by way of rankings... not that this stuff even really matters, especially this early: http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/football/fcs/fcs-coaches-poll

a measly three votes!

at least STATS gave us 35!

Well, Towson got 13 votes.  So, I guess that means we have a chance to move closer to the actual list this week.

The polls are dumb as hell this year. Teams barely moved around at all and I'd wager most of the voters don't even watch FCS games. New Hampshire and North Dakota both got thumped and barely moved. Idaho State beat FBS Nevada and barely moved. They're just dumb this year. Take care of business and we'll move up. The only ranking that matters comes the third weekend of November (or somewhere around there).

True. Look how UA got snubbed out of the playoffs last year, and even with beating UB and earning 7 wins!

in terms of SoS, it's good that right now:

#1 JMU
#6 Richmond
#8 Nova
#16 UNH

20 votes W&M
13 votes Towson
2 votes UA

the STATS poll is similar but also has Maine getting 20 votes, Delaware getting 7.

Just tuning in now at the half. Stadium looks empty despite Towson being a solid opponent and the wealthy relatively favorable.

Just got home and it was empty tonight  why I don't know. CAA game , great weather and  I guess we had 5k  maybe .   Anyway tough win but a win non the less . Towson played well and had a  few chances to pull ahead.

Just go back to the Bx from the game. great day for football but weak attendance as others pointed out. But we got a W. 2-0 in the CAA, 3-1 overall. Not the most exciting game. But I'll take it

Albany with a big win over Nova tonight

I think it's time to come to terms with attendance. We may never get the attendance we desire... This Long Island market sucks

Here are the home opener attendances for some of the local schools:
Fordham - 3,029
Columbia - 4,101
Monmouth - 3,898
St. John's- 0*
Hofstra - 0*
I think Stony Brook football (AD, athletics staff, coaches, and players) do a horrible job in promoting their team
This athletic department tends to rest on their laurels and just thinks the students and community will come rushing to their event.  The football group could learn a lot on how the Wlax coach promotes his team through social media.

Some schools had football games at 6:00 last night. That really hurts the fan base. Thats why I didnt make the game and about a dozen other SB ticket holders, I personally know couldnt make the game neither..

The  Athletic Dept  still doesn't promote their sports very well .   Yesterday  was Community Awareness at Stony Brook . It was the first one ever held at school that's been there 60 years.  I  understand it was a good  turn out and will be held next year. But they sent no  to flyers to schools and minimum notices to community organizations . So  the problem is school wide not just athletics .   Very frustrating .

its the same discussion over and over again.  6k fans at an average SB event means 500-1000 students, the band, and then 5k from the local community.

which begs the question.  a student base with 25,000 students can only get one out of every twenty five to show up?

yes.

why?

because football is on a weekend.  and the other 24 arent going to drive to campus from queens to watch football.

Here is one issue in August every year Nassau/Suffolk/CHSFL hold their kickoff meeting all the HS Coaches gather that would be the perfect night for someone from the ticket office to attend and offer packages for HS/JHS to bring their players at an affordable price. I think if schools are given that option and they don't have game why not go and they could get introduced to SBU Football

I was at the game- obviously the attendance could be better but 6PM games on a Saturday are a tough sell for a lot of people. Like hammer said, because of Rosh Hashanah a lot of games were scheduled for Saturday night. The crowd that was there was a good group. I gotta say the new seats in the north end zone make the stadium look less full because the folks that sit there would otherwise be filling the seats elsewhere. Anyway, as somebody who's been going to games for a while I think the attendance is what it is for the time being. The growth in the program is going to come from the community, not the students.

CAA attendance:
JMU 25,330 (they're as ready for FBS as any)
New Hampshire 22,135 (Homecoming)
Richmond 8,207
Albany 6,866
Stony Brook 6,672

Onto the game, was pretty darn impressed. Carbone has proven me wrong- he's making a lot of throws he simply could not make in previous years. The TD pass to Bolden was absolutely perfect and the TD pass to Jackson at the end of the 1st half was placed perfectly. Liotine and Bedell are a great 1-2 punch. The offensive line is getting better by the game. The D-line got an OK amount of pressure but they're missing Valentin.

Towson is a solid team and this was a good win.

Great to win the game close like that. Carbone going 22-30 with 2TDs!??!? That kind of play will make us a competitor. He's really coming into his own.

I find it unreal how UNH can get that many people. I'd love to see pictures of the crowd. JMU will be the next FCS program out the door to FBS. They can be competitive TODAY in CUSA or the Sun Belt.

Forgot to mention the most important think, Marc Nolan is an absolute beast. He is the best punter I've seen at Stony Brook. If he keeps it up, he may have a chance at the next level. He really placed some punts perfectly last night.

Local College football is not a big draw on the island; you have more population then the whole maryland, DC & NVA market & the school cannot draw 10,000 from the area on a Saturday.

Fans drive 2hrs dwon here to go watch a game in the area; football & tailgating is bigger the more you head south.

Towson does not have a great team & we had difficulty with handling the play action from Towson; it's something we need to work on.   I also wish we would use the TE & Slot more in our game planning; we have a night mare match up & we are not using it effectively.

It will force the DB to back of the line & open up the game even more.

echo the carbone comments.  much better arm, much more confidence.  and how good is our running game?

towson runs that really nice reverse, good fake handoff from the QB.

in other news.  we made the top ten on ESPN, but it was the one-handed towson catch over the middle, not our play.

Congrats to #10! To go through what he went through last year in terms of production and be able to come back and perform at a higher level this year with confidence and enthusiasm is really impressive.  I am very happy for him.  I hope it continues.

I dunno, he was in workout pants and moving around pretty well. I hope its something short term- he's a beast on our D-line when healthy.

My last statement about attendance, at least in this thread.

In 2014 we had our best average attendance despite having a so-so team that year. But the tailgating was great, parking was free, and students were given some freedom to party up and enjoy the fall days in LaValle's parking lot. I had a group of alumni 7-8 tailgating together.... Even frats and DJs were showing up.

The year after that the school makes a bunch of reforms and kills the tailgating experience and prices out a bunch of season ticket holders out of the main lot. WHY? For a few thousand bucks? Is that worth it? Killing the season-ticket holder/student experience for a few thousand bucks?

Students will not come to a College Football game if they don't find it fun (unless they are fan of the sport). That's the bottom line. We cannot blame them for it. If you are not a fan, why else would you show up? Make it fun darn it!

The University and the athletic department have to strike a balance between a family-oriented game-day experience and a college-student oriented experience. Not everyone goes home on weekends. Every time I walk through the Brook prior to gametime I see students everywhere. I see kids in the dining hall, library, out enjoying the weather... Probably about half of the kids that live on campus stay on weekend. This perception that everyone goes home is FALSE. It's simply NOT fun to be at the game. You cannot even have a sip of beer in the parking lot before the cops make a fuzz about it.

The only reason I drive from the Bronx all the way to SBU it's because I'm a fan of the sport and of the Seawolves. But you cant expect the average causal fan to have the level of commitment we have here. It's not going to happen. We need pro-attendance reforms on campus, urgently!

Spot on ecasdoSBU.. You nailed it. SB raised the parking this year to $125 for the season. In the grand scheme of things that's cheap compared to other universities. But for some people, thats expensive. I did notice that there quite a few empty lots around out tailgating area..

SB is light years away from being a big time football school, so they really need to put a leash on the price increases for tickets and amenities, otherwise your casual fan will not attend and the fan base will diminish back to the dark days..

I agree with all of the above.  I park  in the railroad lot  and refuse to pay . If we get an invite to the SEC or Big 10  I may pay. We as an athletic program need to be careful  with pricing and charges.   We and FCS program and in the America East.   We need  folks in the  seats which are still cheap not paying for parking other add ons  of tailgating .

If you guys remember a few yrs back there were a lot a season ticket holders complaining that they couldnt get a spot in the front lot if they didnt get to SB early. As to the students and fraternities go, at 2012 , 2013 homecomings there were a bunch of fights and bad drunken behavior. I get it I went to SB but if they were going to make it family friendly they needed to clean up the behavior. As far as the family tailgaiting area I agree that they should move the Seawolve town stuff onto the grass behind the scoreboard. Then if they want they could charge say $10 a car to park in the tailgate area. Lets remember they dont have to let anyone drink beer being that it is a college campus. I pay $60 for parking in the lot next to the infirmary. Its only feet away from the seawolf town spots. I think 10 bucks a game is fair to tailgate. I agree $125 is too much but again that was in response to season ticket holders bitchin about not getting spots. I was told this by Christina who used to work the ticket office. So u cant have both, either u welcome families in or u let the students go nuts. Remember they are not going to make money off the students.

$125 for parking? For season ticket holders?!?! As said that's ludicrous. We need people to show up and that's nuts. The SBU administration has always made boneheaded decisions that stifle the growth of the school and athletic programs and that's one of them.

Here's another bonehead thing that the university does the HS in Suffolk County have 6 games that are played at Lavalle Stadium the 4 Suffolk County Championship and the 2 LIC Championship games they have to pay $60,000 for those 6 games now section XI is thinking about not coming there anymore it won't happen this year but you can bet that it may happen in the future
