Get your helmet on for this one. It's going to be physical, ugly, and frustrating once again as we take on a Manhattan team that likes to muck it up.

A few weeks back, Will Brown predicted that it would be UA's "ugliest game of the year" and it certainly was for them, shooting just 28 percent against Manhattan's matchup zone, with the Jaspers prevailing in the end. We'll get the same thing, just like we did last year when we were lucky to escape Riverdale with a W. They're going to play a million guys who are all going to play their asses off, and we have to find a way to fight our way through the thicket to victory.

This isn't a good offensive team we're facing. The top two scorers, Greene and Stewart, shoot under 35 percent for the season, including under 30 percent from three. Greene's a hard-nosed kid who has an appetite to score and will compete on the defensive end as well. He committed to Loyola (Chicago) out of LuHi – same graduating class at Policelli – and opted to stay closer to home four months later. This is months after Loyola made the Final Four so I wonder what actually took place there. But anyway, at Manhattan he had a modest freshman season, starting every non-conference game before playing a reserve role when MAAC play hit. Stewart is almost strictly a three-point shooter, but he's one of those bratty guards who will dig and get steals to get Manhattan going the other way.

You may recall Paulicap as clearly the best player for the Jaspers last season, going for a career-best 24 and 10 with five blocks against us. I like his game.

But the game's not going to be pretty. With the way they guard, an emphasis will be put on ball control, and we have to capitalize at the free throw line. Manhattan is fifth to last in the country in fouls per game (nearly 24 per). On the plus side for the Jaspers, they are +4.8 in the turnover margin column, forcing 18 a game. We've seen McKenzie and Foreman on the floor at the same time, and I could see that backcourt being used in this spot as well. URI's veteran guards helped them prevail, in particular the kid Dowtin, who penetrated and either scored, distributed or got to the line. Now, he's an all A-10 caliber talent. We have to hope Foreman can have similar success as a triple threat in there.

It's a big spot for our freshman guards. Are they ready to play some big minutes against a team that lives to make the opposition uncomfortable? Let's not forget that Steve Masiello is from the Rick Pitino coaching tree. Those Louisville teams were hellions too. But can Manhattan score enough?

First one to 60 wins. I think it's us.

Stony Brook opens as a five-point favorite. Right in line with KenPom as usual.

working the ball inside to otch (low) and garcia (high).  as a result, hitting threes (3/8) and up 23-12 against a good team.

i like the way MC plays.  the push out on the perimeter and are also running an early full court press.  they are intense.  though let's see what they look like after 100min running only 9 bodies.

MC does look a little sloppy with fouls and passes.  whatever our plan is- it's working so far.

otch had a big first half on both sides.  mo had two early fouls so the chef is in and looks alive- id like it if his first instinct on a rebound is to pivot and putback.

Dominant 1st half. Outstanding boards on the offensive end. Big Jeff with his 2nd solid game in a row. Chef with useful mins with Mo’s early 2 fouls. The core guys doing what they do. Checkmate on point with his description of Manhattan’s poor shooting.

Where’s the crowd tonight??? Place looks empty on tv (at least the 200’s). No wonder I was able to get $5 tickets for Saturday’s game.

Solid first half  our big guys look good tonight .  Scoring and rebounding , Latimer having trouble finding the basket hope he can pick it up in the 2nd half.

We could not have been less worried about the Manhattan zone and pressure on the ball up the floor. TPP handled it effortlessly in that first half - he looks really good. Three turnovers is just a tremendous effort.

Garcia is doing work from inside the zone, whether it’s on 15 footers at the FT line or going to the goal. Our mid-range game has been good.

Manhattan truly woeful offensively. Greene is only a modest threat as their top scorer. Nobody is capable of putting up really taking it to us.

Nice half for Otchere and good minutes for Chef. It’s anecdotal and inconsequential but Gueye’s first foul was a cheap one and his second was a joke call.

Worst crowd that I’ve seen in a long time. It’s nice to stretch out but geez. What’s it going to take to make this an event in town?

Wow, we’re 7th in the country in rebounding. And that’s with Yeboah loss too.

Got sloppy the last 2 minutes or so but a good win .  Big Jeff just missed a double/double  maybe Saturday . I think the crowd  was sparse due to the snow really getting nasty out there now .

we only took 20 three pointers, and instead worked the ball inside, and took jumpshots.  and we obliterated MC.

Geno cited Garcia's patience. Totally agree. He did great work from the high post.

I'd say that he'd get the game ball, but Otchere is a close second. It was interesting to see us feeding him on the block and to see him take the initiative offensively. Geez, if he can stay on the floor, he's such a force for us.

I know his stats aren't much, but TPP looks like he's going to be a real player. I thought TSM was going to be a DNP-CD or due to injury, but then he played the last few minutes. TPP has clearly established himself as a valuable option at the 1, and he's not just moving the ball from side to side either. He can go score.

Paid attendance was 2,083 but I'd guess attendance was closer to 800. I'm not that good at those kinds of estimates but definitely no more than 1,000.

I was skeptical of Geno coming into season, but I love his straight-shooter and analytic approach to game analysis, and he has won me over.  I really thought he was a cheerleader-type coming into the season, but he's so much more than that.  It always starts at the top, and I really think we have ourselves a leader and basketball coach.  Kudos to SH for selecting him and keeping the team and continuity together - it all easily could have fallen apart with the departure of Boals and Akwasi.

TPP is still a rook, but he showed some really good flashes last night, so I agree.  And if we can get 25 minutes from Big Jeff, what a force to be reckoned with in the paint.  I'd be happy with a stat line of 2 points, 10 boards, and 2 blocks every game from him.  Mo needs to stay on the court as well - that's 2 subpar games in a row for him.  And how about our 3rd big option, The Chef - 8 boards last night; not too shabby.

As Seawolf97 stated, maybe the weather may have had an effect on the no-shows.  SBU isn't padding the attendance stats, are they?

I meant to mention Chef again. You're right – he was EXCELLENT and so important with Gueye in foul trouble. One of Chef's best games in recent memory without question. I loved how he went up and got the ball with two hands and how he battled for loose balls. He didn't try to do too much and understands his role and value to this team.

one disconcerting stretch was at the end- the full court press got to us with 2min left.  twice.

i could look at this as- we barely turned over the ball for 38min, with the press.  so all they got was 2 TOs late in the game against our bench.

however, the way i saw it, it was two guards down low, and all of our forwards downcourt.  where's the help!  i know, it was late in the game and we were probably gassed... either way, great game boys.

Of the 3 bad TO's I recall, no way Garcia should be bringing the ball up from backcourt...EVER.  Mac is usually very good with protecting the ball, and had his pocket picked twice - I attribute those to lack of concentration by him, with a big lead in hand.  So impressed with how Makale, Elijah, Miles, and to a lesser extent, TPP,  broke the press with ease throughout the game though.   Remember how worried many of us were about the PG position going into this season?

P.S.  Makale threw that ball away once, right after a TO.  Total anamoly, IMO.

Elijah Olaniyi, Andrew Garcia, Jeff Otchere help Stony Brook top Manhattan
By Brian Heyman
Special to Newsday
Updated December 2, 2019 10:58 PM

Geno Ford had a job for his 6-11 junior center, Jeff Otchere, on Monday night when Stony Brook met Manhattan at Island Federal Arena: Don’t let Pauly Paulicap go off like the 6-8 forward from Elmont did last season when he scored 24.

“Jeff was challenged, which happens,” Ford said. “Good players accept challenges and want challenges.”

Paulicap shot just 3-for-10 and finished with eight points. The Seawolves held the Jaspers to 28.8-percent shooting overall and received 16 points and nine rebounds from Andrew Garcia and 16 points from Elijah Olaniyi on the way to a 65-47 win.

“Maybe (Paulicap) was a little off, but I thought Jeff was excellent with positioning, not fouling, and being straight up and shot challenging,” Ford said. “I thought he was as elite as he’s been in any game.”

Otchere also contributed nine points and 10 rebounds for the Seawolves, who were playing their first game in the comfort of home in three weeks. They had won four of five elsewhere. So they have taken six of their last seven to improve to 6-3.

“We have five guys that are a little explosive offensively and Jeff has gotten himself going, had two straight basically double-doubles, and Jeff defensively triggers everything for us,” Ford said. “So if we can continue to have the chemistry that we’ve had and not get consumed with touches, shots, minutes, any of that stuff, this team can be really, really good.”

Otchere was averaging just 3.9 points over 39 games in his Stony Brook career that dates to last season before scoring nine in each of the last two.

“I feel like I’m getting my groove,” Otchere said.

The game was tied at 11. Garcia proceeded to hit a one-hander in the lane. A 12-1 run was in motion, giving the Seawolves a 23-12 lead.

The press-oriented Jaspers (3-3) went on a 6-0 run. Then Garcia went on a 6-0 run, making it an 11-point game again.

“Coach kind of brought me in at the beginning of the season and asked me my role,” said Garcia, a 6-5 redshirt junior forward, who was the America East Sixth Man of the Year last season and is now a starter. “I said, ‘Just to be everything: Defense, offense, rebound, steal’ — any (way) I could help the team.”

Paulicap, a senior who swatted away two shots to become the fifth Jaspers player with 100 career blocks, had a three-point play to chip it to 29-21.

But Stony Brook opened up the cushion to 37-22 at the intermission and led by 30 before Manhattan scored the final 12 points.
