The latest ...
11/25 at Bryant
11/28 FAIRFIELD
12/1 SACRED HEART
12/9 at Hofstra
12/12 BRYANT
12/22 at Fordham
Full schedule: https://stonybrookathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule/2020-21

This schedule was built to be tough given all the seniors on the roster. The seniors that defected.
-
ill keep saying it- the formula we had before wasnt working. maybe this new one will.

I'll 2nd that. 1-2 in AE playoffs last 2 years (all at home), says it all. Time for the new kids to get hungry.

True. A change was definitely needed. Let's see what happens with a team full of Juco transfers. Maybe they can get together somewhere and start practicing, under the radar.
-
it worked for hartford- to an extent.
otherwise we've been on a sugar high for 10 years: 20+ wins against a mixed bag of opponents, and abysmal tournament performance (considering our talent and the AE competition).

Change to what? We tended to play well in the non-conference but then fell apart during conference play. You'll never hear me bash Heilbron for putting together a tough schedule. I'd be super pumped to play those teams had we not lost everyone and Covid didn't happen. I'd suggest scheduling creampuffs for the next couple years after this since it's clear Ford can't coach worth a damn and we won't have the roster to compete with anybody good.
-
Hi, an American University fan here (yes, we exist). Any idea if there's a return game up there next season with AU? I kind of doubt y'all did a one-off with us at our place last year. Thanks.
-
Curious about the MSG game.. wonder who it can be? I would love a St. John’s match up but don’t think that’s it.. I also hope it’s not the holiday festival, attendance is never good for that festival.
-
Nice game for the new team now on the docket:

Wow really excited about playing at msg in this doubleheader.. garden should have great attendance.. does anyone know what “tournament” this will be? Want to try to get presale tickets ..

Do you really think there will be Basketball games played this year in NYS? I wouldn't get my hopes up playing at the Garden with Emperor Cuomo at the helm. He is threatening to close down the Hamptons and NYC if the hard-working, taxpayers are not complying with his Executive Orders. You just dont know what he is going to do to this City at any given time.

I am hopeful but doubtful, at least with fans. It just feels like too volatile a situation.

I have my doubts we even have the NFL this year. Expecting college basketball is a pipe dream at this point.
-
We better our chances for a season if SB opens a satellite campus in Georgia in the very near future. Gonna be tough sledding in NY
-
maybe this is the time to leverage that southampton real estate...
::)
-
Another nice road contest for us – at Yale, per Rothstein. Date TBA.
-
First home game on the ledger: CCSU on December 15. I still can't see there being fans in the stands.

The NEC game.
Now, why we had to go on the road to play Wagner last year, I still don’t know.
-
Worth noting that we'll get American back at our place this season. The Eagles lost all-everything guard Saeed Nelson but have a nice nucleus coming back.
-
The Ivy League has canceled all sports for the fall and it won't hold any games in the winter season until after January. The Yale game seems highly unlikely. I could see there being a feeding frenzy now ... Yale was scheduled to play us and Siena, maybe we play Siena. Howard was supposed to play Harvard, Penn and Yale ... maybe we play Howard.
Yes, I realize that everything is in doubt. But if it's a go in the winter, maybe that's a way to fill the schedule.
Edit: Per D1Docket, "at least one other conference" is likely to follow suit. My bet's on the Patriot League. It begs the question: will tipoff be January 2021 for everyone?
-
I could see all OOC games being cancelled, and the conference slate pushed back several weeks to a month. That means conference play starts in February with the NCAA tournament coming in April, not March. That's an outcome I can be ok with and wouldn't mind all that much. The way college basketball works, any games before conference play (and really the conference tournament if we're being honest) are a total waste of time from a standings perspective.
I expect everybody but the SEC will cancel football this year, but that's another sport entirely.
-
somewhat related but stanford kills 11 sports.
-
Beginning of the end for college sports??? The Stanford news is huge. If state monies are not included in the proposed next round of federal stimulus, then chop, chop, chop. Fringe sports (non-revenue generating) will be cut all over the place. I agree with VA, OOC hoops will be cut (possibly in their entirety), and maybe conference games will be played in front of empty arenas. Reduced revenue stream for basketball, and expect some schools to drop basketball altogether moving forward. Really sucks. Starting to appreciate European soccer so much more though.

Speaking of soccer. if the Europeans can have a soccer league this year, why can the US do the same with Fall sports?? Players all get tested regularly, with no fans, but they are playing with no noticeable issues.
Say what you may but this Coronavirus is purely a political play, and that is wrong. it is affecting everybody in every political group..

Basketball is a required sport for D1 (and I'm pretty sure NCAA wide at all levels), teams must have a men's and women's basketball team. That cannot ever be cut.
I could see schools dropping down to the bare minimum of sports they need to have in order to sustain themselves as a D1 program (16 I believe for FBS schools) with the emphasis being put on sports that make money. I could see a world where schools have football, basketball, and then maybe hockey, baseball, or LAX depending on region (SBU is good at LAX so we keep that one, hockey is a money maker for the Big Ten schools so they keep that, Baseball is big for the SEC they keep that, etc.) with everything else being solo sports they need to bring themselves up to NCAA minimums (track, golf, etc) and the associated women's sports for Title IX compliance. All other sports get dropped. So say goodbye to soccer, baseball, tennis, a whole bunch of sports will get cut.
As far as SBU goes, I'm not exactly sure where/if we'll need to cut yet, but IMO, Soccer will be the first to go. Swimming and Diving, then Cross Country would be next, and if things got really bad, Baseball. Football is safe, basketball is essential, and LI is too good of an area for LAX to lose that.
-
Women's volleyball could be gone too.
-
Personally I love watching and playing volleyball. For selfish reason, I hope we keep women’s vb. May be we can even drop men’s soccer, women’s tennis, and add men’s vb ;D We can join EIVA and play Harvard, Princeton, GMU etc. It’s such a fun sports and so underrated. Requires only 4 schollies for men’s.
-
Women's VB is a headcount sport, so any partial aid given to an athlete in that sport will count towards the total as if it was a full scholarship (same rule applies to FBS football and men's/women's basketball). For that reason along with many others women's Volleyball at SBU is safe. The general proportion of men's to women's scholarship opportunities must remain intact though, so I don't see us adding any men's sports anytime soon. Any pipe dreams of varsity hockey will be gone for quite a while. I contend an FBS move makes sense, but only if it's to a suitable conference. No pulling a Liberty or UMass and moving up just to stay independent.
-
I wonder how LIU feels having added hockey right before their finances went kaput.

There still talks of SB moving up to FBS?? I put a lid on that a long time ago. As long as coach P stays as their HC there won't ever be any talks about moving up. Lets try and get in the playoffs and win a couple of games first.

LIU has women hockey, right. Non D1 competition????
-
well if sports do get axed, i at least will add that they can come back. of course the loss of continuity is a pain; coaches, momentum, recruits, facilities, etc. look at swimming.

No flights for at least one team.

I kinda like the idea actually. Less so for basketball but moreso for football. It would be great if P5/FBS football went regional this year. It would really highlight some of the boneheaded realignment moves of the last decade like West Virginia in the Big 12 among others.
-
Per Jeff Goodman, we'll host a multi-team event with Fairfield and Sacred Heart in late Nov/early Dec.

That's probably what we're looking at this year. Makes sense.

From Ethan Tam ...
The America East has released scheduling outlines for 2020-21:
• 3 weeks of nonconference starting 11/25
• 18-game conference season starting 12/19
• Conference games against same opponent to be held back to back on Sat. and Sun. at the same location
-
wow. vermont week just got better.
also probably allows for more upsets, no? id think maybe a... UNH upset over a top team is more likely if they play back to back days in durham, for example.
-
We officially aren’t playing Florida anymore.

We’ll be at Fordham right before Christmas. This is a nice game for us, one that I hope to see on the schedule more often going forward.
In other news, no Providence and, sadly, no St. John’s either. This felt like a year where they’d be an even more sensible fit than normal.

Why no Providence or St. Johns. You can walk there from SBU! Can't blame the Virus for this decision to change.

I updated the schedule to show with the following, as well as thoughts ...
- Per Newsday, we are likely lined up to play at Marist in the season opener. Marist was recently picked to finish ninth in the MAAC.
- Hofstra will be on the schedule somewhere as well.
- I have to figure out what's going on with the Fordham game. Are we really playing them after the conference schedule has started? Seems unlikely.
- Iona has released its non-conference schedule and, unless we're the TBD at Mohegan Sun later this month, we won't be facing them. That would have been a good non-con test.
- How you doin' Rutgers?
-
Schedule is out. See page 1.
-
https://stonybrookathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule
-
Why so many road games
-
Get the non-conference opponents to come to your place next year.
-
Why so many road games
I questioned that myself recently, but got chewed up
-
Marist is out and, per our schedule, Bryant is in for both 11/25 and 12/12, with the latter now being played here. So a third home game FWIW.
Bryant was picked to finish third in the NEC so not a bad test for us off the bat.
-
The original first game canceled. The new first game canceled. Next first game, canceled. Three have now been canceled.
-
gives our squad more time to gel!

Maybe they should form a Covid-only Conference; might have a better chance of getting some games in :D

Good grief. I give up already. Did some floor cleaner, uncle's best friend, have a fever????

Not a bad idea. Nothing to worry about if a 20-year-old athlete gets Covid anyway.
-
Sucks for the team who is doing everything right. Shame these other teams are being sort of irrational.

More depressing news: Sacred Heart, which we were supposed to play on Tuesday, has shut things down. So Tuesday's postponed/canceled.
https://www.ctpost.com/sports/article/Sacred-Heart-women-s-basketball-pauses-team-15758949
And welcome aboard, New.
-
methinks we are going to be playing farmingdale state again. if lucky.
-
I expect the season to be cancelled before too long, but nobody will want to hear it.
-
ill hear it. im a realist.
query whether this somehow benefits us. who might not return at our competitors?
-
Looks like they re-added a game for this Tuesday against St. Peter’s at 6 pm. I’d leave it all on the court for this game, as this could be our only game at this rate. Undefeated season maybe?
-
St. Johns game just added for this Sunday, at 2:30 PM, on FS1. Pretty cool. SJU is a wildly athletic team, led by frosh Posh Alexander.

Now that I'm excited for. It's during a Sunday in the fall though, so not likely how much of it I'll actually watch, but if it's competitive in the second half I'll definitely tune in. Any game on a national network is exposure enough during a season like this.
-
Soooo ... we’re playing Point Park on Tuesday.
They’re an NAIA with losses to Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo and then three D-I teams.

News came down today that our game with Fordham has been canceled. Which is too bad. I hope we get a shot at them next year.

Yeah, that sucks. Heard Binghamton got pounded with 40+ inches of snow. Hope this weekend’s games won’t be hampered by this.

I don't see how that's logically possible. Even for a place like Binghamton.
-
The next two weeks are out. We no longer have Vermont this weekend but rather we'll host Hartford and then be off to UMBC next weekend.
https://americaeast.com/news/2021/1/24/hoops-schedule_adjustments.aspx
-
I think it's an overly dire prediction from them, but a few Vermont fans are thinking they may end up cancelling the season. If UMBC, Albany, Hartford, and a couple other schools follow suit, we could be dancing!
-
Things could very well wind up somewhat like football where some conferences participate in the NCAAT and some don't. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they shrunk the field or did something this year.
-
just wondering if this is going to push march madness back?
https://www.sportsbetting3.com/ncaabb/march-madness-betting
Looking at getting into over unders this year instead of betting on match ups.
First real time been able to do this so this should come in handy...
