SBU Men's Basketball / Re: Game 6: SBU v. Princeton
« on: December 06, 2015, 08:44:59 pm »
McGrew played a very strong game, which is even more impressive under the circumstances.

Warney was a monster.  He was exhausted by the end of the game, and for very good reason.  He did EVERYTHING.  The most impressive thing he did wasn't even physical.  Puriefoy got called for a touch foul (in fairness, it was a legit foul), and he started to let the frustration get to him.  Warney stepped in and got him out of there before he got t'd and tossed.  That's leadership that doesn't show in the box score, but is really important

This was a great win.  Especially because Princeton plays a very similar game to Vermont.   This is a great sign for the conference season.

The bench is not as bad as Hammer says, but that definitely doesn't mean he's completely wrong either.

Petras has a role.  Take up space in the middle and bang with goons to give Warney a breather.  We shouldn't expect more than "buying Warney time".  This is fine for me.  As he's our 4th big guy, anything more than 8 minutes/game shouldn't be necessary.

Sturdivant has had moments of really good play.  But he's also made some plays that made me shake my head.  Inconsistency happens, especially at this level.  I'm hoping he can start to have more good than bad.  I think he's improved, and I think he's going to be very good for us.

Nyama, Thrower, Mitchell, etc.  all of these guys have flaws.  If they didn't, they wouldn't be in the America East.  If the coaches put them in the correct spots, then they could be very effective.  Nyama is more of a swing-man/shooting guard type.  Asking him to run the point is just going to end in failure.  Thrower is a dribble-drive guy.  Relying on him to drain three's is equally problematic.  The list goes on.  If we use the tools correctly, we should be fine.  If we insist on jamming the round peg into the square hole, we'll be in the CBI...

The game against Farmingdale was painful.  I don't think we can read anything into it.  It's tough to be energetic for a game like that.  Unfortunately, this same type of game (heavily favored, nobody really cares, etc) is the games we play against Maine, Lowell, etc. in the middle of January.  We can't be flat against them.

The numbers were inflated yesterday because of the free tickets given out to all hoops season-ticket holders.

I can't honestly imagine there were more than ~5k yesterday.  Student section was virtually empty, too, which is a shame.

Only 18 of our punts have ended inside the 20, so most of the time we're just punting high and short, and sacrificing yardage to prevent a return.  If our net is in the bottom third of FCS, and we aren't giving up any return yardage, then that is a problem that needs to be addressed.  If it's due to punter injury, then we need to rest the kid.  If it's due to "coaching strategy", then that's a whole other problem.

I'm not saying the players aren't busting their asses.  They are definitely doing everything they can, and they have played through a lot of turmoil.  But if the players aren't put in spots to succeed, then there is nothing more they can do.

Ignoring stats entirely, the last two seasons have basically been:

2015: injuries, penalties, bad QB rotation, poor offense, no explosive plays, limited kicking game, VERY GOOD defense, 4 or 5 wins
2014: injuries, penalties, bad QB rotation, poor offense, no explosive plays, limited kicking game, VERY GOOD defense, 5 wins

Two full seasons of the exact same results and the same excuses (looking back at these boards from this time last year, we had the same conversation about the same problems last season).

If this is our new baseline (5 wins, rough-up URI and a few non-conference guys, hope we steal a conference win or two every year), then awesome, Priore's our guy.  If we want more than this, he either needs to fix those problems, or find a way to get our defense into '84 Bears territory.

Facts are facts.  We aren't a .500 team right now.  We haven't been since 2012.

My question is "Are we moving forward, or moving backward?".  Have we seen anything this year that breeds optimism?  We "recruit talent", but then there is always an excuse as to why we aren't winning.   Excuses are  pretty much the one thing we have an abundance of.

If we improve, then i'm happy.  If we continue to repeat the same mistakes, and regress further down the ladder, then no matter how much the players like the coach, he has to go.

SBU Football / Re: SBU 2015 Season Stats
« on: November 15, 2015, 03:46:15 pm »
Stats I have a problem with...

FG's 50% 4-8 (long of 38, misses from 24/27/37/44)
This just isn't good enough for this level.  This means that we need to get the ball inside the redzone just for a 50/50 shot at a FG.  Outside the 20, and it's just not an option.

Longest plays from scrimmage...
70yd Daniels catch
57yd Bedell run
45yd Liotine run
41yd Bolden catch

In 9 games we've had 2 plays over 50 yards.  4 plays over 40 yards.  No explosiveness at all.  Either that is because of risk-averse playcalling, or being unable to make something happen.  Either way, this is not good enough.

RB's have only caught 3 passes all season
That's one catch every 3 games.  Teams know the RB isn't a pass-catching threat at all, so they don't need to protect against screens, wheel-routes, etc.  Anything that makes it easier for the defense is not good.

Net Punt average of 33yds   98 out of 123 in FCS

Averaging 8 penalties a game   99 out of 123 in FCS

Third down conversion rate of 31%   100 out of 123 in FCS

Total Offense, yards per game, 298ypg   104 out of 123 in FCS

So we have an offense that is near the bottom of the FCS in gaining yards and sustaining drives. We make it worse by losing yards via penalty.  And when we are forced to punt, we don't do it effectively.  Since we can't flip field position because we don't have any ability to create explosive plays, this just puts constant strain on the defense, which eventually gives up scores.

And these are the same things that plagued us last year (and the year before).

If this is going to be our "style of play", then we should have stayed in the Big South.

Joe Lunardi has us as a 14 seed, against Gonzaga.

HYPOTHETICALLY, if we went undefeated this year, considering our schedule, I don't think we'd be higher than an 11 seed.  As a low mid-major, that is the best we can hope for.  Once you make the dance consistently, and you make some noise, you can start to bring in the money and bring in the better competition.  But right now, we're not in a position to move up the totem pole.

I loved everything I saw last night.  We moved at a much higher pace, we had a lot more "movement with purpose" instead of just stalling, and we attacked the basket instead of settling for contested jumpers.  Obviously yesterday needs to be taken in context, and Vandy will give us a much better yardstick, but so far so good.

Mitchell just looked rusty.  This makes sense, kid had surgery in the offseason and is still getting back up to speed.

Tim Donohoe is our new Ben Resner.

I think we finish 24-5 and win the regular season title.  As for winning the AE tourney... until it happens it didn't happen.

SBU Football / Re: SBU & Howard Game
« on: November 08, 2015, 06:43:10 pm »
The "punter has no leg" comment is probably because the punter had 3 punts of under 30 yards yesterday, and a long of 35.  Howard wasn't able to return any of them, but that is more an indictment of the punts than showing their effectiveness.  Those stats are just not good enough to cut it at this level.

Unfortunately, warmups don't count for anything.  Kickers operate under pressure.  The mental component is MASSIVE.  Doing it in warmups means absolutely nothing.

I know i'm coming across harsh, but that is mainly because I'm certain Nolan is injured and it seriously impacting his ability.  They should be shutting him down.  We have 4 other kickers/punters on the roster, lets give them some run, and let the kid come back healthy next season (or possibly even in the last game).  The only thing he's learning right now is that he's hurting the team.  And that is definitely not fair to him.

Ugly game.  At the end of the first quarter, we were losing 3-0, despite Howard having -11 yds of offense.  That's something I don't think i've ever seen before.

During an early punt return, we had only 9 guys on the field.  Somebody noticed, but they only ran ONE dude ran onto the field.

Stadium was definitely empty. We maybe had 25 students there.

I had the parents of the Howard freshman RB sitting behind me.  They expected a total blowout, at one point they asked the people around them if this is how they play in the CAA (not as jerks, it was a sincere question, they were honestly shocked it was close).

12 sacks, held the opponent to 109 yards, we had 212 yards rushing, and yet still barely squeaked out a win.

This season is over.  URI and Albany are going to be rough to watch.

In my opinion, the players are the least to blame for the failures of the team.

Just a thought, have we run a screen pass all season?  Wheel route?  Any type of flair route from the backfield?  As of yesterday, the only RB who caught a pass was Fredericks (1 catch...)  How about easing pressure that way?

Another thing we didn't see was any type of designed deep-shot.  And by that, I mean a basic 9-route where Carbone takes a seven step drop then chucks it as deep as possible in the center of the field.  We had a few sideline routes, but nothing more than 15-20 yds out.

Since we have no real "big play" threat, no running game (on the season, we average 3.0 yds per carry), no passing game (50% completion, 158 yds per game). and no real offensive game plan, why not try some of these concepts that every other team uses?

Unfortunately, I don't think Priore is the man to take us to the next level.  He did a very good job getting us to where we are.  But it is becoming painfully obvious that he is not cut out for this level of competition.

If he is a quality recruiter, then he has players who are talented enough to play at this level.  If you have CAA-level players, but can't win in the CAA, then you need a better coach.  If he's a quality coach who is capable of coaching at this level, then he should be winning games.  If he can't win games because the players he has aren't CAA-caliber, then that is on him as a recruiter, and also his fault. Since leaving the Big South, we've gone 5-6, 5-7, and are well on our way to 2-9, so something is wrong.  In my opinion, he's failing at both aspects right now.

As a recruiter, he's relying WAY too heavily on transfers.  This creates a lack of leadership on the team.  Our two captains, prior to this season, played a total of 28 games for SBU in their career.  How can you expect them to lead a team when they've barely been on the team themselves?  Plus, good luck developing chemistry.  If you can recruit kids (or if you transfer them in, you do it early, not one-year rentals), actually play them.  The kids he has brought in, since they never see the field (always getting replaced by transfers), look awful as they haven't played a snap since high-school. That's a recipe for failure (see our current situation at WR, RB, TE).

As a coach, he's been failing horribly.  Can't seem to adjust to teams that can stop the run, doesn't have a "plan B", can't seem to run a 2-minute offense or find a big-play threat, tons of penalties, poor special teams, etc.  And these problems have been getting worse over the past three years.

I'd love to be wrong, but we just got hammered by Elon (who has only won 8 games in the past four years...), and it doesn't look like we're going to win again this season.

I'm pretty sure that today was the worst game of SBU football I have ever seen in my 15 years of watching.

We botched the end of the first half by wasting a ton of time before calling a timeout after stopping them on third down.  Either because Chuck didn't realize the clock was running, or he didn't want to run a 2 minute drill.  As a result, 30 seconds  ran off the clock before he called a timeout (so we lost the time AND the timeout, which was pretty much the dumbest option available).

We botched the end of the 4Q.  Down 14, 5 minutes to go, and we still kept trying to establish the run.  The only passes we threw were within 7 yds of the line of scrimmage.

Chuck was on the sidelines, and for most of the game there were no players within 10 yards of him.  During timeouts, the coordinators spoke with the players, while he did virtually no communicating.  That is a REALLY bad sign that the team and the coach are basically done with each other.

The play-calling came from the sidelines (coordinators, not Chuck), with the coaches making sight-adjustments on each play.  The problem was that Elon didn't disguise ANYTHING (in fairness, they didn't need to).  I don't know what adjustments or reads they were making, since each play Elon ran a basic 4-3 defense with DB's all within 10 yds of the LOS.  We'd go to the line, the coaches would then check to one of three running plays (none of which were designed to stretch outside the TE), we'd get stopped, and the process would repeat.

There were a ton of dropped passes, and there was zero running game.  I don't know if ANY quarterback would be able to succeed in those circumstances.  He also made things worse by missing some reads and missing some throws.  Two of the interceptions were on the WR's (one was a drop that turned into a pick, one the WR just gave up on his route and gifted it to the DB).  One was a great catch by a DB, and one was entirely on Carbone.  Overall it was a poor game all around.

The star of the game for me?  One of SBU's athletic trainers.  Beverette banged up his ankle, and she got it taped up really nicely, and pretty quickly.

I'm intrigued to see what happens with attendance the next two games.  It was pretty bad today, and I wouldn't be shocked if it gets worse.  There couldn't have been more than 25 students at the game, and the rest of the stands were pretty empty.

Realistically, we could end up 2-9 on the season.  Maybe we can get Jim Gush to come back to SBU?  He's at Baylor now...

So I had that moment today when I realized that this is getting to be a tradition of failure.  I checked our boards and found this:

Yeah, over a year has gone by, and absolutely nothing has changed.
