Presidents of Stony Brook and Morehouse sit on the Yale Corp. Could either be Yale’s next president?

Yale Corporation members Maurie McInnis GRD ’90 GRD ’96 and David Thomas ’78 GRD ’86 currently serve as the presidents of Stony Brook University and Morehouse College, respectively, and will have a voice in who becomes Yale’s next president. McInnis and Thomas’ backgrounds in university leadership could make them possible fits for the job.

Although the Search Committee has not released formal requirements for the job, the News compiled a list of eight potential candidates in September by examining the shared qualifications of former Yale presidents. The News found that the University’s presidents have often received advanced degrees and amassed a prominent record of scholarly research and publications before also serving as deans, as provosts or in other higher education leadership positions at institutions including Yale.

Both McInnis and Thomas fit those criteria.

“If the corporation elected one of their own members as president that would be legitimate and legal,” said Henry “Sam” Chauncey Jr. ’57, former University Secretary and special assistant to former President Kingman Brewster from 1963 to 1972. “It has happened in other colleges and universities, it’s not impossible or unusual.”

McInnis and Thomas did not respond to the News’ request for comment on the same topic — or about whether they would accept an offer, if extended, to become Yale’s 24th president.

Yale’s presidential search committee, composed of eight trustees and four faculty members, does not include McInnis and Thomas.

At Stony Brook, McInnis heralded in a $500 million gift from the Simons Foundation — the “largest unrestricted gift in the history of higher education,” McInnis wrote in an email to the News. Aside from her duties as a successor trustee to the Yale Corporation, McInnis also currently serves as the inaugural board chair of the New York Climate Exchange.

McInnis wrote to the News on April 5 that she finds it “personally fulfilling” to lead Stony Brook, “where excellence and equity are deeply ingrained in its culture.”

“It is a great honor, and it has been exciting to lead the institution to new heights,” McInnis wrote of her current role as Stony Brook president to the News on April 5. “We have set clear and ambitious goals grounded in expanding our impact through our research and scholarship, our engagement in some of the most challenging issues of the day and our extraordinary success in moving students up the economic ladder. And it has been an exciting year at Stony Brook. ”

18-11 at second place drexel.

that's 8 wins in a row, atop the coastal at 6-0.  hof next.  last year we won 18-6.

arguably got some help today.  four coastal spots up for grabs.  towson/del sitting atop of 5-0.  next is fairfield at 3-2.

then, fourth is monmouth at 2-3 with a win over SB.  fifth is SB at 2-3, so is drexel, but SB won that tilt.  last is hof and hampton.

thus, beating fairfield next week is now huge.  it'd bring us both to 3-3, with a tiebreaker win.  note that hampton has lost all five CAA games by a total score of 100-17.  if you can assume (and you cannot) that fairfield (and hof) will beat them, that already puts the stags at 4-2.  so perhaps third place is somewhat wrapped up.

by the same assumption- if we lose to hof, both at 3-4 with the head to head, and hof beats us out.  the only question is whether that's good enough for fourth.

end of game, 16-12 UD.  while we made it a game- this was ugly ugly ugly, we got worked and were down 10g early.

a few bonehead penalties today.  in any event- just like last year- delaware with a lot of dirty hits.  were just not a top 20 this year and UD is, again.

the good is that we fought back, albeit too late, and maybe the kids are believing.  this isnt the first time this year this occurred.  faceoffs got better, offense, some transition, etc.  our shooting wasnt great today, in the 4th we created a lot of opportunities, but shots were wide, blocked, saved (21 saves!), and even a few pipes.

if we are even lucky enough to win out, have other games turn out the right way, get into the CAA, and win a game, you might even see UD again.

on that front- fairfield beats monmouth (arguably good, especially if we can beat fairfield), hof losing to drexel (probably good).  i heard that UD's move to to the A10 makes them ineligible to host, but im not sure it matters.  towson can certainly contend.

at first place (RV) delaware.  defense doing ok despite the score, taking away angles and forced two clock violations already.  faceoff woes continue.

offense a little out of rhythm.  extremely early slides to pallo.

end of Q1, 5-1 hens.
