Title: 2011: Season Complete - Thoughts on SBU Football...
Post by: ecasadoSBU on December 03, 2011, 07:31:12 pm
Now that our great historic season is over. Is time to highlight and give our thoughts on the direction of SBU football.

Terrific season. This team imo established that Stony Brook can play with anyone in FCS football, and compete with FBS teams.

Looking ahead the future is bright. The running game should still be in good hands with South player of the year (maysonet) coming back and a former NYS high school player of the year (Jevahn Cruz) patiently waiting. On offense we also return Essington, Gush, Norrell, 4 of 5 linemen, and all of our te's/fb's. This offense is going to be ready to roll next season! I think the D will only be better in their second year under Nevaiser, and there's definitely some young talent to build around.

In total we only graduate 6 starters. I expect next years team to get us our first FBS win, and get us right back into the playoffs.

I second that.  This will be veteran team returning in September alot of new guys  got plenty of playing time. . I know we have alot of talent in our redshirts  who will be moving up.   We should be in good shape for another run at the  Big South Title.

First off, I have no complaints at all about this season.

Something that hasn't been mentioned much, but we return 4 starting O-Linemen, plus we get Fernando Diaz to start next season.  I think behind that group, Maysonet is going to have a massive year.

I like the way Priore has been recruiting, and looking at the Big South, what we lose is relatively minor compared to Liberty, Coastal, etc.

I really think the sky is the limit for this team next year.

Go Brook.

So I guess we can all agree that Stony Brook will be a force in the Big South for the upcoming year and we should be shooting for the NCAAs again. We will definitely be the favorites and depending on how well the Big South plays you may never know if we catch two bids... Okay let me stop, maybe thats going to far but I'm hopeful that the Big South continues to climb the ranks while we remain a member of it.

As I said before, SBU Football is here to stay. I'm already excited for the upcoming season. I'll be part of the alumni, another stage!

Don't forget about Masengo on D, assuming he's back in uniform. He's probably the only four star recruit ever in the Big South. Hopefully he's not prone to injury and not realize his potential (as was the case with Gowins), but he would be a beast at this level.

Great atmosphere at the Village Pourhouse on west 46th in NYC.  The bar was packed and erupted frequently!  It was so full i waited nearly an hour for a pitcher.

SB football, i think, is a big play team.  They cause turnovers, press the QB, and throw downfield.  It all sets up the wide open rushing lanes for big runs.  Cant give our OL enough credit.  Anyone see the size comparison between the two teams?  SB has NFL size averages on the line!

Loved that the SHSU fans talked trash all week and found themselves down 10-3 at half.  SB wasnt fast enough, big enough, smart enough, etc.  Turns out they were.

Liberty brought in there own four star recruit last year with Georgia Tech transfer Ryan Ayers, but I agree that he should have enough talent to be a significant contributor for us. We're going to need him to be fit and healthy because we have to replace Kirk and Nelson and he's our only option at the moment. Definitely the biggest question mark for next year is the interior defensive line.

Congrats on a terrific season. I'm looking forward to next year as it will be a true fight for the league championship. I'm glad the schedule swings back in LU's favor with you having to play @Coastal and @Liberty. Should be the first time since 2006 that someone will come into Lynchburg from the Big South and likely be favored to win the game. Iím interested to find out what week the game is, as we know itís not the final week of the season because we play @VMI the final week.

We're also at Presbyterian which I think will be a tough game. Our three toughest conference games will all be on the road next year. I'm hoping we can get our first FBS win next season and take care of business against Central Connecticut State and Colgate so that we can lose one of those games and still have a case for an at large.

I've said it a couple times in various different message boards but you guys will be VERY good next year. You guys were young this year, and most/all of your impact players that returned this year weren't playing or weren't playing at 100%. You lose a couple big name players, but returning almost your entire starting D and offensive line more than makes up for the losses. And after playing the NEC champ as well as the number 1 seed in tournament, I feel safe saying you guys could have made some noise in the play offs this year.

Also it's unfortunate the Liberty Stony Brook game won't be the season finale.

I think a big indicator for where the program is will be how recruiting goes between now and signing day. Two big names to look out for are Stacey Bedell and Dalton Crossan. They are co-hansen award winners and both have a couple FBS offers. To sign either would make a huge statement that we can bring in great home grown talent without them first going to Hofstra.

Liberty will be going into next season with a new head coach. Danny Rocco to Richmond.

Wow thats big news for the Big South.  Sometimes these things have a funny way of working out better for the team losing the coach, however, Rocco did a great job at Liberty lately.

SB's schedule, which has notably increased in difficulty lately, is in this interesting position of having stronger and/or FBS teams up front, and then finishes with conference games.  Theyve been inching forward against the FCS teams (on the whole, that is) and will stun one of them soon.

Lots of credit due for a team that lost its starting QB in week 4.

It's because they lost their starting QB that they improved. No disrepect to Coulter who I'm sure was a fine team leader and QB, but Essington brought mobility to the position that was lacking.

Sorry to hear Coach Rocco is leaving I thionk he is good man  .  The Flames have to regroup , I heard the SHSU  coach is being offered an FBS  job possibly Tulane.   They build programs and move up the ladder.  I'm anxious  to see our final schedule since we still 2 open dates but 5 home games right now.

Watching the Montana State vs Sam Houston State on ESPN right now. Its an interesting game because SHS is rolling by MTS 21-6 in the half. I think this shows we were underrated as a team. We played so much better than What Montana State is currently playing like.

Lets see if they can pull a second half miracle

Coaching changes at Coastal also. Our two strongest rivals both take a hit.
Obviously, we do not know how the new staffs will do, but usually difficult at first to get things headed in
the right direction. Slightly different in the case of these two programs. Rocco left based on his success.
Not sure why Coastal made move. They are fairly competitive. Their message board has made reference
to money being an issue.

I read somewhere that CCU's football attendance was something like #120 out of 125 teams, and the school needed to make a change to create some more revenues.

CSU maybe, but not CCU. CCU outdrew us.

Correction re. CCU attendance post: "Of the 125 FCS schools, our spending on football operations is easily in the top 20. With that investment, we expect to annually place in the top 20 programs, with sights set on competing consistently for the FCS playoffs and national championships.  That is simply not happening. In addition, when you look at our record over the past five years, we have beaten only 3 teams that had winning records. Our attendance at games has fallen sharply; we sell about 50 percent of our available tickets. It is imperative that we find a way to create excitement around our program, attract more fans to Brooks Stadium, and increase our revenues to offset our expenditures."

Yeah Coastal which averages around 8K and Liberty16K totally outdrew us so I don't think they are 120 of 125 in attendance.

BIG TIME hire by Liberty. He did a great job at Buffalo, and probably didn't get a fair shake at kansas. To get a former big 12 head coach is impressive.

Smart move by Liberty to act quickly. Allows staff to lock down prior verbals and get to work on down the road recruiting. His name recognition will open some more doors. The jury still should be out on his coaching.
Past results are spotty.

The other announcement looms interesting. Might be premature to think of elevating the program to FBS.
Bit I guess we will see.

It's pretty unbelievable that Jackolski is 16 in FCS history for all purpose yards considering he spent his sophomore year at Hofstra on the defensive side of the ball. I really hope he gets a chance in the NFL. I'm confident that he could contribute if he finds the right the fit, something like the Patriots who manage to use undersized guys like Welker and Woodhead.

Yeah, I can see how Jackowlski reminds of Welker. I thought I read somewhere that Jackowlski has 4.3 speed in the 40 yd dash...not sure if I read it on this board. With that number, and his accomplishments, he's surely going to get some good looks.
Title: Re: 2011: Season Complete - Thoughts on SBU Football...
Post by: sbufan on January 14, 2012, 08:31:19 am
He ran a 4.3 going into his senior year at UConn recruiting camp (they offered him a scholarship there). He's put on 30 lbs since then, he's an honest 200 lbs now, so I'm not sure how that's affected his 40. Regardless, he's a pretty incredible athlete. I think he's got a similar build/athleticism to Welker. I'm sure he was a lot of work to do as far as route running and his hands are concerned, but he could potentially be a solid slot/third down back. He's also won't turn 22 until september. I don't know if that helps or hurts him, but it's shocking how good he has been both in high school and college considering how young he has been at both stages.

Too many teams with similar records ahead of us, and playing in tougher conferences. The close escape against Albany didn't help. I think it's almost impossible for a Big South team to earn a Top 10 ranking, but 12-15 is a real possibility (I'd almost say expectation!) for next season.

I honestly think we should start next season with a top 10 ranking. We were a borderline top 10 team this past season and we return a lot of talent.

We opened a lot of eyes with the tight loss to SHSU, and when they made a strong run, it helped our cause.

I think we're sitting around 18 to open the season, and with a couple of breaks we could be in the top 10.  I just think there is no love for the Big South.  Yet.  Last year, Liberty at it's peak couldn't crack the top 10 and they had 3 first team All-Americans drawing attention to their team.  Now being a top 10 talent... thats very possible.

Pre-season ranking is more about respect than about how good the team is. But what I really care about is that we build on this impressive season. Advancing to the second round or going farther is what I truly want from this upcoming season. The least I'll ask is another Big South championship berth and NCAA bid. This team is going to be good and this is Stony Brook's chance to establish itself as a National power in the Championship Subdivision (D-I AA)

For what its worth, i watch the men's lacrosse recruiting pretty closely.  They are pulling in some laxers that have great resumes, literally almost every kid is a star RB or QB.  Here's the latest they signed: http://sayville.patch.com/articles/sayville-s-ferreira-named-nys-co-player-of-the-year#c

Now again, i know the program is much better than it used to be, and this wouldnt be a big deal compared to where they are now.  In fact im not even sure why i posted this, just for fun.  GO SB

It's interesting (actually puzzling) that a star QB who is NYS Player of the Year would sign to play lacrosse instead of pursue football at the college level. Glad SBU got him, regardless of the sport.

Long Island Football have never really produced D1 talent.  Sure there are few players a year that go D1 but just look at the top two RB's in Suffolk County last year...Stacy Badell is going to UMass and Datlon Crosson is going to New Hampshire.  These kids were studs and they were not really recuited by DI programs.  I believe UMass just moved up to D1 and NH is still 1AA.

I would guess some of these kids would rather go to a good D1 Lax program and play than go 1AA to play football.

Yeah, Ferrara put up incredible numbers during his football career, but I'm not sure how much D1 interest he generated. I do think it's a great sign that sign that Stony Brook lax is signing stud football players. Imo the best college lacrosse players are the ones that could have played football in college. I'm sure Priore would be happy to have guys like Tundo and Andreassi in his locker room.

Yes you can play both.  Mark McNeil plays both for North Carolina (middie & wr). Also just a thought, I did not think Brock would get drafted, thought he might get a look in camp.  But what got me was that the Patriots drafted a kid in  6th who played rugby at Ohio St.  Only played football as a senior and only played special teams.  Just saying if that's the case why not Brock the kid was an all american and would be able to play special teams.  The Rams drafted a corner from Presbyterian in the 4th.  Stony Brook put up 42 on them w/Essington throwing 5 td's.  So this tells me that you couldn't cover or tackle our guys but yet you get drafted in the 4th, makes no sense.  Only positive is that there were quite a few D1aa players taken w/ the Rams pickin 3.  Hopefully next year we get more looks.

Sure- a local named Doug Shanahan played both at Hofstra.  He was the first Tewaaraton winner.  He ended up in the Jets camp, left, now back in the MLL.  Will Yeatman, a kid at Brown recently, im sure there's some at the military academies, etc.  Even Eric Hatkewitz did 2 years at safety for SB.  But back in the day, this was WAY more common.

But literally every kid coming to SB Lacrosse (check the recruiting threads or the alumni site) has a fantastic football background.  Just thought that was worth mentioning.
