I never thought this was a winnable game.

But I was surprised by how well we played. We didn't look overwhelmed. We looked physical. We looked like a team that will be much better than our preseason rankings (which I get because they're based off data from last year's injured squad).

I think the big thing is that we're led by a bunch of grad students: TSM, Noll, Clarke, Sabry, Keenan and Maidoh. They're grown men. They're experienced. Adults. And they won't look like the moment is too big for them. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised.

I also feel like if we get beat, it's because the other team is better (like tonight) or because something odd happened (like weird shooting).

I just don't know if this is a sustainable model. I know that's college hoops and the transfer portal, but is that how you build a program?

I think if we or anyone were to upset St. John's (or just keep it close), it's gonna happen at the very start of the season.

Once this team hits the Big East with a dozen games or so under their belt, it's gonna be a beast.

As always, Checkmate, this is incredible. Thank you.

I think there's something to be learned from the Knicks. Did you know that they were third in Offensive Efficiency last year? All I did last year was watch them miss threes and twos - and I'm right! They were in the bottom third in shooting in both categories. And they barely moved the ball.

So how did they do it?

1. They shot a ton of threes. Top five in the NBA in attempts.
2. They crashed the boards. Top five in the NBA in offensive rebounding.
3. The converted on second chance points. Top five there too.
4. They limited turnovers. Top five.

So they basically limited their turnovers by taking the first open look from three, then crashing the boards and making their opponents pay. All of those things are sustainable. I wouldn't recommend it, but it clearly works when you don't have the personnel to be accurate.

I can see the Seawolves following the same blueprint.

Not sure in what thread to put this in, so here we go:

Fairfield University announced today that Jay Young, the University’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach, has stepped down from his position and will be leaving the University.

Congrats, Frankie. You were a great Seawolf. Best of luck in Charleston.

Until you play us. Then it's worst of luck.

Pinzon would have been a great get for us - especially now that we've seen he's gone to Bryant.

And just like that, Frankie Pollicelli has entered the Transfer Portal.

Just throwing this out there:

Conference NET:

AE 23
CAA 24

I surely didn't expect this mess. This has to be a bad joke!

It is a bad joke - for this season.

But also know that this is the CAA's floor, and it's right at America East's ceiling.

So days will be brighter, for the league and this program. I mean, our injury list is ridiculous, and although we weren't world beaters with a full team, we also wouldn't be in the mess we're in with them either.

Next game I would like to see the zone cleaned up not so relaxed against the high post and contest better on shooters. Conceptually the zone should be good for us. Hopefully some of that offense in the second half rolls over go inside out not outside in. Opens up driving lanes and free throw attempts are good shot at about a 82 percent clip. IMO policelli is better served with that post up action rather than trying to force a drive or spot up threes. Like to see sarvan try that too.

1000%. Playing a really effective and aggressive 2-3 zone takes practice, drilling and repetition. For a first time appearance (I think), they did okay. If they keep at it, they'll look back at this tape in two months and be embarrassed.

It's not just closeouts. It's how your feet are positioned during a closeout that takes away options from the offense. It's timing on when to close out on the high post (delayed, with arms out to stop pass to short corner). It's making quick reactions without thinking about where to go. If they keep at it, it'll improve - AND IT'S AN IDENTITY!

Unfortunately they've been in the zone all 3 games. In fact it got carved up by a USCAA (not even NCAA) team on Friday and Geno admitted in the post game he probably should have switched back to a man-man once the started hitting 3's but was slow to react. Same story in the second half last night.

Ah, good to know. I didn't see the first two games. Small fundamental mistakes against good competition will carve them up, if not early, than later. Might not be a bad idea to switch from the 2-3 to man to a 1-3-1 and even calling blitzes on the ballhandler, etc, rather than sticking to one defense.

Defensive rebounding in a zone is a challenge, in that you have to race to your area instead of just turning and boxing out (because there might not be anyone in the area to box out). Again, they'll learn that if they stick to it.

They should be taking away the threes. Again, on tape this'll be glaring.

This is my first Stony Brook game this season. Is the 2-3 new?

To play an effective 2-3 requires a ton of drilling. Foot positioning, for one. It's different for the wings as it is for the guards up top. Also, making rotations that you wouldn't make in man. For example, when the ball hits the high post, the guards have to fan out and find shooters (instead of collapsing). Also, understanding where the soft spots are (short corners) and what to do when that happens (trap).

My point is that making a 2-3 work takes time to get it right - and we're getting a lot wrong in this game. Ford will use the tape to correct the team. However, I really like the idea, especially with the two very big bigs.

The HS team I coach likes playing zone because it forces our opponents to play their third or fourth best offense against us - and it disrupts their practice plans where they have to prepare for us in a chaotic way.

With two slow bigs, this is a really nice strategy. But we're not there yet. Not close.

Just started watching the game.

That 2-3 defense is lax. Definitely not Syracuse's 2-3, which is active and extended. Easily screenable if the wings don't pop up. Especially with a big man in the middle, I'd think you'd want the forwards extended out. (We coach Syracuse's 2-3 at the high school level, and we see zones of all types)

Fitzmorris is really slow and really big.

UPDATE: We made subs, and the 2-3 is definitely more extended - and Moritori is even bigger. Holy smokes!

I hope the writer of those Statesmen articles sees this post because I just wanted to say that they were extremely well-written and researched. Well done, young man!
