Warney (@Fullcoursemeelz) has been a stalwart in both the @nbagleague and for @usabasketball and is expected to join the Mavericks in time to play homecoming road games next week at both New York and Brooklyn.

Quote
Warney has been an absolute force in the G-League this season, playing in 37 games with the Legends, while posting averages of 20.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks across 35.1 minutes. It'll mark a well-deserved promotion to the big league once the move becomes official, though Warney will still likely struggle see very many minutes most nights and isn't expected to be a viable fantasy commodity. The 6-foot-7 forward out of Stony Brook could be available as soon as Saturday's matchup with the Grizzlies as long as everything is finalized in time.

Shocked that it took the Mavs this long- hopefully Jameel gets on the floor a good amount and goes to a franchise that will give him a real shot.

Would love to see him on the Knicks given the lack of people who know how to play defense here.

My son scored 2 tix thru work, so I will be making the trek into the Garden.  We'll be sitting in the Bridge seats, which are pretty cool - sat there once before.

Heading to the Garden on Tuesday. Tickets aren’t terrible on Stubhub, fellas. I’ll bet they’re even cheaper in Brooklyn.

Went to the game. I don’t know if it was because he was playing in front of a home crowd, but Dallas ran a few plays for him. He did a nice job on the pick and roll with Barea - makes you wonder where all that was under Pikiell. Aside from getting stuffed by O’Quinn, he looked pretty good. Hope he gets signed a la Ferrell and Collinsworth.

It was interesting to see Jameel jacking threes during warmups. That’s pretty much all he did - 16 footers, 18 footers, threes. And he was making them!

Definitely a Warney luxury box in the arena. They went nuts no matter what he did. I know at least Heilbron was in attendance, and I’d imagine some of his SBU and RC cronies.

I was there with my son on the Bridge and we sat close to some NJ fans who made the trek. Awesome experience; Jameel played with authority and certainly looked like he belonged. Like Checkmate said, he and Barea ran the pick-and-roll together as if they’d been playing together all season. Dirk constantly showing him love during play stoppages. Proud to be an SBU alum tonight!

Oh, Warney was noticed but got snubbed by all the pro teams because of where he came from. Basically every reporter said so..Had Warney played college ball at any other mid to upper mid major conference he would have been drafted, most likely 2nd round..

I'm a huge Warney fan.

Two or three inches taller, with his college skill set, he gets drafted.

At his height, with shooting and ball handling skills, he gets drafted.

With his improving skill set and work ethic there should  be a spot for him on an NBA roster next year. I  get the sense coaches like him the more they get to know and see him (some players  are the opposite).

Good read in Newsday: https://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/nets/nets-mavericks-1.17456925

An excerpt ...

“He makes things happen,” Carlisle said. “He’s got a nose for the ball, he’s got very good basketball senses, he has great hands, and he plays bigger than his size. He’s got a very long wingspan. He plays above the rim a little more than you think. He’s what I call a resourceful player, very underrated, underappreciated, but he’s done good things so far.”

Carlisle said “analytic geeks” might focus on limitations and envision less upside for a 24-year-old player, but the Mavs’ coach is just old- school enough to appreciate Warney’s intangibles.

“He makes doubters into believers,” Carlisle said. “Sometimes it takes a while for a guy like him that appears to be undersized to get a shot and show what he can do, but he’s our kind of guy. He doesn’t say nothing. He just goes out and kicks people’s [expletives]. That’s what you like.”

I dont get it. Warney played very well in the 2 games he was in only to be benched the last 2. My guess is he is going back to the Texas Legends after today.. Was that to showcase his skills to other NBA teams?? This could be what they do with players out of the G league. Bizarre!!!

At the end of the day, someone in the Mavs organization doesn't think Warney can play at the NBA level.   I thought it was Carlyle (and maybe it still is), but he made glowing comments for him publicly recently.  Maybe it's the Mavs' GM, maybe it's Cuban.   But Carlyle does carry a lot of weight in the organization.  I hope he gets his shot elsewhere; the Knicks would be a nice destination for Jameel.

Agreed. I wonder if Warney has has option to move into another G league affiliate. He needs to move on with his life..

Or more importantly, does he have the ability to get picked up by another team without the Mavs' approval?  If you read today's news, Harrison is coming over to the Mavs on a 10-day, but he is affiliated with a G-League team other than the Mavs.

Warney played well in the games he was in...why did they bench him for the last 2 games?  I don't think one could ask for any player to have contributed more during the minutes he had.  Definitely a little puzzling...

EDIT: Played well is an understatement...most seasoned players would be hard pressed to put up the #s he did in those limited minutes...let alone a player playing in his first NBA games ever....on a 10 day contract, which adds even more pressure to perform.  I don't see how things could have gone any better.  Hoping he catches on somewhere and really shows what he can do.

I believe if the Mavs don't renew him with at least another 10-day contract he can become a free agent.

He'd be great for the Knicks- young, hardworking talent that is a smart ballplayer.

It's a shame where we are with the NBA where super productive college players continue to get undervalued come draft time and garbage European players become lottery picks.

I am pissed off at the moment thinking about this . I just can't understand for the life of me why Warney sat out the last 2 games. He played well in the minutes he was out on the floor. Hopefully he lands on his feet with a team that will appreciate his basketball IQ and athleticism

Perplexing based on how he played in his 3 games, but my guess is that the club made a decision after 3 games that they were going in another direction with a different guy on the 10-day, and decided not to play him from that point forward.  Professional sports can be ruthless at times.   Hope the kid keeps his chin up, and latches on with another club (this year!).

So, was Carlisle comment about Warney [EDITED]? How do they go from looking for a PF player just to replace him with a G. That is like the Yankees looking for a closer and then they go out and find a 1st baseman..

Either Carlisle was full of it, he was overridden by mgmt, or maybe they were just doing Warney a token solid by bringing him up and exposing him to other teams, given his strong stats for the Legends (and in this instance, maybe they had no plans of keeping him up at all).   The whole thing is quite bizarre especially after producing for the 3 games he was in. Too bad he didn't get to play in front of friends and family at the Barclay Center though.

Talk about emotions swinging from high to low in a span of 10 days.

overall this is a good thing (though, disappointing by any stretch).

warney gets some exposure (and kills it), we get our first player in the big leagues.  he's young and healthy, and there's time.  we can sell recruits on this success.

Tears up the G League
Team USA Basketball MVP (take a look at past winners and the company he is in)
Plays about as well as one could be expected to play in limited minutes in his first 3 NBA games ever
Seems to be an amazingly hard worker, class act, coach-able, no off the court issues

If someone like this doesn't land on an NBA team, you almost have to wonder if big name $chool$ and the NBA have some kind of con$piracy going on where they don't want kids to see that there are avenues to the NBA other than going to these big name $chool$.

Major article on the NY Knicks in today's Newsday re: issues they are facing heading to the future.  Some points are especially interesting in the 1st and 5th questions the article, which ask--" WHO WILL COACH THE KNICKS?" and " CAN THE KNICKS IMPROVE IN THE SHORT TERM?"  Examples of key statements that resonated with me include:

Re: Question 1
-- "They need someone who not only stresses defense, but demands it from his players.  The Knicks haven't truly had that since Jeff Van Gundy, who should be a candidate."  Note: Remember, Van Gundy was the coach for the USA championship international team last year, for which our guy Jameel was the MVP.  By all accounts, Van Gundy loves the guy!!

Re: Question 5
-- "That will depend on their VP of development Craig Robinson.  He has an 'innovative' and 'transformative' plan to develop players
-- "The list of guys Robinson will be working with includes...any young free agents they sign"
-- They will have to "...show some signs of improvement with a good young core..."

The answers are all spelled W-A-R-N-E-Y.  Let's hope the Knicks can spell!!

But, he still can't get a 2 way contract with any NBA team.. I think I know why and it has everything to do with a little,  small town low major college he played for.. Sorry to say it folks but that is how the business works in the NBA. Owners and coaches frown upon giving contracts to athletes from low major schools.. I think it is total horse $hit, but that is the trend....

So you make this claim when seeing a team of guys who went to Stony Brook and, oh by the way, Duke, NC State, Iowa State and Indiana. Please explain.

And BTW, the second team went to Duke, LSU, Baylor, UNLV and Princeton. Want to check out the third team?

Jameel could be on an NBA roster. Some may argue that he should be. We obviously all hope like heck that he will be again soon and that he sticks. We saw him in his brief NBA stint – he looked the part. But let's not act like he's this game changer at that level, or that there's this conspiracy theory that explains a slight that doesn't exist.

Approximately 100 players from DII schools have made NBA rosters over the years. Once you get to the G League (or get some other NBA attention) there are other factors at work than which college you went to.

FWIW, Warney named First Team All G League.

I see what you're saying, but he's first team all G league. There's no good reason why a team wouldn't sign him anymore. He can play, he's proven it, so what are they waiting for? Ignoring him just because of where he went to school would be an asinine move.

It looks like Jameel has signed to play for a team in China.

Hopefully he is making some good $$, he deserves it.

I do hope he still gets more of a real chance in the NBA at some point...I'm no basketball coach or expert, but he looked good enough to at least warrant an even longer look.

Anybody that might have thought that Jameel's stats from his first game in China were beginner's luck should check out his second game:

40 min, 31 pts (64.7%), 11 reb, 4 assts, 2 stls, 1 blk

Another interesting stat is that in his first two games combined he has made 12 out of 14 free throws!  What more does this guy have to prove?!?!  ??? ???

Yes there is. This is why I've been saying for years SB needs to get out of this conference and move into a more respectable conference. The CAA, maybe not a huge leap up in SOS but is definitely a more respected conference than the AE. I wouldn't be surprised if UA and SB make the jump out of here together in the next couple of years..

I disagree with you guys.  There is some bias against Warney for his perceived shortcomings, and apparently there are enough scouts and big wigs around the NBA, that believe that these shortcomings exist.  We've seen guys from DII make it to the show.  At this point, 2 years removed from college, AE has nothing to do with it anymore, IMO.

Still, it sucks for sure, and I really hope he gets his shot this year.

You guys are conflating Warney out of college 2 years and kicking butt in G League and not making an NBA roster with WLax team getting screwed with bad seeds due to AE inclusion.  Apples vs. Oranges, IMO.

If we're talking about Warney not getting drafted immediately out of college vs. WLax seedings, then we're getting warmer.
Title: Re: Jameel Warney to the NBA!!!

I don't think Warney not getting his shot at this point has much of anything to do with the AE given the amount of film available on him, however I do think we should be doing everything we can to get the hell out of this conference. In a lot of ways we've outgrown the AE and it's time to move on to bigger better things. Getting everything into the CAA (and perhaps having Albany tag along with us) should be our primary push right now. Hofstra can try to block all they want, but they alone don't have the votes for that. They have a lot of influence with the other members, but with Elon in the conference now, Hofstra not having football, and JMU having their eyes set on FBS, that influence appears to be declining. Push for the CAA. Hofstra be damned. They're stupid to be keeping us out like this.

Absolutely agree on all fronts.. A little birdie who has a lot more insight then we do said Hofstra is looking to drop hack down the AE for all sports. Obviously if they do this it is because they are having financial problems at that school.. Yhis would be a oerfect time to jump into their grave and go all CAA for sports..

Warner is not in the league because he isn’t a stretch 4 or a wing and is too small to play the 5.

Don’t get me started on WLax.

Let’s go to the CAA.

Has anybody got info on what's happened to Jameel Warney?  By all accounts he was having a super season with his Chinese summer league team--averaging about 23 pts, 9.5 reb., and 4 assts per game.  Now, for the last two games he hasn't played.  The box scores don't even show him as DNP, but he's still listed on the roster.  Any word of injury?

With 1:11 remaining, Jameel Warney finished the night perfect from the free throw line to make it a one-point game, but Texas was unable to capitalize in the final seconds as the Stars closed with five unanswered points to take the victory.

Jackson led the Legends’ scoring efforts and added 7 rebounds, 2 assists while Warney added the team’s only double-double of 13 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Carlisle noted that Warney has been bothered by minor nagging injuries that slowed him down early in the season, but the 6-8 power forward still is averaging 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.0 steals and 0.8 blocks through eight games. He’s shooting 44.5 percent from the field and  28.2 percent from three-point range and is an 88.9 percent free- throw shooter.

But MacKinnon believes Warney is a legitimate NBA-caliber player.

Warney's offensive numbers are way down this year, including almost 10 percent off his career shooting percentage. Some of that has to do with the number of threes he's taking – and missing at too high of a rate. And now, I see he came off the bench and played just 13 minutes in their most recent game.

Nothing suggests that a promotion to the NBA is imminent. I'm glad that he got his shot though.

Ditto that on his shot at the NBA last season.  And my son and I got to see him play live at MSG, which was very, very cool (he had 8 or 10 points that night, I forget which).

If I were Jameel, I'd consider playing overseas in some premier league ASAP, and cashing in on all of his hard work for a few years.  Granted that money is not everything, but I think he deserves some renumeration for over-achieving in his career.

An inauspicious start to Warney's Knick career. He came off the bench and scored four points on 1-of-9 shooting in a 123-98 loss to Rio Grande Valley. His plus/minus has gone from +3.9 to +2.1 to -5.0 in three seasons.

Here's a link to the game if you care to watch. He's wearing #34. https://www.facebook.com/nbagleague/videos/2250459461902651/

Something clearly wrong with Warney this season. Is he still hurt from his injury over the summer in China, or he took a step backward with his Basketball career. Either way  he better jump on that overseas money he could make play ball in either Europe or Asia before it's too late..

Interesting line from Warney in the W-Knicks' last game: 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Especially of note, NO ATTEMPTED THREES. I don't know about you, but I say that they should sack any attempt to turn him into a shooter.

Also of note, Salt Lake's Jairus Lyles (UMBC) had 16, 5 and 5 in the game, and was a +21.

Article on Warney in today's Newsday:

G whiz: Stony Brook's Jameel Warney keeps producing in NBA's development league

Stony Brook's all-time player on trying to get his next call-up out of the G League to the NBA: "All I can do is keep on staying ready and keep on playing well."

Former Stony Brook star Jameel Warney, who had 27 points, plays in his home debut for the Westchester Knicks against the Delaware Blue Coats on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, N.Y.  Photo Credit: Richard Harbus

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The PA announcer introduced the Westchester Knicks’ starters for Saturday night’s G League game against Delaware. He had a new name on the list: “At forward, 6-foot-7, from Stony Brook, please welcome to Westchester, No. 34, Jameel Warney!”

Warney had been here at Westchester County Center before with the Texas Legends. But this Stony Brook legend, who left in 2016 as the program’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and games, was making his Westchester home debut.

Westchester acquired the power forward/center on Jan. 8 from the Legends, the Dallas Mavericks’ affiliate. Warney was in his third season with them since turning pro. That’s just one reason why the native of Plainfield, New Jersey, can view the trade in a favorable light.

“I’m in a better situation now,” Warney said before dominating inside with 27 points in Westchester’s 105-96 win. “Being in the same spot for three years, all of the people see you all the time. So I guess they already know what I can do. So it’s definitely a different set of eyes that can come see me. I’m closer to home now. I’m a big homebody guy.

“Life is all about having new experiences. It’s just another chapter in my life.”

The NBA passed on him in the 2016 draft, but the Mavericks finally brought him up on a 10-day deal last March. Warney played against Houston, the Knicks and Toronto. He scored eight points at Madison Square Garden and averaged nine minutes in his three games, along with 5.7 points and 3.0 rebounds. But the Mavs didn’t retain him and he returned to the G League.

“It was a good experience,” he said. “I’m grateful they gave me the opportunity to play for the team. It definitely made me a hungry guy to try to get back there.”

At the end of the Legends’ season, he was named first-team all-league after averaging 19.9 points and 9.6 rebounds. He also had been the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year in 2017.

“I’m undersized, but at the end of the day, I’ve proved that I can play with the big guys,” said Warney, who offered that he’s 6-8 “on a good day” and 255 pounds. He also said, “I’m working on my range every day.”

Teammate John Jenkins was a 2012 first-round pick by Atlanta. The guard has played 145 NBA regular-season games. So is Warney an NBA-caliber player?

“For sure,” Jenkins said. “His ability to post up and be efficient doing it and his energy and toughness — all those qualities translate to the NBA.”

Warney’s new team played three games on the road after the trade, including one against his old team. Warney, who had averaged 13.7 points and 6.8 rebounds before the trade, scored 25 points against the Legends.

“He picks things up very quickly,” Westchester coach Mike Miller said. “He sees the game well. As much as anything, I think he really knows what he does well and he sticks with it.”

Warney can only hope an NBA team will give him a shot. “I’ve been auditioning for like the last three years,” he said. “All I can do is keep on staying ready and keep on playing well.”

He won’t wait forever. His 25th birthday is Jan. 31. “I think I’m focusing on the last few months, giving my all out, hoping that something good happens,” he said. “But if not, I talked to my agent about something new, maybe go overseas. So the next few months are crucial for me.”

But if you think he’s frustrated about still being in the G League, think again. “I’m not frustrated at all,” he said. “I could be having a desk job, a 9-to-5. I’m doing what I love. It is what it is. I wouldn’t wish anything else.”

Huge problem for Knicks, I agree.  Apparently, KP made it readily apparent that he didn't want to be here any more.  According to Alan Hahn, this deal was in the works for months already.  KP's brother had lots of influence, and the European kid on Dallas (forget name) is one of KP's best friends.

But when Durant and Irving find out that Jameel is on the team, it's going to be hard to keep them away  ;D

After being traded to Westchester, Jameel Warney has been on a tear. He continues to show that he is one of the top post players in the G League. He had an overall solid game against the Greensboro Swarm where he dished some nifty passes and tied his G League high with eight assists. In 11 games with Westchester, he is averaging 18.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game on 53.7 percent shooting from the field.

So, there you have it. Kanter’s gone. Wes is gone. Presumably the Knicks can now tank in peace, and will be bringing in some new 10-day guys for tryouts in the near future (Jameel Warney, I see you).

Lots of Twitter sentiment building for Jameel:

Jameel Warney, the Stony Brook guy, is averaging 18 and 6 for Westchester. John Jenkins averaged 24.8 ppg and hit 42.5% on 3s in Westchester before signing a 10-day with the Wizards Jan. 31. Knicks already gave Kadeem Allen a 2-way after his play there.

With Kanter and Matthews on their way out, that'll leave the Knicks with 3 open roster spots. That's an opportunity to churn the bottom of the roster and bring in players on 10-day contracts.

NYK has 3 open roster spots & will likely look to reward some Westchester players w/a 10-day deal. Some to keep an eye on: Billy Garrett (21 PPG in last 5 G), Jameel Warney (18 PPG in 11 G) & Zak Irvin (10 PPG, 8 RPG). NYK also has interest in John Jenkins, as @NYPost_Berman said

From your lips to Scott Perry's ears in case of #JameelWarney. He would be a treat for #Knicks fans to see a two-way player, a big man who can score, pass and rebound.

There must be something the coaches see in Warney thats keeping him away from the NBA. Is it his height. Is it his inability to hit the 3 balls consistently. I dont know. Hopefully the Knicks give Warney a chance to shine in the NBA..

He’s not a stretch 4.  That seems to be all the rage. He’s also not a 5 or a wing.  So he doesn’t fit most teams.

As Calipari said before, he’s a no-brainer back-to-the-basket, physical power forward 20 years ago. But in an era where shooting, athleticism and switching on D are king, Warney is below average in all of those by NBA standards. That isn’t to say he can’t be on somebody’s bench though.

Fair assessment.  I watched part of his game last night against the Capital One GoGo's.  Up and down the court shoot-fest; kind of ugly schoolyard basketball.  Warney had some great offensive moves last night (yes, back-to-the-basket) and hit a couple of semi-awkward looking 3's, but he was really slow afoot on D, and looked like he was standing around on D half the time.  On a positive note, he was one of the few guys on the court, that looked to pass.

They just signed another 10-day to a guard yesterday. and Fizdale's comment to the new addition was "I really like shooters", so his chances of Knicks' signing this year may not be good.  I'm hoping someone picks him up this season, or he will be off to Europe next season.

The Knicks signed John Jenkins to a two-year deal, and also inked former first-rounder Henry Ellenson to a 10-day. That leaves one roster spot. Not looking good but maybe he can sneak up for a cup of coffee at some point.

knicks vs the red claws just started.

first play is warney with the board and putback.

then two rebounds later and a layup.  he's carrying the ball more.

and drew a foul- and another layup!  and were only 3min in.

I think we're all pretty skeptical about any Warney-to-the-NBA hype, but at least his Westchester stint breathed a little life into the possibility. https://www.ridiculousupside.com/2019/6/20/18693746/twenty-g-leaguers-that-could-get-two-ways-this-summer-ochefu-warney-jones-sibert-randolph

He'll dominate over there, but it's a crime he even had to go all the way out there to play professional ball. Can none of the current NBA teams see he'd at the very least be a solid bench player?? I don't get it.

Newsday article - smart move, cashing in while he can:

Former Stony Brook star Jameel Warney to play in Korea
By Greg Logan
greg.logan@newsday.com @GregLogan1
Updated July 17, 2019 8:44 PM

Former Stony Brook star Jameel Warney invested three G League seasons in the pursuit of his NBA dream, but the payoff was one 10-day contract and three NBA games with the Mavericks two seasons ago. With no solid NBA prospects on his immediate horizon, Warney invested in his future by signing a far more lucrative one-year deal to play for the Seoul Knights of the Korean Basketball League next season.

Warney confirmed the move in an interview with Newsday on Wednesday, saying, “Obviously, I wasn’t going to make an NBA roster, so the next step was seeing what is the best possible spot for me? Where would I be most happy? What is a better environment? What is the duration of the season? After I took all that into consideration, I felt playing in Korea would be the best next step for my career.”

Warney spent the first two seasons of his G League career with the Texas Legends, a Mavs farm club, before moving to the Westchester Knicks at midseason last year. Over that time, Warney averaged 18.1 points per game, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks. There was talk of an opportunity with the Knicks, but when it didn’t materialize, he decided it was time to move on at the age of 25.

“The G League is a great league,” Warney said. “A lot of guys improve, but I gave it three years of my life. As you get older and try to get ready for your future with a wife and kids and thinking about getting a house, you have to understand that, if I give it a good five years, I can set myself up.”

Players on two-way contracts in the G League can make up to $75,000 per year, but most on the G League roster get $35,000 per season. That will change dramatically for Warney in Korea.

“The last few years, it’s been pocket change and you can’t really do anything unless you’re saving every penny,” Warney said of the G League wage scale. “I will make more money in one month in Korea than I would make the whole year in G League. So, you can see my drift. It was a no-brainer.”

Warney had a brief experience playing pro basketball in China last season, but quickly returned home. He explored playing in Europe but liked the idea of a shorter eight-month season in Korea, where they play 54 regular-season games versus a 10-month commitment in Europe. His agent Sean Kennedy has had several clients who enjoyed their Korean experience, and Stony Brook’s all-time leading scorer is looking forward to the opportunity.

“If I just be myself and stay encouraging, I’ll have a good spot in Korea,” Warney said. “I’m focused on trying to help that team win a championship and then see what’s going on in the future.”

After a few years playing there he should be able to pocket a few million while still keeping the NBA dream alive. Either way, he's getting rewarded.

Good for him!  He deserves a nice paycheck in a place where he can be a star.

He's not fast enough and doesn't have enough perimeter game for a prototype NBA 4 and he can't play anywhere else on the floor.  That's why teams aren't high on him despite the G League numbers.

Impressed with his full court play. He showed some Lebron-style moves, maybe just a half step slower...but that’s still pretty darn good.
