Title: Mayo and King
Post by: sbufan on January 02, 2012, 02:32:40 pm
what is going on with Mayo? Is he injured and taking a redshirt year? As long as the injury(?) isn't too serious, I could see this being a good thing for Mayo. He has a lot of potential, but obviously needed to add bulk to his frame to capitalize on his talent. I'd be real happy to have three more years with a more mature Mayo.

Also have there been any reports on how King looks in practice? I have raised my expectations for King ever since hearing he has the highest vertical on the team. According to his espn recruit profile he is nearly automatic from three when in rhythm. He's obviously got a lot of upside.

It looks pretty obvious that both are redshirting, which is really good for your future.  Mayo and Warney replace Joyner and Rapier, King replaces Carter.  You really don't have a shot blocker on this year's team, so Mayo adds that.  You also don't have a big who can shoot from the perimeter, so King gives you that....Mayo for 3 years is huge, in my opinion.  Also, I've seen Warney 3 times in person, and he's already better than any of your bigs from a standpoint of rebounding/low post scoring/shot blocking.

Is Mayo redshirting because he wants to spend the year working on his game or is he injured?

I'm really intrigued by King. I think Pikiell said he has the highest vertical on the team and might be the best three point shooter as well. I was happy having him when I thought was just a long body with good range on his jumper. I'm sure his game needs some work or else we never would have been able to talk to him, but still I'm excited to see what he can do next year.

It's funny I really like our frontcourt this year with Brenton, Rapier, and Joyner, but next years with Brenton, Warney, Mayo, King, McAlister (he's going to figure it out at some point) looks very promising despite some new faces.

I've heard rumors about Mayo's ankle/foot being less than 100%, although I wouldn't be suprised to see him and King hitting the weight room hard to have their weight match their height (both are "lanky", which is a nice way of saying they need to bulk up).

I have no idea what is going on with Mayo. I heard a few months ago he was only day-to-day, so I guess he is red-shirting. Pikiell did tell me his plan was to originally red-shirt him last year before the injuries hit. Still, considering how good Mayo looked IMO, I thought he would get some playing time this year.

On King, Pikiell told me that he chose to red-shirt this year. A very good call on his part IMO. He'd be hard-pressed for minutes right now, and as athletic and great of a shooter he is, he looks like a twig right now. He needs to add some muscle pronto, but he has a lot of promise and is very intriguing.
