There really is a lot of talent of this team especially with the addition of guys like Tundo, Brady, and Andreassi. I agree with Joewillie that the beginning of the season might be a little rocky, but this could be a pretty good team if/when everyone gets on the same page.

Another article on Ahmad Reid. http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/high-school/post/_/id/12945/berkshires-reid-could-be-steal-for-stony-brook

I can't understand how he was so under recruited. He is athletic enough to high jump 6' 6" (for perspective I think he would finished third at the America East Track and FieldChampionships last spring) and skilled enough to score 26 pts a game last season. And I don't think the competition is as bad as advertised - he had 30 pts in a win over a Hotchkis team that was sending three players to high major schools.

Another commitment, this time from 6' 8" DE Connor Davis from Fallston Maryland. I think he's bit of a project but there's obviously a lot potential with that frame.

The team looked great tonight. They had one of their best offensive nights of the season against arguably the best defensive team in the conference. Stony Brook is going to be tough to stop during conference play.

SBU Men's Basketball / Re: Mayo and King
« on: January 02, 2012, 03:48:09 pm »
It looks pretty obvious that both are redshirting, which is really good for your future.  Mayo and Warney replace Joyner and Rapier, King replaces Carter.  You really don't have a shot blocker on this year's team, so Mayo adds that.  You also don't have a big who can shoot from the perimeter, so King gives you that....Mayo for 3 years is huge, in my opinion.  Also, I've seen Warney 3 times in person, and he's already better than any of your bigs from a standpoint of rebounding/low post scoring/shot blocking.

Is Mayo redshirting because he wants to spend the year working on his game or is he injured?

I'm really intrigued by King. I think Pikiell said he has the highest vertical on the team and might be the best three point shooter as well. I was happy having him when I thought was just a long body with good range on his jumper. I'm sure his game needs some work or else we never would have been able to talk to him, but still I'm excited to see what he can do next year.

It's funny I really like our frontcourt this year with Brenton, Rapier, and Joyner, but next years with Brenton, Warney, Mayo, King, McAlister (he's going to figure it out at some point) looks very promising despite some new faces.

what is going on with Mayo? Is he injured and taking a redshirt year? As long as the injury(?) isn't too serious, I could see this being a good thing for Mayo. He has a lot of potential, but obviously needed to add bulk to his frame to capitalize on his talent. I'd be real happy to have three more years with a more mature Mayo.

Also have there been any reports on how King looks in practice? I have raised my expectations for King ever since hearing he has the highest vertical on the team. According to his espn recruit profile he is nearly automatic from three when in rhythm. He's obviously got a lot of upside.

Happy New Year and yes this is an important  game  to open conference play.  If we play like we did  against Rider we win handily.

Definitely an important game to set the tone for the conference play. I agree with you, I think we can win this game in somewhat convincing fashion. I like our matchups across the board, and we have been real tough at home so far (excluding the second half against Cornell). If we can score in the paint, we'll win.

Any chance we can get a statesman article about Ahmad find out what other schools he considered? I wouldn't be surprised if he was receiving interest from some impressive schools.

I believe this completes your 2012 recruiting class.  I doubt that you have had a better class:

Quick, have you seen or do you know anything about Reid? I like him based on the limited info I've found.

Our three commits played games this weekend. Burnett had 20 pts in an 87-55 win. Puriefoy had 24 pts, 5 assists, and 3 steals in his season opener. Warney had 20 pts and 10 boards against a very good St. Benedicts teams which prompted this tweet from a Scout.com recruiting analyst http://twitter.com/#!/BSnowScout/status/148558600829272065

20 offensive rebounds against a Big East team is impressive. I've said it over on the AE board, but this front court is going to dominate the AE.

Since this is a board about SB sports, I'll make this comment re. the Simons donation— Hopefully the coaches can use the donation as a selling point for some recruitees who are on the fence between SBU and some other major program. I'm thinking especially about the early signing period for football in February. I mean, what high school kid wouldn't be impressed by a school that gets a gift like that?

P.S. I think SBU is "big" enough. As an example, the the University of Virginia has 21,000 students. SBU has about 25,000. We need to invest in improving the assets we already have.

Yeah, to be able bring up the donation while talking about what the school has to offer, especially for recruiting in Florida, Texas, and Cali where the kids very likely have never heard of Stony Brook, could be impressive. Long term I think it will indirectly have a big impact on athletics. I really think this donation along with the tuition increases will set Stony Brook up to be a top 50 type institution, and athletics will naturally follow once the academic reputation becomes that strong.

Regarding size, I don't know for sure but I think a lot of the enrollment increases are probably graduate students. If you're going to build new labs, you'll need to bring in graduate students to work in them.

BIG TIME hire by Liberty. He did a great job at Buffalo, and probably didn't get a fair shake at kansas. To get a former big 12 head coach is impressive.

Incredible news. I'm really looking forward to see Stony Brook shoot up the rankings in some of specific disciplines (I think our physics department is going to quickly become one of the premier departments in the country thanks to the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics) and as a university as a whole. I don't think Stanley is exaggerating by calling it a "rebirth". He is in a position to hire new faculty and make Stony Brook better for the first time since he has been president.

Yeah it's really pretty insane how successful they are down there. Just to note how good they are: Albany was undefeated heading into the quarterfinals where they lost to eventual national champs Northwestern in a rout 4 - 18. Florida beat Northwestern during the regular season.

I think Hillier transferring to Stony Brook is almost like a starter on UConn womens basketball team playing for our womens hoops team.
