The first Saturday night tip time of the year! I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully the area makes a night of it also.

This has been a nice challenge for us in the past, with this being the fourth straight season we've faced the Bears in non-conference play. And although there's some familiarity and we'll see many of the same faces on the court on Saturday, I'm still not sure what to make of this Brown team.

The core group of Anderson, Hunsaker, Howard and Choh have really elevated the level of the program, helping them hit the 20-win mark for the FIRST TIME EVER last season. Mind you, they started playing basketball at Brown in 1900, only nine years after James Naismith's class played 9 v 9 at the Springfield YMCA. So this is truly uncharted territory for the program – actual expectations!

Their chance to repeat the feat took a big hit in the offseason with Desmond Cambridge transferred to Nevada to play under Steve Alford. There was speculation that Cambridge's younger brother, Devan, would follow him but he chose Auburn instead. The elder can't quite shoot like his new coach but he's still pretty good, having led Brown in scoring (15.7 ppg), blocks (1.7) and made threes (76) a year ago and won conference ROY as a freshman. That Ivy League degree though.

It was a tough hit for Brown but it's not a death knell. This is still an excellent nucleus that should allow Brown to vie for a spot in the Ivy's upper half. Anderson has seized the mantel as Brown's top option and then some, playing 37 or minutes in all but one of the seven games he's played in this season. He's going to do most of his damage from the outside, as will Hunsaker. Choh is an undersized forward who will use his motor to be in on every rebound, which was clear last year when he led the Ivy in boards and was named All-Ivy second team.

Some milestones of note: Otchere needs four more blocks to reach 100 for his SBU career. He's a distant second to Warney in career blocks here (276) but is ahead of him in blocks per game. I also added the Olaniyi point watch above. He should hit 1,000 sometime during conference play and has a good shot at breaking into our top five all-time as a senior – which is crazy because I still don't view him as this guy you feed but he's been so steady for so long.

Yale really beat us up inside with Bruner and Atkinson, but Brown doesn't have those kind of bigs. They got blown out in Lowell without Anderson, but how do you explain a 20-point loss at Navy and a 21-point loss at Sacred Heart with him? Well, they went 15 for 70 (.214) from three in those three losses, and they're 42 for 111 (.378) in their five wins. Hand down. Man down. Let's get after it, fellas. I really think Brown needs a special shooting night to come out on top. It would be nice to get this one with Hofstra, Providence and Virginia on the horizon.

a veteran squad for sure.  i remember when speith's brother was on the team.

thanks checkie!  yes, you should have your own blog, year round, for SB Bball.  and it should be linked on the athletics site!

at the very least you should be a frequent guest on the radio/tv broadcast, particularly pregame where you can cover the background.

i will miss the game due to prior engagements but dogs eat bears 71-62.

GO SB

I already consider Checkmate as an SBU beat writer, but a blog is a great idea!  Wait, this is sort of a year-round blog already, right?  Keep up the good works Checkmate, and remember us little guys as you traverse up the SBU blogging org chart!

Re:Brown, some head scratching games for them to date, but agreed, rather big game tomorrow night, with 3 tough ones after this on the horizon for us.

I will be there tmrw for the game. For those who can’t make it, set ur dvr’s For SNY.

Stony Brook has a very tough OOC schedule coming up. They must beat Brown tonight otherwise, losing 5 in a row is quite possible.

Ha ha, you guys are funny. But when you consider the pedestrian Newsday coverage of the team, then yeah, this is what we’re looking at.

Re: the importance of tonight, KenPom has us losing the next four - close ones to Hofstra and American, by double digits to Providence and Virginia. So yeah, gotta win when we’re supposed to. We should be dogs in every game unless we somehow pick off one of the power teams and gain the upper hand on American.

Providnece was losing by 12 to Rhode Island last night . We have a better shot beating them than Hofstra.

Big minutes again for Chef. Great entry pass to Olaniyi for a layup, and a nice lefty jump hook. Liking this.

Elijah has sacked the arrow shooting thing thank goodness.

Lots of forced shots in the early going. Some important minutes from The Chef, who helped quell this early Brown storm.

Good finish to half overcoming that early 10 PT deficit. Elijah really getting pummeled tn. Looks like he hurt his neck on that last drive.

From down 20-10 to total domination.  That second half was the best half of bball I've seen us play in a long long time.

Not going to lose many games when you knock down 14 threes. Not going to lose ANY games when you assist on 79 percent of your baskets. In particular I thought our interior passing was terrific.

This really started on the defensive end though. Brown had its way for 10 minutes and really made it tough on Otchere by getting in the paint. I thought we pushed out a little bit further and made them uncomfortable, and that took them out of their flow. None of their guards wanted any part of Otchere or Gueye; they were really effective defensively without chopping down on the shooter.

Huge night from Olaniyi. I wonder why he didn’t start. Hell, bring him in off the bench every night! It’s obvious that he’s really worked on his three ball; better and more confident with it. 44 percent from deep? Really? And Garcia at 46? It’s nice to have an array of shooters.

The crowd was great.

Very convincing win against a pretty good Brown team .  Latimer had an off night but some of his team mates made up for it.

I thought that Brown had 2 exceptional players: Choh and Anderson (who didn't shoot particularly well, but is extremely ellusive), but they didn't have enough fire power against our solid D.

I've been holding back on praising Elijah this season, because he still takes some deep 3's out of rhythm, but seeing him live tonight, seeing how hard he works on the court, I can do nothing less than tip my cap to him.  He has really worked on his shooting, and has embraced his lead role on this team.  An awesome night for him, despite getting knocked around all night physically.

I love what Geno is doing (so far) with his roster.  He gave meaningful minutes tonight to Chef, Mac, and TPP, all of whom played well.  The one thing that really turns me on about this team is DEPTH.  Any of 3 or 4 or 5 players can lead the team in scoring on any given night, and looks like we have 9 who will play regularly.  Geno is mixing it up nicely so far.

3 stars tonight for Elijah, 2 for Makale and Garcia, and 2 for Mo, who I thought was an absolute defensive force tonight, and had 7 dimes, some of which were amazingly creative.

I think this team is ready for its tough, upcoming road schedule.

P.S. Almost 3,000 tonight at the arena.

Newsday article on game:

Elijah Olaniyi's 30 points lift Stony Brook over Brown
By Brian Heyman
Special to Newsday
Updated December 7, 2019 10:09 PM

Saturday night’s game against Brown began like no other this season for Stony Brook. Elijah Olaniyi was parked on the bench.

The Seawolves’ top scorer hadn’t practiced the previous two days because of a neck strain. He called his coach, Geno Ford, at around 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon and said he still couldn’t turn his neck but wanted to play. He soon texted Ford and said he was playing.

Ford sent him in after three minutes of the game had passed, and Olaniyi turned in the best game of his college life.

The 6-5 junior guard lit up Island Federal Arena, hitting six threes and scoring a career-high 30 points to power Stony Brook to a come-from-behind 79-63 win.

“Coming into this game, I actually was a little defeated, just bad timing, upset with myself,” Olaniyi said. “But then when the trainers told me I had an opportunity to play, it was like half of it was mental. I just kept telling myself, ‘Hey, you’re good. You’re good. You’re good.’ ”

He indeed is good. He averaged 12.3 points last season. Now he’s at 19.7 points. He has led the Seawolves to a 7-3 start. This time, he shot 11-for-15 overall and 6-for-8 from behind the arc.

“He does a lot of things really well, but his best characteristic as a person is his toughness, and I love him to death,” Ford said. “And his other characteristic is stubbornness. He is mentally tough. He’s physically tough. He’s just a winner.”

Olaniyi hit a three 22 seconds into the second half to give Stony Brook a 36-27 lead. Tamenang Choh, who paced the Bears with 19 points, countered with a three and a layup to get it down to four.

But Andrew Garcia responded with a three, and the Seawolves began to build the lead again, using a 10-2 run to go up 44-34.

Stony Brook remained in control from there. When Olaniyi hit his sixth three, Stony Brook led by 14 at 58-44. When Miles Latimer hit a three, the margin was up to 17 at 66-49. When Makale Foreman hit a three, the cushion had inflated to 20 at 71-51. The Seawolves finished with 14 threes and 22 assists.

They had been ineffective early in the game. Brown (5-4) grabbed a 20-10 lead, But Stony Brook took over at that point, going on a distance 23-7 run to close the half, good for a 33-27 lead.

“This was an elite offensive performance for where we are in the season,” Ford said.

Foreman chipped in with 17 points. Now the Seawolves have some tough road work ahead — against Hofstra, Providence and defending national champ Virginia.

“I think it’s going to challenge us,” Foreman said. “We’ve got good team chemistry. I think going into this stretch will be good for us.”

Olaniyi said it’s about something else as well.

“I feel like this three-game away [stretch], we have a chance go and earn some respect right here,” Olaniyi said. “In years past, I don’t think anybody respects us. We know the talent we have in our locker room, but I don’t feel like other teams know that. This is a great opportunity to go show that.”

I watched it on SNY but think it was also on ESPN+  - the replay should be up there.

As an aside for anyone who watched the broadcast - was the sideline reporter as unprepared and unpolished as I felt she was?

Who was she? I'm not going to lie – at the game, it was kind of cool having a legit station covering one of our games. And she wasn't ugly – from 100 feet away anyway but a safe assumption as it's TV. I'm sure SNY just gets a bunch of kids just barely out of Syracuse to do these gigs.

I think she's cute. But I also think this is exactly what SB needs to get the name brand out. keep winning games, brag about it and let the nation know this program id for real!!!

I saw her at the game, and she was cute and very young.  At the risk of sounding sexist (and being banished for 5 years from this board by CoB), it appears more and more that TV sports programming is focusing on eye candy in football and basketball, at the expense of quality analysis.  There are certainly some really good female analysts out there, but I am seeing more that are just being hired for their good looks alone, IMO.

Most definitely they are going for good looks, but why not? If she can appeal to the mainstream audience, manly man, and actually sounds like she knows what she is saying, i say go for it. Cant get in trouble if the female has all the tangibles for the job and assets!! lol.
