Greg Melendez is really interesting. He has started every game he has dressed for in college career that included stops in the CAA and Big Sky, so I have to figure he'll find his way on the field.

We also should have some impressive preferred walk-ons that will be joining the team in August like first team all state WR/DB Nick Wagner From Glenn.

What strikes me is what Priore said during the announcement. Most coaches (including Priore) are hesitant to over-promise on the upcoming season. Usually all you would hear is "we're going to compete for the conference championship." This time, Priore said that SB is competing for the NATIONAL championship. The team has to be absolutely loaded for him to go out on a limb like that.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: ecasadoSBU on February 02, 2012, 10:33:22 am
To say anything less would be b.s... He has to say we are competing for a National Championship. After last year's performance (getting to the NCAA 2nd round) there is no doubt that we no longer looking for Big South Championships alone. This team is improved and we should see improvement and hopefully get further on the tournament next year.

One thing I really like to see is how well we match up against the FBS teams we play the upcoming season. That Army should be wonderful exposure for this team. The Syracuse matchup, most likely on TV will also be a hugeee game.

I would be mildly disappointed if we didn't come away with a win against either Army or Cuse. Very disappointed if we didn't at least play both games close (10 point margins).

I didn't see Popek mentioned among the recruits, but it's reported that he signed. He's a kicker out of the city (Staten Island I think). Has a massive leg...some say pro potential.

I'll be seriously disappointed if we don't get an FBS win this season. I don't think either game is out of reach, and to win either would be great publicity for the program.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: ecasadoSBU on February 02, 2012, 06:35:48 pm
I wouldn't be. I would be seriously dissapointed if we don't win the games we are suppose to win, our FCS matchups.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: sbufan on February 03, 2012, 08:43:29 am
That's the thing ecasado, I think this team is so stacked that we might be favored over Army and thus that could be a game we should we win.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: jaghatai on February 03, 2012, 09:15:08 pm
To be fair, FBS teams just don't lose to FCS teams.  For 2011, FCS went 6-87 against FBS teams.  We shouldn't be disappointed with an FBS loss.

Now that being said, I would love to see a win, but as long as they play them tight and keep it close, I will be quite happy.  Now the other 8 games are games I think we SHOULD win, CAN win, and NEED TO win.  Anything less would be disappointing.

I think 9-2 is  reasonable when you count Pace.    Have to feel we can beat Army-they run all day with a minimal passing game. We can do both very well and I think Sam Houston  State was stronger all around than Army.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: ecasadoSBU on February 03, 2012, 10:40:26 pm
...we would never be favored over a FBS team. they have more scholarships, and more depth as a result. The only thing I want is that the team competes. I was proud of this team's effort against UTEP and disappointment never went through my mind.

With Kyle Essington as QB, which IMO has proved to be a better quarterback that Coulter, we should be able to compete even better against FBS, but lets not get fooled. To expect a victory against BCS FBS Syracuse is asking a bit too much from our team, even if WE DO have the talent to beat them. Playing at Carrier Dome against a BCS team, with 40k fans rooting against you, the intensity of the game, when you add all of that even Talent will be hard to get you through that. I would say the same for Army despite them being less talented.

I would love a victory against the FBS, it would definitely be great for our resume, but its not something I really care about, and definitely not something I'll be disappointed about.

We have to win against those that on our level, That's what truly matters. Get those 9 wins against the FCS and Pace and get into the playoffs!

I don't think you guys are appreciating how good this Stony Brook team could be next year. Coker will be the best player on the field in EVERY game we play. Our very young offensive line last year blocked for a pair of backs that ran for over 3000 yards. With another year of maturity and the addition of one of the best running backs in all of college football, we'll put up points against everybody.

Also we need an FBS win if we want to be considered for an at large bid to the playoffs. Thus, it will be disappointing if we don't win one of the FBS games because then we'll have to go on the road and beat Liberty, Coastal, and Presby. I'd really like to have the security blanket of an FBS win.

Sagarin has Syracuse rated at 86. Army at 112. Sam Houston at 62. With the addition of Coker and a few others, you don't think we're closer to Sam Houston's level than we were last year? Yes, there's a home field advantage for Army and Cuse, but I still favor a win against Army, and at least a 1 in 4 shot against Cuse. I'd certainly like to shut up their ignorant fans.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: jaghatai on February 04, 2012, 12:40:42 pm
I totally agree about shutting up the fans.

I think we can be competitive with the FBS teams, I just won't be disappointed with losing to them.  Now if we get blown out, thats a disappointment.

9-2 is very, very possible.  I'm definitely looking forward to the season.

I love it.  SB can get not just one but multiple wins over FBS schools this year.

You gotta dream.  You gotta dream it before it happens.

I really believe  we can beat Army.  Syracuse I dont know   like to see us stay in it as we did against UTEP . Then anything can happen in the 4th quarter!

Also we should note that we have 3 more scholarships to give out. Last year we brought in major contributors Mulrooney and Solice after national signing day, so I wouldn't be surprised if we land some more impressive transfers/recruits.

Sam Houston, Syracuse, and UTEP are all within a 30-team range (out of 246 teams) by Sagarin, so if SBU could play with Sam Houston and UTEP, they can play (and possibly beat) Syracuse.

Coker's on the roster now.

It looks like we lost Craig Richardson and Alex Probasco. Both were starters on D in 2010, but seemed to have been passed on depth chart by guys like Trujillo, Francklin and Solice. It would have been nice to have kept them around though because they are both proven commodities on the field that could provide solid depth for us.

Not a bad "problem" to have— "solid" guys transfer because even better players will get the playing time.

Da'rell Hatcher hasn't gotten a lot of press, but he has a really impressive highlight video. I like him more than either Bedell or Crossan from a pure running back point of view.

I saw him  play this last season . An Ed Gowins clone.  He bounces off defenders and keeps  driving very tough to bring down .    Hope he gets some playing time unless they red shirt him  with Maysonet  graduating next after next season.

Here's an article on Coxson transferring to Stony Brook with quotes from OC Jeff Behrman. We haven't talked much about Coxson but he could be VERY good. There just aren't many guys that are 6' 1" and can run a 4.42 40

We just added another BCS transfer with the signing of Minnesota's Leston Simpson. He doesn't have any tackles while at Minnesota but it looks like he appeared in every game he was available for, and my rule of thumb is if a kid is getting on the field at a BCS school, they'll get on the field, and probably be quite good, here.

So I think we have two scholarships left, and we could still use a transfer at corner to make up for the loss of Hutchins and Porter. I think Dominic Clarke from Ohio State is looking at Stony Brook and that could be a another great addition for the Brook.

I'm getting so hyped for this Stony Brook team. Are we truly National Championship contenders?... That is the first time any program at Stony Brook is a contender (Lacrosse is arguable) and for it to be football is amazing!

Anybody notice how transfers are coming back to the island to play for SB:

That is huge. We are getting attention from transfer recruits who realize they have a place they can play at closer to home. I'm glad to see Stony Brook getting transfers that originally resided in the island.

Leston Simpson - Minnesota - Springfield, NY
Greg Melendez - Idaho State - Brooklyn, NY
Dimetrius Bernard - Fresno - Jamaica, NY

It's huge. Dane96 made a comment over on the America East board about how Stony Brook and Albany compete for recruits and that's not true. Stony Brook doesn't recruit north of westchester and without question we dominate recruiting on the island compared to Albany. Then we recruit nationally in Florida, Texas, and California, Albany doesn't ahve the budget for that. Lastly they can't bring in the FBS transfers we bring in. There's really no competition in recruiting between the two.
Title: Re: 2012 Recruiting Class
Post by: ecasadoSBU on February 17, 2012, 11:45:48 pm
the Albany not playing Stony Brook situation, for me, is nothing more than a SUNY bragging rights situation and something that can hurt Albany in the long run if they decide to move up in FCS full-scholarship.

I also disagree with Dane96's comments over having the same recruiting pool. Its getting clearer and clearer every season that we are recruit better players, not only from the region, but from the entire country. Stony Brook has a strong hold on potential FCS recruits in long island and I doubt they are affected by Albany's recruiting patterns. If Stony Brook has a successful 2012 season this recruiting differences will be even more obvious.

The only reason I made those comments to Dane was to annoy him. I love annoying him, he acts like he's a know-it-all and that pisses me off....lol

Looking at their roster. Only a few kids overlap with Stony Brook's recruiting region. Mostly from the city. I only saw two or three from L.I (Suffolk + Nassau).

Priore has always brought in transfers to help immediately build depth at positions where we lost players to graduation. What's remarkable about this years recruiting is that the transfers coming in aren't juco's, they're BCS players.

Just saw two more incoming freshman for the fall. MSG Varsity page listing both NYC & LI rosters for upcoming Empire Challenge All Star game has Mike White 6'2" 260lbs OG from East Islip, and Austen Maccia 6' 200lbs LB from Tottenville both attending Stony Brook in the fall. The page was last updated on 5/21 so it seems that these guys would be prefered walk ons. Google empire challenge roster 2012 for info. I will try to get more info on them.

Watched Aaron Thompson DE from Deer Park play last night in the L.I. v NYC Empire Challenge. What a beast 6'4" 245 fast and stronge. He totally dominated these kids from NYC. Marty Lyons of the Jets was raving about him on the telecast. Chris Makulik H-Back from Pat Med is another big kid 6'2" 240, great blocker should fit that position well for us. Joewillie and I were there in person and these kids are jacked. Also our Lax recruit Steven Ferreira was the best QB on the field (2 other LI qbs are going D-1 princeton and Rutgers) and this kid was clearly better. They said on the telecast that he did not get a single offer for football the only offer he got was lax for the Brook. Boomer Esiason could not believe that he had no offers. Maybe Priore takes a look.
