So the Islanders have completed their practice facility in Nassau County but close to Belmont Park.  Here is some photos from their Architecture firm.  http://www.andrusarchitecture.com/ny-islanders.html

It looks like one of the rinks has several thousand seats.  Can’t find on the internet what the capacity is.  But since it’s rare for a DI school like LIU-Brooklyn at add women’s ice hockey without a men’s team, this could be the next step for the combined DI campuses.  Atlantic Hockey is at eleven and needs one more and a NY metro team would be perfect for them.

Any faults in my logic?  Presume the Post campus is close.

Interesting how the Pro teams silently or openly support D1 college hockey. That's good for the sport and the school .  Hopefully a team sees  SBU as a startup sort of .  Our team is club is always ranked  .
Would have thought that the Islanders wanted SBU as an NCAA partner as SBU is more reputable, but LIU starting women’s hockey is a major indication that LIU had much more interest.  The combo Brooklyn and Post made hockey at an LIU much more financially feasible.  LIU-Post put out a hiring post for a women’s hockey coach, but months later Brooklyn put out the same notice and the NEWHA was formed.  That seemed to me a sign that those athletic departments were working together with orders from above.

NHL teams need more kids being excited about hockey and the NCAA teams are a good way to do it, as tickets are so much cheaper.  California and Arizona kids are flocking to hockey.  Ariz St started a team and they have plans now to build a 5000 seat arena on campus.   Would not be surprised if Stanford, UCLA, UTah, UNLV, Oregon and Washington started it too.  The recruiting base out west has grown tremendously.  It’s not just Canada and Mass and Michigan and Minny any more.

NHL teams want local NCAA teams.  The Blackhawks support Illini hockey, the Sabres owner built the Penn St rink let’s Canisius use the Sabres practice rink with 2000 seats and may support a Buffalo NCAA team, the Red Wings want Oakland U to start a Detroit area NCAA team, and the Penguins are rumored to be behind an effort to get Pitt a team.  No idea if the Islanders secretly are pushing for an NCAA team, but the Nassau County Coliseum will need teams in the future.  LIU could well fit the bill.

Always pictured Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Stony Brook, and maybe established powers like  W Mich, Miami, Bowling Green and startup Oakland, Mi, forming a conference.   Pitt could well be in the picture too.  But that is probably too many startups at once.

Don’t live in the metro and have been exposed to much college hockey.  Just want to see it grow.  Vastly prefer the Islanders.

An arena of 5000 seats is needed to make a hockey program profitable - see Penn St where hockey is now much greater than BB.

But understand SBU because FBS is the step they need to pour resources in.

The AHA where am projecting LIU to go for hockey has many off campus rinks :  Sacred Heart, American International, Canisius, RIT, Mercyhurst and maybe others.

The NCAA does not require on campus hockey arenas.  Hockey East does so UCONN will build a small on campus arena but still play most of its games in Hartford whole Hocker East waides oFF that rule..  Defending champion Mn-Duluth doesn't have an on-campus arena.

All of Post’s programs retained don’t have to go through a transition process as the NCAA would consider LIU -Brooklyn and LIU-Post to be a DI LIU as of next fall as Brooklyn is already established at DI.  FBS Georgia Southern just merged with DII Armstrong State and no restrictions applied to the sports brought over.  If Post moved up separely retaining its identity, a transition would be required.  Even programs that were only Post programs won’t need a transition so a big savings and revelation for the Post campus.  Would expect LIU to do poorly at first because where don’t have recruited DI athletes.   But the NE conference (which just accepted DII Merrimack too) is way lower than the CAA or American East on the totem pole so they may do well.  Men’s lacrosse, FCS football and men’s hockey would be the sports to be concerned about, at least for attendance.  Men’s Hockey may not get going until after the Islanders move to Belmont Park Arena, when the Nassau Coliseum needs a tenant again.  Women’s ice hockey will be probably play at the renovated facility (former prison?) in the Bronx, but they already have a new league (NEWHA).  Atlantic Hockey needs another team to make 12 as they have 11 now and LIU would be a nice add.

With LIU recently adding women’s hockey to their Brooklyn campus, expect that the Post campus will add men’s hockey and maybe play in the Nassau County Coliseum.  That would create a wintertime sports focus for Post and the Brooklyn campus will still have basketball.

Not many schools add women’s hockey without having men’s, as only Syracuse and Lindenwood have WIH without men’s.  But both will probably add mens when a conference spot opens up.

For a long time, thought SBU was a natural for hockey, but LIU has already made moves toward it.  The New York metro needs more college hockey as its limited right now to Princeton and Army.  Long Island proper sends a lot of hockey players to the NCAA without a home team.

The athletic consolidation eliminates a number of excess programs, like M&W Basketball, softball at Post and baseball, soccer and W lax at Brooklyn so that creates a funding source to tackle men’s hockey.  Adding women’s hockey and W water polo at Brooklyn seems to be a Title IX exercise that was preplanned for adding hockey and going FCS with fb at Post.  Both campuses will have a number of sports so neither of them will feel left out.  It will be better for the Post campus as they won’t have to go through a transition and won’t have to field 14 teams.

Personally feel as if Buffalo dropped a number of sports and will later add M&W hockey when the coast is clear.  Stony Brook wants to move to FBS so that is the priority for spending,
