off of the bench.

The Ivy League took it to the America East yesterday and was undefeated (Penn, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton). As an aside, Princeton's arena is really beautiful. I can imagine that it gets rowdy during Ivy League play. I wish I had applied there back in the day- I doubt I would have gotten in but it seems like an awesome place.

Overall, we just need to clean this up by the time conference play starts. If we can't beat Princeton I think we're gonna get throttled by Providence and probably UW. I do think games like this will help the team "grow-up" faster. American will be a good challenge too at home.

Big win tonight, really crisp game overall. Jameel Warney just gets better and better. He was just outmuscling their 7 footers and grabbing boards over them like its nobody's business. WKU is a very good team- they barely lost to Belmont on the road, a squad that won 26 last year. WKU is a perennial tournament team.

My takeaways:
1. Roland Nyama can ball- now that he's got the early jitters out of the way, I really like his game. He's got unbelievable energy and plays very good defense. His offensive game is a work in progress but he's filling a big role for this team. He's got good size and made some big blocks and had some big boards. That steal and dunk was just amazing.

2. Tyrell Sturdivant is gonna be a good one- sure, he's gotta bulk up big time but that's what college is for. He rebounds well and is definitely showing some promise in the post. He's really been a pleasant surprise for us.

3. Puriefoy is a special player- his first step is so quick and he can get to the hoop at will. As Puriefoy goes, so goes Stony Brook.

4. WKU pressed for >10 minutes in the second half- we have to work on beating the press for sure down the road.

Overall, this is arguably the best OOC home win we've had since I've been following SBU. Very pleased with the team.

Fun game to watch today. Warney was a man among boys, some of his blocks were just mean. I still like Mitchell off the bench as an outside shooter- he'll fill a nice role for us. McGrew is really maturing into a nice player- if he starts hitting that mid-range jumper he's gonna be hard to defend. Nice to see the depth of our team though.

LOVE our freshman class

Sekunda- as good a shooter as we've had, he's got a beautiful stroke.
Thrower- very good ballhandler, physical to the hoop and a good shot
Sturdivant- needs to put on muscle (who doesn't?) but he's a good athlete, proud of his double-double today
Petrus- moves pretty well for a big guy, you don't usually recruit bigs who can move like he can in the America East

Don't forget we'll have Lucas Woodhouse next year who will be the first true PG we've had in a while.

Fantastic game to watch live. Don't care what you say, I paid 22 bucks and I got more out of the game than I would watching any Knicks game. I didn't expect a win but this game was definitely winnable. There was a sizable Stony Brook contingent at the game. Due to the women's game, they couldn't officially do a fan bus but a LOT of people made the trip.

Hofstra is a really talented squad- they have size up and down their lineup. Puriefoy didn't have a great game. Warney was a beast. However, we had way too many turnovers today to win. Also, the refs made a number of questionable calls.

I was at the WBB season opener. Not the same turnout as the guys but still, not that bad. They apparently have doubled last year's season ticket sales for the ladies. I have no idea how good St. Peter's is, but Stony Brook played well. I think the team is in good hands with Coach McCombs

Brrrrrrrrr, it was chilly at the game. However, fun game all around to watch.

Some thoughts:

1. Bedell has legit homerun speed- once he hit the corner he was gone. 195 yards reminds me of the good ole Big South days!
2. The O-line has come a long way this year- we'll be young but the line showed a lot more discipline as the year progressed
3. How about Donavin Washington? His late season explosion has been impressive. Not bad to have a sophomore as our #1 option next year
4. It'll be tough to replace Will Tye. Look out for Josh Valentin, who's an athletic freak, to fill in those big shoes
5. I'm liking our secondary going forward. Lots of young talent in the defensive backfield.

Overall a couple of different bounces and the Albany game would be possibly deciding playoff positioning. We definitely held our own in the CAA this season. Teams will respect the Seawolves for sure.

SBU Men's Basketball / Re: Game 1: SBU vs. Columbia 11/14

That was one of the best games I've attended...professional or collegiate. Just amazing energy in the arena. The student section was jam-packed on BOTH ends of the floor. I saw a ton of students standing and watching this one. I'm in the VIP section and I gotta say, its a first class experience. The food and drink selection was amazing.

Also IFCU is a LOUD arena. If we get anything resembling this kind of attendance, its gonna be a nightmare to play it. Any recruit that comes to our big games is gonna be impressed. In the world of mid-majors, this arena is gonna be huge for us. I liked Pritchard but this is an arena more fitting for our team. It will not be an easy place to play for anyone. I cannot emphasize how good of an experience this was.

Now, the game was fun but we gotta work on the free throw shooting. Columbia had some very good size in the post and Warney had to work hard for points. Our perimeter defense got better late in the game.

I'm really impressed with Bryan Sekunda- he's got good size and he's got a great 3 point shot. His 3 late in the second half was clutch- how many freshman hit that shot?! Deshaun Thrower looks the part too- he's got a quick burst and also has a nice jumper. I wanted to see Tyrell today but alas, we have some throwaway games against USMMA and St. Thomas Aquinas coming up where everybody will get to play. This team has got some young but very interesting pieces.

I can't wait- will be soaking it in from the VIP section. I'm looking forward to see what the buffet will be like :)

Really excited to see the arena and seeing it packed. It's gonna be amazing- I'm gonna criticize the students again if that student section ain't packed!

Student turnout was pathetic. The administration needs to do something to improve that- I don't know if the RAs need to be aggressive with it but there were like 70 students total in the student section. Yes I know there are a lot of commuters but there have to be more kids still on campus. To be fair, even big schools have trouble filling student sections but those are schools that charge students for tickets. What excuse do Stony Brook students have? Pretty pathetic.

On the other hand, the community involvement with the team is awesome. Its backwards but the community attendance is amazing.

Much more impressed with this team- we'll be good next year but we gotta figure out who we're going with at QB. Bednarski missed some easy throws and his WR didn't help on a few plays. That fumble by Coker, the mishap on that punt, and that busted play that led to the Tribe TD really disappointed me.

Ultimately, the most important question this year is figuring out who's gonna be our QB next year. Bednarski had an OK game but I'm interested to see what AJ has to offer. Yeah he doesn't have perfect size but he's got the arm to make it happen.

I wonder if this transfer was helped by our AD, who ya'll remember was at Oregon State (and UCLA) before coming here. I'm sure he has some connections with the ducks. If his arrival means establishment of a pipeline out west, that would be a pleasant (and unexpected) benefit.
