The following is the game thread for SBU @ Sam Houston State... Go Seawolves!
-
Hella excited about this game, how many SBU fans do you expect to travel to Texas?
-
I wont do the trip. not many will. I am a big fan. But making the trip down there will be exhausting. The end of the semester is coming and I have to remain focused. Still, I will set up a viewing in my Building's Lounge so that those interested can watch! Go BROOK

I'd expect it to be mostly players family. We do have a couple players from Texas so hopefully those guys can bring a crowd, but in general I don't think there's going to be very many there. What do expect attendance to be?
-
Well, attendance is a touchy subject around SHSU. The actual attendance number seems to be far more than what's published. So if I had to guess, I would say around 7500-8500 fans, not including SBU fans. It's hard to tell with the semester coming to a close. Hopefully SHSU fans will turn out, especially since this game will be the poster child for smash mouth football.
-
Congrats on your program's and the Big South's first ever conference win. Now go down to Texas and bring back another W!
-
Thanks for your support ! This is going to be an interesting game Saturday, I honestly feel we can win this one.
-
I'm trying to stay positive. We took Utep to overtime. I have to think Utep attracts better talent than Sam Houston. Sam Houston will throw different looks at us, but I don't think they are head and shoulders more talented than we are. With a good gameplan and good execution, I think we could pull out the upset.

Me too. We need to play better than last we did on saturday, but this team has the talent and the coaching.
-
Well. I originally though that we were going to be abused... But hopefully it turns out to be the total opposite. SBU should go down there and compete and try to win. It is the #1 seed which still hasn't lost a game. We can be their first loss. I'll be positive about it!
Go Brook

To be honest I think SHSU is overrated. They haven't really beaten anyone.
-
I think they are good- based alone on the fact that no one has beaten them, they are #1, etc.
SHSU beat New Mexico (FBS), and crushed Central Ark (top 25 FCS). And crushed everyone else. SB lost to Brown (though close), Buffalo (though FBS, awful game), and UTEP (though a respectable showing).
They are in an arguably tougher conference. Thats gotta go for something, week in and out.
My only prediction is to take the over! Whats that you think, like 80? 90?
-
I don't disagree that they're good. You have to be to go 11-0. Yes they beat New Mexico in OT. New Mexico is 1-10. Yes they have a better league, but not that much better. You guys can beat them.
-
Everybody who follows SHSU/FCS football closely knows we got one hella tough game come Saturday. Yes our SOS is weak, but that's out of the players hands. They more than made up for it with the scoring margin. Also, I know UNM lobos are a weak FBS squad, but we still hung 48 points on THEIR field during THEIR homecoming. IMO that is impressive and negates any overrated comments.
-
"My only prediction is to take the over! Whats that you think, like 80? 90?"
Pulled this off katfans.com
"The Kats are 10.5 point favorites over SBU and the over/under is 63.5."
-
Oh sure- i agree- i probably should have used one of these:
;D
-
I wouldn't say they're over-rated at all. The Team is undefeated. Has played great so far. I dont know much about them, but just looking at the margin of victory shows this team is no Joke . Also, a look at Conference RPI's for Division I football places the Big South ahead of only the Northeast Conference. Southland is a significantly stronger conference.
Still, the game is decided on the field and a lot of variables take part in the outcome. So SB can do this. Go Brook!
-
Personally, I have really gotten tired of hearing SOS. As I have stated before on other boards, it is tough to go 11-0 at any level, strong or weak schedule. If you dont know much about this team, here are some quick facts...This team is damn good. Ton of team speed, balanced on offense and a very aggressive, tough defense. This team will hit you in the mouth, then hit you again.
Quick stats...(National Rankings in FCS)
OFFENSE
#2 Scoring offense 39.0 ppg
#25 Total Offense 414.0 ypg
#7 Rush Offense 250.0 ypg
#3 Pass Efficiency 160.1 rating
#7 Sacks Allowed .73
#2 Time of Poss.
DEFENSE
#1 Scoring Defense
#1 Rush Defense
#2 Total Defense
#2 Turnover Margin
#3 Turnovers Gained
#2 Pass Efficiency Defense
SHSU is not only good, but they are young. There are only 12 seniors on the entire roster. Biggest makeup of the roster is with 43 freshman. This team should be damn good over the next several years. Our three main playmakers on offense are all sophomores and two of the three were All Southland Conference Perfomers,
RB Tim Flanders ---- Southland Conference Player of the Year
WR Richard Sincere-- Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year
The other key to this teams success this year is the lack of injuries in key areas. SHSU has been very fortunate in this area. Both teams seem to be evenly matched on paper. Lets see what happens on the field. Its a long trip from NY to Texas.
-
And the trip back will be even longer for SBU fans ;)
-
An interesting stat that I saw on anygivensaturday is that SHSU has only faced one rb with 700 yards or more. They haven't seen backs anywhere near as productive as either Maysonet (1500) or Jackolski (1300) . I think they're going to be the most athletic defense we've seen all year but our offense should have a considerable size advantage over their D.
-
GO BROOK!!!!!!! (Just felt like posting that... lol)
Days away from our biggest game ever. The hunt to reach the Elite 8!!!

Just because SHSU only faced on RB that had over 700 yds doesnt mean a thing. Over half the teams in the SLC throw the ball a lot too. Tx State has some very good RB's and they got shut down. The thing about the SHSU defense is that their base defense already has 6-7 guys crowding the line of scrimmage and they are able to do that because the secondary plays incredible man defense. Not to mention, they constantly rotate players in and out . Not saying SB running backs wont get some yards, but I promise you this defense will be ready for the run attack.

I don't know much it'll help but Stony Brook sees opposing teams crowd the line of scrimmage every week. My guess is that we play a lot of multiple tight end sets and we'll just try to push you guys around, 4 yards and cloud of dust type offense. That's what I think we'll need to do if we're going to win. I'm excited for the game. I have no idea how it will turn out, but I'm excited to see how our run offense and defense can do against the best run d and a top 10 run offense. It should be a good measuring stick as to where we are as a program.
-
SBU Fans, Come down to the stadium Friday morning at 10:00am as we send the team off to Texas!

Spoken like a fan. SHSU has not seen backs like Maysonet and Jackolski. The run game will not get shut down, and if SB doesn't commit T/O, I think most will be surprised at how you guys play. I wish that I could get the game on the tube, but I think I'll just listen in. There are a fair number of Liberty fans rooting for your team.

I am not discounting the Stony Brook RB's at all. Stats dont lie at what type of backs they are, but I dont people need to discount the SHSU defense. SHSU probably hasnt seen RB's this season like these RB's, but I will bet that the SB offense may be suprised by the speed of this defense too. Should be a good game. Hope to see some SB fans at Bowers on Saturday and maybe a few will stop and tailgate a little. Safe travels.

From today's newsday:
"Does that mean Stony Brook's running game will be thwarted?
"If you look at their film, nobody tries to run the ball against them,'' Stony Brook coach Chuck Priore said. "So, at the end of the game, it's 22 carries for 55 yards. We're going to put the ball in our kids' hands 45 times, average 41/2 to 5 yards a carry and that's going to equal 180 to 200 yards, so the answer is no."
http://www.newsday.com/sports/college/stony-brook/stony-brook-will-stress-run-vs-sam-houston-1.3357650
Priore is typically a no bs kind of guy so if he says we're going to run for 180 to 200 yards I have to think he has some confidence that we'll be able to move the ball on the ground.
To the SHSU fans, I don't think any of us here mean any disrespect to you guys. You all have had one hell of a season so far and obviously have one heck of a team. I just think a lot us feel that Stony Brook can play with anyone in the country. We'll find out on Saturday.
-
At this point, SB can't lose. Just by making it to the second round of the playoffs is a huge recruiting tool. Losing to the #1 team on their turf, even by a blowout, wouldn't minimize that. Of course I hope for a victory, but would be fine with a competitive loss by two touchdowns or less.
-
Priore doesn't tend to speak much about the upcoming games... It surprises me that he did this time. I hope they can find a weakness to exploit...
-
Had a good chat with Miguel Maysonet. A lot of people asked questions so check it out:

If they load up the box as I'm sure they will, Essington can go play action and unload down field. Should be interesting.
-
anyone watching the game at the Bench? Seems like SBU alumni Association is planning to watch the game there!
-
Also there is a viewing in the city at the Village Pourhouse on west 46th (restaurant row).
GO SB
-

34-27 SHS W Final
Awesome game. Went down to the wire. We put the #1 to a big test. They won, but we Stony Brook fans have a lot to be proud of.
Look back at all the victories and the amazing season! Go Brook
-
The game was winnable, but the score was better than any of us could hope for. I'll be rooting for SHSU to win it all and make the Wolves look even better. This bodes well for next year, and I think we can expect SBU to be in the Top 20 all next season.
-
We loose Jackolski. Thats big. But we should have a great team next year. I look forward to another great year of SBU football. What makes me feel even better is that for the first time I'll be able to contribute. I'll be buying my season tickets asap, almost a graduate!
Go Brook.
p.s: I'll be rooting for Maine But also want SHS to do well.
-
Would have liked a close win but we put a great fight. The future looks bright plus alot of veterans return next with play off experience now.
-
Seawolf fans - Great game. You guys have a pretty darn good team. Great fight on the road. I wish you luck next year.
-
Thank You ! Good Luck going forward in the play offs. Make those other programs believers .
-
No shame in the way we lost. SHSU is a very good team, and we missed a few opportunities that ultimately killed us (Essington to the TE for the TD which we had to take a FG instead is the prime example).
It was a great year, and our guys should be thrilled with what they accomplished.
-
Thanks GtownKat! Im hoping we see the Kats again next year in the tourney! Scratch that, lets schedule a non-conference game and get some recruiting done down in Texas! 8)
After much debate, it turns out, that SB was in fact ready.
-
Yes we were !
-
Just saw this and think it's pretty sweet.

I think Norrell is going to have a huge year for us next fall. You could tell he was getting better every week throughout the season after missing all of camp with an injury. Give him an extra year in our system and on our strength and conditioning program and I think he will be special.
-
Thanks for the video. Sweet indeed!
-
WHAT A PLAY!!! When that play happened. WE all jumped @ the Bench Bar. The bench was so packed that day. Amazing. Wonderful time. Hopefully we can have more good times like that in the future
