The 2019 Seawolves baseball season schedule is already up:
https://stonybrookathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=baseball
I am not a big follower of baseball, college or pro... but I wonder what happened to our baseball momentum? Was 2012 CWS appearance the peak? I had assumed that the success and publicity of that year would propel ourselves to a perennial AE juggernaut and regular tournament appearances. Why is the lack of success? talent drop? Can someone with more insight shed some light please?
PS Admin/Mod I think we can unpin all the threads except the rules of the board thread and this thread, please.

I agree we have dropped off since our great season. Coach doesnt even post who he has recruited or signed . I would think kids would love to play here given the new field and our facilities. I dont expect that much again this season . A top 4 finish in the conference would be good.
-
2012 was an aberration; the stars aligned with that team. The Big problem is that big time players don’t play in the Northeast; they gravitate to the south and west. Here on Long Island you’re playing more than 1/2 your season in the freezing cold. Who in their right mind, with exceptional talent, would sign up for that? Only kids that really want to stay home. Don’t blame Senk; the cards are stacked against him when it comes to recruitment.
-
That makes so much sense. Didn’t think about cold. Just look at the list below. Only like 2-3 cold weather schools in top 25!

But I was expecting the team to at least use the momentum to dominate the America East. I believe they've only won 1 title since they went to the CWS. That's pretty disappointing. I do think the Dubin Indoor Practice facility will be a big help for the team though assuming it's large enough to run some drills in their during the colder months.
-
Need some good long ball hitters which we havent had for awhile . Two or three guys who can put it over the fence consistently.
-
Baseball off to a good start winning tonight at FIU 13-7 . This is a Confernce USA Program so nice win on the road.
-
Baseball comes from behind Saturday night and wins with a 9th inning Homer. Our Seawolves are 2-0 .

I saw that. These kids are hitting home runs all over the place too!
-
We havent had many long ball hitters since the 2012 Dream team . Looks like that has changed this season !
-
This team could be really good this year. We've been just a few pieces away but a couple big JuCo transfers have me really optimistic.
It's always challening early in the year for us but its great to see the Seawolves off to a 2-1 start. Obviously the last game was a bit of a clunker but I'll take this start any day of the week.
On a side note, nice to see Daniel Zamora highlighted in the under the radar prospect section on ESPN. If he has a big role this year for the Mets, I'll be stoked as it will benefit my Mets as well as Stony Brook locally.
-
Our long ball hitters did it again yesterday ! Beating SE La 7-4 off a grand slam . The Seawolves are 3-2 on the season .
-
won 10 of the last 11. GO SB
-
won 10 of the last 11. GO SB
I've been following. They look strong this year and are hitting Homer's like I gave never seen them do before
-
Michael Wilson is a beast- kid is playing himself into consideration for a high draft pick hopefully. This team has incredible depth
Team is hitting its groove.

Another demonstration of how weak the AEC is in all sports: SBU finished first in baseball and isn’t even top half nationwide in rpi

they were top 90 a few weeks ago, but their recent slide cost them a lot

This is a horse that's long dead lol. If we want respect in sports, we're either going to have to be the next Gonzaga in all of them, or move to another conference. The AE is considered a joke in everything save for maybe Lacrosse.

Northeast baseball is by default weak. Nonetheless, the team did what they had to do to get the # 1 seed in a pretty weak conference. Can they win their tournament now? Too bad they're up in Vestal.

bad timing.
the AE in this era was normally a middling conference. this year, the worst- by a longshot- the NEC was better, SoCon (all new programs!) and the unthinkable- the MAAC was better.
compounded by #1 seed SB getting blown out at home against #4 UMBC, who snuck in by accident and was 3-8.

We haven’t hosted baseball tourney since 2012, Wonder why

Baseball one win away from securing a spot in the NCAA tournament!
The team is clutch- just need to beat Binghamton once. We will be fairly well rested. This is a really solid team top to bottom.
-
7-5 win. They’re in.
-
Congrats!!! SB Baseball... champions!! 🏆
-
Congrats to the SBU Baseball team on securing an NCAA berth! Selection Show on Monday at 12 PM on ESPNU.
-
Can't wait to see where we end up tomorrow. We're due for another 2012 style run.
-
COngrats Stony Brook baseball! Back on top of the league, where they belong after a three year absence!!!
LETS GOO! Lets get some wins in the tourney!!
-
well done guys. hoping for a haskell cup now.
-
It's official guys!!! We'll be playing on national TV against LSU!!! Friday at 7 on ESPNU. I'm excited and will definitely be watching if not recording the game.
Think we can win this one? 2012 all over again?
-
Very cool. We played and beat them in Super Regionals in 2012. That was an incredible series, especially after dropping a foul fly ball in game 2 that would have iced it. Should be a lot of fun. Best of luck to team!
-
It’s fun to be optimistic but realistically, we’ll be lucky to win one game in the loser’s bracket. The team won one game all season against a top 100 team and barely slipped by weak AEC competition. Win one game in the tournament and it’s a successful season.

We are getting shellacked 17-3 by LSU right now. Oh well.

Maybe for the coaching staff, but 2012 didn't mean all that much to the players on the field. I watched a good portion of the game - our pitching is incredibly weak, and we were clearly intimidated playing at LSU. I hope we can bounce back and show a little more against AZ State today, in the elimination game.

I'm watching the games too. SB two starters are not that good. Wild pitches. Hitting batters. Walks. SB batters can hit though. I guess it's very difficult to have a perfect, all around team in the North East.
-
Very hard to recruit top players in northeast in baseball, pitchers in particular. Fighting here vs AZ St but too many silly fielding mistakes, and pitching not strong enough. Still, 9-5 in the 8th; maybe the bats can win this one for us.

If it’s so difficult to field a nationally competitive team as a northeastern school (which may be the case), then serious consideration should be given to dropping baseball like New Hampshire did. If the baseball program is losing money, which I assume it is, it’s an overall negative for the school. SBU is not attracting good students and faculty because of its baseball program (2012 notwithstanding). The money could be better used elsewhere.

Couldn't disagree more- baseball has become one of the cornerstone sports at Stony Brook. Aside from UConn, there probably isn't a better D1 baseball team in the northeast in recent years. There are a number of MLB players coming from Stony Brook and several on the way as well. This is a pretty legitimate program. We shouldn't overreact to losing to ASU and LSU in this regional- those are two really good teams.
Anyway its a moot point because nobody in the administration thinks that way.
-
I understand your point, but I wouldn’t drop baseball personally. The positive branding that SBU received in 2012 was immeasurable, and was certainly worth the price of admission. Baseball is most definitely a loss leader overall in terms of raw spending and $ return with Senk’s $150k, the 11.7 schollys, and travel budget. However, even though we got crushed in this years’ regional, the publicity we received for being in it is worth value to the university at large, imo. Sports does play a key role indirectly in the ranking world, and I believe baseball plays a small, but valuable part in that.

Plus if we keep turning out major league ball players, I’d assume many of them will give back to the program financially. (i.e. joe Nathan field). This might help mitigate the financial burden the program has on the university.

Seriously :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o. Stony Brook Baseball is well known nationally. A staple, so to speak to this university. I could think of a couple of other sports they could give up before baseball. Tennis anyone!!!!!!
-
In the 2012 MLB draft, which school had the most players drafted? LSU? Arizona? South Carolina? Nope.
Stony Brook. 7 players.
Probably the biggest athletic achievement this school has ever had.
-
Yep, I know it’s not the popular viewpoint but the 2012 CWS appearance is like UMBC beating Virginia last year in basketball. It gets great press for a year but the effects fade over time and it’s unlikely to be repeated without a conference switch. College sports exist to support the academic mission of the university, not the other way around. Moving forward, I don’t see baseball (or tennis, or softball...) doing anything to boost SBU’s academic reputation, directly or indirectly. Most students and faculty couldn’t care less, and attendance figures prove it. Realistically, I don’t think baseball will be dropped, but there’s reason to consider the option given the ceiling on recruiting in the AEC and if the school’s finances require it.
-
Who watches tennis, volleyball, track, etc? They’re all still sports at SB.

Many of those are for Title IX compliance on the women's side and outside of scholarships don't have many huge costs like equipment, shoulder pads, huge coaching salaries, etc.
This is a discussion we're going to need to have at some point about what sports we can keep/emphasize. Despite being in the northeast, our Baseball team making the CWS showed we can field a competitive team up here in the NE. It's not impossible. SBU is a very good school too, so we can attract the athletes. It's tough for us, but not impossible. Baseball is a cornerstone American sport and despite not being exactly well suited for it, it's not one we should drop. Conference realignment will be a hot topic in the coming years and while it's a tertiary consideration at best, baseball is an important sport to the southern based conferences. It's a revenue sport in the SEC for instance. Having it and being relevant in it are bonuses. Getting killed the way we did against LSU and ASU is more a function of being in the AE and not having the talent. Have to switch conferences for that.
-
Hopefully we get a new president with a Power 5 mindset. The state chancellor said that she wants our endowment to be $1 billion in 10 years, so she has “big time” in her mind. Especially with our AAU ties, getting a fresh face in charge in time for conference realignment could be crucial.

Agreed. A new President with power 5 aspirations and Shawn Heilbron who always talks about moving up in conference is what this university needs to be taken seriously in all D1 sports.
Nobody cares about the CAA or the AE conferences. The proof is in the pudding with men's Baseball getting clobbered against tougher competition. I've been saying this for years and years now. SB needs to get out of the bottom basement conferences and moves up. The time is now. It's now or never depending upon who comes in to run this University...
-
My priority would still be the academic and fundraising sides of the University. A lot has been done to improve SB, but more needs to be done. My midwestern niece (good athlete, good grades, good scores, top high school) recently considered a lot of out of state state schools, like UVa and UNC, but SB was never in the conversation. That should change. Maybe being in a Power 5 conference would help.
-
its an important anecdote- we don't compete with those schools. they have 100+ years head start on us of history and tradition, and LI doesnt have the draw of c-ville or chapel hill.
the latter can be fixed though.
-
Power 5?!? Look, SBU has arguably the highest ceiling of any current FCS school as far as aspiring to be in a P5 conference some day (UC Davis is the other that comes to mind) because of our academics, but my God how are we going to get a P5 invite we're not even FBS yet? It's clear the AE/CAA holds us back. That's beating a dead horse at this point. I have no doubt SH is doing everything he can to position SBU the best he can athletically, but these things must be done in steps.
Next step is going FBS and hopefully upgrading everything else in the process. Our best path to FBS is the MAC. That's far and away our best option. We'd be the strongest school academically in that conference and have a natural rival in Buffalo. Plus some of the western schools such as Western Michigan, Toledo, and NIU while not all that great academically, field competitive football teams. The MAC would be good for us. In the process we'd upgrade basketball (MAC was almost a multi-bid league this year) and I'm sure we could figure out where to put the rest of the sports. LAX could probably stay in the AE if push came to shove.
Alternatively, if other schools are willing to move up with us (I'm looking at JMU and Delaware specifically), going FBS as an independent is an option. I'd be VERY wary of winding up like Umass if we did this, but it's an option and with Umass, Liberty, Army, JMU, Delaware, NMSU, and BYU to schedule as fellow independents, it wouldn't be very hard to put together a decent schedule. If we wanted to throw caution to the wind and get SBU into the strongest conference situation possible, we'd go all-in on A10 while shooting for football-only membership in the MAC or C-USA. That would give us the opportunity to shine on all fronts and make us attractive to the AAC if we did well. As enticing as that would be, I think being in the MAC and having the stability of a conference, plus outside shot at the NY6 access bowl is the best situation for SBU to be in.
If SBU moves up to FBS between now and 2025, and then does well there, while keeping the academics up and growing the endowment to beyond $1B (why the hell haven't they given Simons' hedge fund a big chunk of the money to manage!?) maybe by the late 2030's when the ACC's GOR expires, and the Big Ten finally realizes adding a school in New Jersey with the expectation they'd deliver New York was a mistake (lol Rutgers) they'll look at SBU. Either conference would be a slam dunk. I think I'd prefer the ACC simply because I'd prefer winning a conference title in football more than once every 200 years.

I agree on most parts of what you are saying. But to sum things up in a nutshell when it pertains to Football. Maybe SB should consistently be rank in the top 25 before we could even talk about the move up to FBS. Heck, Elon, who is a new member of the CAA and D1 football is ranked in the top 25. SB????? well, keep giving good old chuck P contract extensions every 4 years and maybe SB football can win the championship game one day. At the div3 level that is. Just maybe..

Wrong topic for this forum, but the coaching staff at Maine (#4) apparently does a better job attracting talent to the far northern woods than SBU can, which isn't even among the 42 top teams listed. Something wrong with that.

Obviously, I believe you but that's odd considering how well Matt Senk is regarded in college and pro baseball circles. Probably SB's best coach after (or along with) Spallina.
