Disappointing end to 2016 needs to go behind us. Let's start with the constants: we graduate Schultz, Easty, Sichenzia, Rogers, Hughes, Rock, Curry, Oliveiri, Fleming, Buron.
We should be returning: Bitzer, Corpo, Chicquen, Reh, Lindsay, Abdellatif, Ellis, Pugal, Robison, Anderson, Rees, Randall, Macie.
Sheets and Daly got some time over the last season or two, maybe a little for Roros. There's a host of young guys and then of course, freshmen:
82 1 Haun, Tom Holbrook NY Sachem North NY Attack E Stony Brook
238 1 Byrne, Aidan Niskayuna NY Niskayuna NY Attack E Stony Brook
1065 1 McLean, Brody Toronto ON St. Michael's ON Attack E Stony Brook

195 1 Rope, Mackenzie Pitt Meadows BC Pitt Meadows BC Midfield E Stony Brook
196 1 White, Wayne Huntington NY John Glenn-Elwood NY Midfield E Stony Brook

Damn...that's a lot to lose.
I wonder who steps up on attack. Bitzer, Sheets, Howell, & Ozsvath? Fingers crossed the new Brody is like the old Brody. Could see Bitzer going back to Middie
Randell and Anderson down low. 3rd spot up for grabs
Corpo, Daly and Chicquen at Mid but I could see Reh playing O Mid too
Set at FOGO and goalie. Wonder if Johnstone comes back? Plenty of shorties too
Can't see the team being as good as this season but hope I'm wrong.
-
They should be solid on the def end. Keep Reh doing what he does, he's all-american caliber at it. Rees and Anderson are two of the best LSM in the country. Maybe Talay and Seaburg get at shot at close d. I'd like to see Bitzer go back to mid with corpo and Roros. I like what I saw from Roros in the scrimmages. Maybe run a true 2nd midfield with Daly. The freshman White coming in is a great athlete. Chiquen would be a nice attackman along with maybe Howel and Orzath. The kid Haun from Sachem is pretty good too. Robinson , Ellis, Pugal anchor the rest of the d. Just my thoughts.
-
not sure where this ends... but in the last two weeks, zimmerman (BC), curtis (VT), nelson (Bingo), and lawrence (Hartford) all resigned.
-
That is strange for a league to lose 4 coaches at once.
-

Would love to make it 5. Hard to see both Sowell and Tiffany in the Quarters and Nagle not even making it to the AE Final with "his class". Decent recruiter but below average coach IMO.
-
Dom Starsia out at UVa.
why might this matter? because with 7 open head jobs (possibly more to come?), one move might tip the dominoes...
-
Heard through the grapevine. Navy on tap for October scrimmage.
-
Also, not that we didn't have enough holes to fill. Randall and Chiquen will not be coming back.
-
Where are they going
-
Not sure about Chiquen. Heard Ohio State for Randall
-
They are becoming a juco. Get the players seasoned and off to a big school. First Rowe now Randell.
-
Its all about the right fit. Student athletes come and go all the time. Looking forward to see
how the roster shapes up.

STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES (12-4)
The Good: You finished the season ranked and were in contention for an at-large bid. Challen Rogers was a Third Team All-American, and complemented Alex Corpolongo on the first midfield line.
The Bad: You lost to Vermont in the America East Tournament semifinals, and also lost to Brown and Marist in close games. Matt Schultz and the British Columbia duo, Rogers and Brody Eastwood, are departing, along with goalie Zach Oliveri.
The Future: You'll bring in at least 11 guys next season. That's a good amount. Notables include attackmen Aidan Byrne (Niskayuna) and Connor Grippe (Ward Melville), along with midfielder Chris Pickel (Bayport-Blue Point). And with two western Canadians going, the Seawolves will add two new western Canadians in midfielders Mackenzie Rope (Pitt Meadows, BC) and Harrison Matsuoka (Robert Thirsk, AB).
-
With so many gone to graduation its time for guys to get hungry. We have been pretty set at starting attack
and middies for the last 3-4 years. There are a lot of spots up for grabs. Should be interesting.
Maybe that's why Navy is on the horizon for October, try and get a feel for the roster early.

Chiquen to Jacksonville

Chiquen to Jacksonville
That sucks but I'm sure most kids would rather play for Casey Powell than Jim Nagle

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Craig Gibson, an assistant on the Stony Brook men’s lacrosse staff for the past five seasons, has been promoted to associate head coach, head coach Jim Nagle announced Thursday.
"Coach Gibson is among the best offensive coordinators in the country,” lauded Nagle. “Year-in and year-out our offense ranks in the top 5 in shooting percentage and Man-Up offense. Coach Gibson does an amazing job teaching the fundamentals and our program is truly blessed to have this remarkable teacher leading the way."
Gibson has been at the controls of Stony Brook’s prolific offense since his arrival in 2012. He guided the Seawolves to the nation’s fifth-ranked scoring offense in 2016 (13.31 goals per game) and the second-ranked Man-Up Offense (54.2%), a vast improvement from a team that ranked 29th in scoring offense (9.82 goals per game) in his first season and has improved every year since.
Gibson’s efficient offense revolves around ball movement and taking high-percentage shots. Stony Brook’s offense ranked third in the country in assists per game (8.44) and fourth in shot percentage (35.9%) last season.
Attackmen in particular have thrived under Gibson’s tutelage. Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) finished second in the nation in points in 2015 with a school-record 111, graduating as the school's all-time leader in assists (121) and points (253).
Brody Eastwood (Victoria, British Columbia) led Division I in shooting percentage in each of his first three seasons and graduated as the program’s all-time leader in goals (181).
This past season, five of Stony Brook’s six starting offensive players earned all-conference honors. Seniors Matt Schultz (Smithtown, N.Y.), Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, British Columbia) and junior Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) garnered first team honors, while seniors Chris Hughes (Ocenaside, N.Y.) and Eastwood landed on the second team.
Prior to Stony Brook, Gibson served five seasons under Nagle at Colgate.
-
Congrats to coach Gibson. With the crazy turnover with head coach's this past year
i'm glad he's staying around. He has his work cut out for him this year. Many open
spots up for grabs.

Looks like Notre Dame added with Navy for fall scrimmage.
Here is the press release....
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team will welcome two of the premier lacrosse programs in the country for a fall scrimmage on Oct. 8. Head coach Jim Nagle announced that Notre Dame and Navy will venture to Long Island to play three games in LaValle Stadium.
"We are very excited to have two programs with great traditions competing against our 2017 squad," said head coach Jim Nagle. "It should be a great day of fall lacrosse in the best venue in the country, LaValle Stadium. I know our student-athletes are looking forward to the opportunity"
Notre Dame finished 2016 ranked no. 6 in the USILA Coaches’ Poll with a 9-3 record. After earning the no. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Irish downed Air Force 15-7 in the first round before North Carolina ended their season with a 13-9 upset victory.
The Irish return USILA first team All-American Sergio Perkovic, second team All-American John Sexton and third team All-American goalie Shane Doss. The Irish had five Long Island players on their 2016 roster, including three-time All-American Ryan Kavanaugh from Rockville Center and Chaminade High School.
Navy went 10-4 in 2016 to earn a no. 15 ranking. They upset no. 4 Yale in the NCAA First Round before taking no. 5 Brown to the brink in an 11-10 loss.
Navy’s no. 2 ranked scoring defense was led by second team All-American Chris Fennell, who returns for his senior season. Eight Midshipmen from the 2016 roster hailed from Long Island.
Stony Brook and Notre Dame will kick off the festivities with a game at 10 a.m. The Irish and Midshipmen will follow with a noon start followed by Stony Brook and Navy at 2 p.m.
Admission will be $5 per person.

Should be a great day. We will see what we have or need.

roster is up- some new faces. http://www.stonybrookathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=mlax
Midfield- Ryan Norton (grad student from Garden City)
Defense- soph David Reiter (Syosset), freshman Kyle Christie (Long Beach)
one recruit not appearing on the roster- Mackenzie Rope
-
Roros and Seaberg are both gone.
-
Ben Randall transferred to Ohio State. I guess he wanted to play closer to home but that's a huge lose for the Seawolves

He left when Chiquen left. Tough one on one cover guy.
Tyler Anderson would fill in nicely. Pugel too.

Sucks...would have been nice to have both him and Anderson.
You have any other nuggets on the roster/upcoming season?
-
48 man roster with 19 freshman and 12 sophomores. Should be interesting to see what the line up will look
like next Saturday when we scrimmage Navy and Notre Dame.
-
thanks- still a sizeable and talented upper class!
note that gerstner is listed at defense.
-
I agree. We have enough coming back to compete. Ellis and Sheets both coming back off knee injuries.
Freshman Byrne I believe is out with injury. Do they move Reh to 1st line Middie? Does Pugal and Tyler
Anderson move down low on Defense? Bitzer staying at attack? Does Rees stay on the wing? Talented freshman class could fill alot of holes.
Lots of ??????

Hopefully they continue - they are fun to watch!

Here are some things to look for in the upcoming scrimmages this weekend.
Lindsay won't be back till next semester so we will see who steps up
at fogo. Sheets and Ellis won't be back yet, still rehabbing.Much needed depth
and experience when they return. Look for Bitzer and Corp at attack. Reh could be
on number 1 middie line. Pugal and Abdellatif down low on D. Want to see what
combinations the coaching staff comes up with.

Are there any freshmen we should keep an eye on?
-
good question on the freshmen.
also on the topic of moving positions around- it's worked out before. curry to defense, bitzer to attack (though he was doing very well at mid!), pugal to short, etc.
-
Haun,Vanginhoven and White are some of the freshman that have been talked
about as having a strong early showing. Still have guys like Ozvath, Lloyd and Daly
that can make waves also.
-
yep. looks like on coach sowell's return to SB, haun is having a big debut. also bollinger. https://twitter.com/search?f=tweets&q=%40StonyBrookMLax
both sachem grads... well, different sachems but still sachem.
-
I caught the fourth quarter of SBU-Navy. Haun had two goals and i'm pretty sure he assisted on the other goal in the quarter. He looked pretty comfortable out there. Otherwise I wasn't there long enough and don't have the lacrosse IQ to add much commentary. Hopefully others made it out there today and will report back.
-
Initially, I thought we looked a little young vs. Navy, but the boys were holding their own throughout most of the game. I also felt like they out-sized us quite a bit as well with several guys on their roster between 6'4" and 6'6" just bowling some of our smaller guys over. That'll change once the younger guys put on some muscle I imagine.
vs. ND was a different game and my favorite of the three played. While both sides showed a little bit of sloppy passing and throw-aways early on, I think everyone settled in by the second half. SB came to play.. swarming ground balls, causing turnovers, taking the body when necessary. I liked the intensity. Bitzer and Reh did their thing and were both stepping up. Corpo had an absolute cannon last year but was coming up short with a lot of his bouncers and shots aimed low. The Navy goalie had a good bead on those from the start. Hoping to see him lighting up the corners soon. Anderson playing a great LSM. Daly made his presence known on several occasions. Few other observations:
#19 Maciejewski - Wizard in goal vs ND. Made some ridiculous saves today.
#18 Matsuoka - Really turned it around vs ND -- kid hustled hard
#21 Grippe - Showed some great stick skills. Buried a few past ND's talented goaltender -- definitely one to watch
4th Quarter vs. ND, all gears were clicking. Boys were moving the ball well on O. Defense looking strong. Plenty of work to be done before February, but I liked what I saw today.

http://www.sbstatesman.com/2016/10/09/mens-lacrosse-looks-to-foster-chemistry-in-fall-scrimmages/#disqus_thread
Midfielders senior Alex Corpolongo — known for his outside sniping — senior Jeff Reh and sophomore Ryland Rees will spearhead a midfield unit that will play a more centralized role in a less down-low predicated offense.
-
wow! More than I hoped for. Though the play vs Navy was at times slow and sloppy, I believe
mission accomplished. They played many freshman and in key spots. White at the point on man up,
Bollinger in goal, Haun on attack. With the adjustments that were made between games, moving
Corp back to middie adding Grippe to attack with Haun and just having that 1st game jitters I thought
we played much much better vs ND. Mac in goal is a magician, many doorstep saves. Bitzer solid, Rees solid,
Abdellatif and Pugal down low solid. Corp needs to go back to middie, we need his cannon up top. Reh was his usual
I can play anywhere you want me self. Over all a very good day.
-
thanks! all great info.
IL did a writeup with photos: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/photos-analysis-navy-notre-dame-stony-brook-go-head-to-head/36369
Stony Brook
Like Notre Dame, Stony Brook has some big holes to fill from last year’s squad. The graduating class – which included attackmen Challen Rogers and Cody Eastwood, defender Dylan Curry, and goaltender Zach Oliveri – were key players throughout their career as Seawolves. In Saturday’s scrimmages, the coaching staff used the entire roster and shuffled players into different positions to see what potential the squad might have come 2017.
“We lost that big senior class that scored all those goals. We are just moving guys around to figure it out,” said head coach Jim Nagle. “Top to bottom, I think we are more athletic, but we are a little unseasoned and have a lot to work on. It’s a good group. I like the way they responded today.”
Rogers himself accounted for 22 goals last season and 59 points, production that Nagle admits is unlikely to be replicated by another player on the roster. What he does have is a deep, skilled team that will have to rely on teamwork and chemistry on both sides of the field to find success this season.
“We’re going to be a different team with more two-way potential than we’ve previously had, more by committee. I don’t think you replace a Challen Rodgers,” said Nagle.
One of those who will have to step up is senior Ryan Bitzer. The Riverhead, N.Y., native was a leading scorer last season and showed this past weekend he is still a dual threat with the ball in 6-on-6 offense or transition. He understands how Stony Brook will have to play this season and is looking forward to getting his teammates involved.
“We never really rely on one guy. We rely on one group,” said Bitzer. “We are all about team ball. We all play as one.”
In the first game against Navy, Stony Brook struggled to generate momentum due to sloppiness with the ball and lack of possession. Face-off specialist Jay Lindsay will return for the 2017 season, but is taking a semester off due to his graduate studies.
It was in the second game against Notre Dame where the Seawolves potential new style was on display. They turned the Fighting Irish’s offensive mistakes, as well as timely saves from freshman goaltender Michael Bollinger, into transition chances that ended up in the back of the net. While the inexperienced defense will need time to grow together, longstick midfielder Ryland Rees, Justin Pugal, and other veterans will be pivotal to helping them out and pushing the pace forward, not backward.
“Ryland Rees and a couple of our guys can push the pace in transition. That will probably be our hallmark more than slow the ball down,” admitted Nagle.

SBU fan gear can be purchased from Boat House starting on Monday (store is only open for two weeks). Thought I'd share as this stuff is (curiously) not available through the bookstore on campus or their online store:
www.boathouseteamstores.com/stonybrook
-
I think its not available anywhere else because it is gear intended for the parents.
-
looks like good stuff.
nearly impossible to pick out a lineup this early (or even in Feb!) but what are people thinking? no inside info, just guesses here... there are however a few safe locks. bitzer, reh, corpo. Lindsay, rees/anderson, etc.
sounds like haun has made great strides quickly, and also that grippe will contribute too. sheets is back from injury.
at mid, we run a lot of bodies. heard good things about Lloyd, daly, and Robison. also some new faces that may contribute on offense are matsuoka, van ginhoven, kadnar, white, etc.
for defense, look for abdellatif to move down low and also for pugal to return to pole. not sure on the third spot but would love to see Anderson down there, maybe one of the new faces. either way, with randall/curry departing, we will be BIG down there.
happy to hear anything else you guys have. only 4 months away!
-
food for thought. Bitzer, Haun, Sheets/Grippe attack. Reh, Corp, Lloyd 1st Middie, Abdellatif, Pugal, Anderson down low w/ Mac in goal and Lindsay at fogo.
So many athletic middies to choose from for 2nd line. Daly,Robison,White looks like a good mix. Ellis back from injury for D middie. Rees on the wing.
This group has up tempo written all over it.
-
glimpse at the schedule. same as last year minus marist.
Looks like 14 games 8 away 6 home.

thanks and yes i just saw hofstra's schedule, we are on for tues night under the lights at shuart.
also, navy video: http://www.lax.com/stories/lax-video/us-naval-academy-vs-stony-brook-2016-fall-lacrosse-highlights/
footage shows (note! i didnt say "suggests")- philbin at faceoffs, bollinger in goal, pugal played some LSM, white on offense, saw some cole anderson out there, pedone at short, etc. everything else seems to already have been said.
would rather hear from someone who was actually there!

Philbin did take a bunch of draws but Lindsay took the semester off from Lax to focus on his studies. He will be back in the spring.
-
Yes, Lindsay will be back in the spring. It was a great opportunity for some of the other guys to get a bunch of reps in.
From what I saw at the scrimmage we look to be very athletic. Because of the turnover on the roster I can see multiple
line ups through the 1st couple of weeks of the season. We have enough experience back to compete. Lindsay,Bitzer,Corp,Reh,
Pugal,Sheets,Ellis,Rees,Anderson,etc... Coaches just need to fill in the blanks, and with size of our freshman and sophomore class there
is enough quality to choose from.

What's up with Johnstone? Still listed on roster but doesn't have a # and I don't believe he played in the Navy/ND scrimmages? To me he is the best goalie on the roster.

Johnstone is done with injury. He is still part of team and is doing the video's for the team.

COB you do a great job of getting these threads started. Can't wait to get going. Great news for Reh. He deserves
everything he gets.Don't know what to expect for the upcoming year. We are young and talented, how will that translate?
Who knows. Definitely see us in the top 4 for the conference as we are preseason #3. With Villanova and Yale right around the corner,
with such a large roster I expect that it probably already has been paired down a bit thru fall ball.

Yale is home. 2 a days are over and we seem to be very healthy. Sheets and Ellis are back. Lost the freshman Byrne to
injury, but besides that we look at full strength. Young, but full strength.
Any idea what going on in goal? Always liked Johnston but he always seems to be hurt. Coach seems to like Maciejewski
-
Johnstone is done. I guess he had an injury last year and never got healthy enough. He is doing the team videos.
Looks like Mac is the man in goal. Bollinger looked pretty good in the fall.

23. Stony Brook Seawolves
Smart play and high shooting percentage have defined the Seawolves, who will look different offensively with the departure of impact players, but on defense return a rising star in LSM Ryland Rees.

Any word on the outcome of the 'Nova scrimmage?
-
We lost and I believe the 4 qtr score was 10-5. Could have been 11 not sure. We were down 6-2 at the end of 1. Pretty much played them even the rest of the way.
Tyler Anderson and mark Ellis did not play. With Anderson out we were out of sync on D and it showed in the 1st qtr. We had good offensive sets but could not finish.
Nagel played everyone. Bitzer,Grippe and Vanginhoven at attack. Reh,Corp and Lloyd 1st Middie. Rees,Pugal,Abdellatif down low. Mac in goal and Lindsay as fogo.
As I have said we are young. White, Vanginhoven and Pickel were the freshman that scored. We played a 5th qtr and I believe we lost that qtr 3-0.Lots of playing time for
the young freshman and sophomores. Yale up next.
-
Thanks for that recap. What time is the Yale scrimmage on Sunday? Open event?

Time changed to 11

thanks! some surprises, but not completely out of left field.
I note the defense is all converted middies (asterisk, of course), which was similar to the years past.
who ran pole if Anderson and rees didn't?
not surprised, based on films alone, that CVG got some run, he looks like a nice get for SB.
I wonder if sheets and daly and haun will be in the mix on offense...
also I note oszvath is not on the roster. any other changes?
-
Rees played wing then moved down low. He had a real nice transition goal off of a turnover. Gerstner was there and cole Anderson.
Lots off moving parts, Nagle played everyone. We need Ellis and Tyler Anderson healthy. Lineup is more solid with them in there.
Roster the same minus Ozvath. I think they are just taking it slow with Sheets coming back after a serious injury. Same with Ellis.

time moved back to 12 for Yale scrimmage

a couple of good words about the scrimmage (keep in mind yale is a national title contender): http://network.laxpower.com/laxforum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=61983
also it looks like UA beat up on Colgate, keep an eye on these guys: http://network.laxpower.com/laxforum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=61733&p=1477928#p1477928
of course... just preseason scrimmages... first game next tues!
-
Yes, it is just scrimmage's but I am more optimistic after the Yale showing. Very impressed with our young talent.
Corp,Reh and Bitzer add just enough experience and leadership to guide this very young team. Anderson and Rees are
beasts on the wings. Looks like Nagle is going with two long poles on the wings.Nagle started doing heavy subs about
4 minutes into the 3rd qtr. With Villanova we had a hard time finishing good offensive possessions. That was not a problem against Yale.
Very impressed with how are attackmen ride the clearing attempts. Caused numerous turnovers that led to scores. Ellis still not dressed but
should be ready for the opener. Up next Sacred Heart!!!
-
All great information, very excited for the start of the season. Thank you both for keeping us updated!

I caught a glimpse of the game in the first half when SB was down by 2.. I dont follow SB Lacrosse that much, but why did they struggle against SH? Is SH really that good, or did SB take a step backwards..

I watched around 15 minutes of the game, I was extremely impressed with Rees #17 (Sophomore)! He is a human vacuum cleaner in GBs and has great speed! I wouldn't be surprised if earns at least HM All-America and possibly third team All-America.
The team this year is extremely young with several freshmen receiving significant minutes and looked very tentative when running the offense, but still scored 12 goals. I'll cherish every win this season, especially the ones on the road.
Stony Brook lost a ton on offense due to graduation, while Sacred Heart returned 6 of their top 7 scorers from last season and they had 13 players undergo surgery last season.
Nice win - I'll take it!
-
Here are the guys in the home opener last year for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqVa1i_0OcI
Great picking up our first 'W' of the season. I think the younger guys will settle in and give us a great season... Looking forward to the next game!
As always, thanks to the Chairman for live updates!

a few things... over the years true parity is really getting closer. games that used to be a sure thing are no longer. attribute this to kids wanting to play rather than ride benches. and also youtube allowing coaches to find talent in non-traditional regions.
secondly, this team lost nearly everyone from its starting lineup. AND I note that last year's starting team played all four years, leaving not much PT for the younger guys.
thirdly, with games now pushing up to early Feb (a month earlier), there is a shorter offseason, cold weather, didn't install offense etc yet. Ripe for upset.
I didn't realize 13 players had surgery last season... that's gotta be 12 more than usual no?
frost- youre welcome!

one of our biggest games of the year is three weeks away- tough, tough break for Rutgers- two top offensive players down for the season: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/injury-updates-rutgers-trasolini-to-miss-2017-season-denver-s-pace-bu-s-talkow-more/48368

a few more thoughts... understanding it's one early game against an opponent that's lost 13 straight. http://www.stonybrookathletics.com/news/2017/2/14/mens-lacrosse-stony-brook-takes-down-sacred-heart-in-season-opener.aspx
positive first. haun is going to be a force. he blows by his defenders as if they are carrying barbells. he showed dodges from both x and wing, and can finish inside. CVG got stuck in the crease, not sure if that's planned but his film showed he plays more perimeter.
corpo and reh were clutch when needed. I thought their goalies made some good saves. we are going to run a lot of mids this year. wayne white does NOT look like a freshman. his decisions, agility, ball protection, and penetration look like a veteran. grippe is going to be good with more minutes under his belt.
rees is clutch too. it looks like defense will be a mix of abdellatif, gerstner, pugal, with rees on pole and Anderson moving around. trenkle got on which is a good sign too.
in 2017 and 2018, this bodes well if the lineup stays together and adds news players.
transition was good; perfect on clearing; crisp passing without panic. not surprising considering nearly all of our defensemen are converted middies; so we will have range and tempo.
the bad. two shot clock violations. defense/mids at times left SHU wide open (none are true defensemen). we cant let a mid from SHU score 5 on us (3 in the first Q over 4min). and then let their attackman score 3 in a row in 2.5 min. some easy saves missed. hart and sheets appear hurt, or maybe were dinged up I dunno. our offense is very much dodge first and we had trouble against their shorts (the previous years have fed inside).

Chiquen to Jacksonville
Ouch! Jacksonville lost 17-1 to Marquette (supposedly down this year) at Jacksonville! The coach must have used voodoo to trick the kid to transfer ;D
-
Another transfer in Brian Prestreau (senior at Penn State) doesn't even touch the field as a senior.

UA loses to a "down" cuse by one.

One of nation's top defensive middies likely will play more offense.

nice story on corpo: https://www.tapinto.net/towns/somers/articles/somers-corpolongo-pays-it-forward
On Jan. 20, Corpolongo received a letter from the father of an 8-year-old Seawolves fan, who attended every home game to watch his favorite player. Christopher DeLustro, the boy’s father, said his son, Christopher Jr., has been watching the Stony Brook lacrosse team since 2014.
“We love the father-son time we share watching you and your teammates play,” DeLustro wrote. “We talk about the game, how well you played and what he could learn by watching you.”
DeLustro said his son has been playing lacrosse since he was 3 years old and wants to attend Stony Brook, where he also went to school.
“Every time we attend a lacrosse game, he insists he is going to Stony Brook University just like his favorite player, Corpolongo,” DeLustro wrote.

Casey Powell is on the Jacksonville staff. No voodoo needed.

Nice road win today at St Johns !

Nice road win today at St Johns !
Van Ginhoven #40 is the real deal! This freshman plays with great poise while playing without fear.
-
I shut the game off in the 1st quarter when SB was down 4-0. went outside to enjoy the weather and when I came back inside, Bam!!!! SB smokes SJ. Now thats impressive..
-
in terms of PT, again it looks like pugal and rees on pole, with anderson/gestner/abdellatif at close, mixing these guys in for a 2 pole faceoff (shorty low). it also looks like robison and matsuoka are running d-mid but also some 2 way, hart. daly on second mid with pickel.
good intensity on d today and same for the slide timing. obviously a bad first Q but we just couldnt finish. the one thing we might be missing this year is the outside shot (except corpo). last year we had hughes and rogers. maybe now its lloyd and daly.
we dominated TOP and this will help against UA. grippe is a good off ball player, continually cutting far pipe. if asking how did SJ blow the 4 goal lead? flags. our transition is strong, clears perfect again. our poles and d-mids want to push and we have depth. EMO continues to be a strength.
nobody had more than 1 turnover.
i didnt know CVG was originally from LI (long beach).

watching the replay, macie had a monster second half. 13 assists on 14 scores is nice.
in limited time, i saw some really good play from fraietta.
trivia- when was the last time SB scored 14 unanswered?
-
COTB, would love to know your lacrosse background because your post game analysis is spot on.
I would like to add a couple of observations. Tyler Anderson is a beast when on the wing. When he is paired up with
Rees, wow!! something special. Bitzer seems to be a very steady calming influence with all the young guns we now have on offense.
Mac in goal is crazy good when in a groove.Corp is a true sniper. With our overall team make up, we can not look past anyone.
Lots of close games in our future.

Very nice win on the road against a good Brown team.
-
i said it last year- tyler anderson should be your favorite player on this team. he better make all america this year.
SB moves to 3-0, all on the road, with a top ten win.
physical game (brown had 9 flags for 8min; three unnecessary roughness). up and down, game of runs. not sure if lindsay got hurt but he dominated faceoffs and then all of a sudden we couldnt win one and had our poles attempt to neutralize ottens.
five hat tricks today, not counting CVG's two. :D the next jordan mcbride???
brown's defenseman ntshaykolo is the dirtiest player ive ever seen in 28 years. FIVE flags for 4:30 and he didnt even get called for two more.
pipes. SB hit at least 6 pipes (brown had 2-3). CVG had so many shots on the doorstep, some missed, some saved, 7 went in but he couldve had 12g today.

Will Nags make a change in goal?
-
a few more thoughts...
SB scored 7 in 7min in the first Q.
this game had quite a few faceoffs that went straight to a goal in 7 seconds, possibly 5 or 6. it reminds me of the game 25 years ago.
i also wanted to call out matsuoka- i thought he had a big game today against one of the best all-time offenses.
also haun- 3G, 3A, 6 grounds and 3 caused turnovers, in his third game.
molloy will again be arguably the best player in the country and rees had his hands full; he just backs in (like warney!) and gets off a quick turn & shoot. he's also dangerous on the feed to the low crease when he draws the slide. i love that he got ink this past week about practicing at SB in the offseason (he's a WM guy).
66 shots today has to be a record, no? id love to see a TOP but if it was 38-22 SB, that's nearly 2 shots a minute.
very proud of these guys and seriously impressed what nagle has engineered without rogers, schultz, easty, randle, curry, rock, olivieri, and hughes.
-
still some time but with cuse and UVa losing, and the magnitude of this win, i think we go to 15-16. http://www.insidelacrosse.com/league/DI/polls

no letdowns. let's beat fairfield (not great this year) at home, big game against Rutgers (they're pretty good on both sides of the ball despite missing their two star attackmen), and then a winnable homestand against lehigh and maryland BC.
we could conceivably be at 7-0 heading into hofstra, who beat a struggling princeton today. that's four games in 11 days.

It's not Newsday who's wrong. They go by the information that Stony Brook provides to them.

some well-done analysis from IL: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/analysis-stony-brook-explodes-past-brown-25-17/48491
The Seawolves controlled the ball on offense thanks to a widely spread offense that swung the ball about quickly and with purpose. They moved their shortstick matchups to the strong side and pushed the remaining four players on offense to the weak side, forcing Brown to either cheat over or jump the slide early in an effort to stop the initial dodge, but often the dodger would sling the ball back to X (where the matchup was just as favorable) and look to feed cutters. What was once an amorphous bunching off-ball became death by a half-dozen cuts as players cycled through the middle, cutting and setting down screens to ruin potential slides and switched coverages.
also i liked that SB didnt slow it down, despite controlling TOP.
Stony Brook didn’t slow the pace of the game in that first quarter so much as they controlled it; Brown managed to collect four possessions in the entirety of the quarter, managing to take four shots — Stony Brook took 17.

video at 4:10: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/epoch-ilgameday-recap-army-stuns-cuse-hopkins-dominates-maryland-holds-on/48504
watching video after the fact made me realize that brown had some shorties playing attackmen, contributing to the 13G, 7A they registered. two are freshmen.
then again that's the way they play- offense-minded and push tempo. in fact we do the same- on faceoffs we have a shorty down in favor of two poles.

COB where can i find video of the game

not sure. highlights are above but when college basketball is on, the film crews are booked. i paid $10 to get live video on the ivy network ill see if its archived.

QK #17: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/quint-s-top-20-reshuffling-the-top-10/48508
17. Stony Brook In a game that featured 104 shots, the Seawolves gave Brown a taste of their own medicine, winning 25-17. Stony Brook led 8-0 early. They were plus-6 in groundballs and took 66 shots while forcing five Brown failed clears. The Bears had six penalties in the last 20 minutes of the game — composure and sportsmanship were sold separately on Saturday.

Tough win on the road . Nice
I know Lax!

great defensive effort today, without rees. no flags, kept them to 6 total. gersnter had a busy day clearing up and down. anderson was his usual self. i thought matsuoka had a huge day.
on the other side, we didnt take care of the ball. 17 turnovers is high for us.
behring is great in cage but we just didnt generate the 66 shots we made last week (23 total!). 4-0 but probably wont move up in the polls, considering who is ahead.
keep an eye on that brown/rutgers game, it's tight right now. princeton huge win over JHU last night, we play the tigers in early april.
-
!Nice win as we move tp 4-0 !
-
Great to be 4-0!
I feel sorry for the kid who transferred to Jacksonville, who is now 0-5. Jacksonville was walloped today by a score of 15-3 to Hartford who just lost to Manhattan!!! Hopefully, the kid didn't transfer because of lacrosse! Wow, the lie(s) by the coaching staff must have been huge!

Hi COB,
I'm Zack and I run LacrosseReference. If there are any questions or analyses that you'd like to see tackled on our site, let me know. At this early stage, we are incredibly interested in the types of questions that the lacrosse community muses about in forums like these. As a general philosophy, our aim is to combine ratings, like the one you referenced, with deeper analyses into the mechanics of the sport. Hopefully more emphasis on the latter as we get more and more traction.
Thanks again for reading.

it would be nice if anyone knew if the game is at HPSS, Yurcak, or the lax field.
-
Game will be played at the stadium.
-
thanks- you mean high point right? the football stadium?
weather is supposed to be crappy. i note rutgers has been without two of their top players on offense (trasolini and charalambides) and yet is still somewhat underappreciated at #8.
i also note they push the ball in transition and on defense, might be sliding adjacent. they killed brown on early doubles at 5x5 where its public information that molloy would post up, turn his back, and reverse in. so the knights merely slid from the blindside at x and brown couldnt make the pass behind. proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtKaNYHoc2c&feature=youtu.be&app=desktop
btw brown just lost their third straight, to nova. not good for SB but plenty of time.

Yes, at the football stadium.

Stony Brook getting destroyed 4-0 to Rutgers. Stony Brook severely missing Rees, their best and most important player on the team.
When it rains it pours! It's amazing how muck SB misses Rees. Too bad SB doesn't have anyone close to the talent of Rees.
-
Tough loss. Severely outplayed on all aspects. These are the growing pains.
Next up Lehigh, weather permitting. Hope the game is not cancelled because we need
to get back on the field asap.I disagree that we dont have talent to match Rees. Rees
is very talented but is made better by having Tyler Anderson and Justin Pugal along side him.
Just saying.
-
terrible game. SB hasnt been beaten this bad i dont think in 15 years. anyhow RU is on the rise they looked good in bad weather.

It's amazing how horrible Stony Brook has played without Rees!
UMBC was supposed to fall in the W column for Stony Brook.
. Agreed about Rees but the polls that are playing need to learn to dump the ball off to the O in transisition instead of trying to score themselves. At least 4 times yesterday there were turnovers because of selfish polls. Thats and easy coaching adjustment but one that was never made yesterday.
-
i saw that too- ill advised shots, poles staying on too long after its clear no break (then stifling the slow break), not dishing to a shorty, etc. at fairfield the problem was trail checks. last week it was not getting off the bus.
BC i think only dodged against shorts. this made a busy day for matsuoka. its a tried and true strategy and not sure why we dont do it more.
they'll rebound and be ok.
by the way i thought talay did a fantastic job filling in. plays good position, slides/recovers, clears, uses both hands, etc. depth comes in handy.

-
the offense had some trouble finishing today; washuda is a good goalie and only a freshman.
4th Q was terrible; VT came alive. i thought we got a big day out of matsuoka, haun, pugal, and bollinger. defense got help from the long methodical possessions.
2nd mids got some runs today. this was a much needed conference win.
haun is developing quickly into a multi-tool attackman; a dodger/finisher/feeder, right out of bitzer's playbook. not pretty but GO SB.
-
oh and UML just upset hartford, 12-11.
that makes VT 1-4, and Hartford 1-3, and SB has beaten both. hartford would have to sweep BC and UA and then SB would have to lose one more for the 4th slot. i think. http://www.insidelacrosse.com/team/sbu/17
-
BC upsets bingo. so now we have UA/bingo tied at #1.
BC #3 and SB #4 (2-2), then hartford at 1-3.
BC arguably has an easier (relative) finish with hartford and VT left.

Does anyone know the playoff qualifications. I believe we are in no matter what happens with
Binghampton because we own head to head over Hartford. Does it work that way?

SB is in the playoffs if any of the following happen:
1) Stony Brook beats Bingo
2) UMBC beats VT
3) Albany beats Hartford.

big game against UA tomorrow night... can the wolves get off the schneid?
speaking of UA, michigan just fired their coach after 20 years (14 club, 6 varsity), and marr's name was floated out there: http://network.laxpower.com/laxforum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=61733&start=60#p1509230
pure conjecture, especially noting that marr's daughter is on the UA lax team and he doesnt want to coach against his on at JHU (michigan rival), in fact he dropped JHU from the UA schedule for the same reason.
more names. all unsubstantiated (like the above)- starsia, nadelen, toomey, amplo, cassese, chemotti, polley, bates, deluca, metzbower, wray, pressler, etc.

I agree with the poster on that forum.. SB should be a perennial powerhouse in both men's and women's Lacrosse.. Long Island is a shark breeding grounds for this sport. If SB cant compete in the final four year after year, it's time for a coaching change. Look at Adelphi University. They are a powerhouse in div2 with both women and men's lacrosse teams. Even div3 Farmingdale university has a nasty punch..
-
When Crowley and McBride left the program never really recovered . I agree with that poster we should be a top 10 contender annually at least with the talent pool on Long Island and the support lacrosse can generate. The Ladies team is a monster and years ahead of the men .
-
interesting- ben randall makes first team all america. with a year to go. http://usila.org/documents/2017/5/24//d1AAmerican2017.pdf?id=6

Alex Corpolongo, Stony Brook, M
A big shooter who has trouble creating his own shot is not a unique creature in the pros. However, Corpolongo has a pro frame and would improve a lot of man up units with his shooting. He’s a top ten scorer at Stony Brook from Purdys, NY — expect either Rochester or New York to scoop him up.

Chiquen to Jacksonville
That sucks but I'm sure most kids would rather play for Casey Powell than Jim Nagle
Casey Powell is no longer a coach at Jacksonville :) :) :) :) :) :)
-
Casey Powell was never the head coach at jacksonville. He was offensive coordinator and now has assumed the role as program ambassador. John Galloway is head coach. To his credit Chiquen was named team captain and had 34 pts last yr. I doubt he transfered looking to win a national title. It seems to have worked out for him.
-
I'll simplify this for the ones that need it. No one stated that Powell was a head coach, but a coach. Wow! How many lies did Powell tell the recruits? I guess that's part of the game of recruiting. Jacksonville was looking for stability and a member of their coaching staff lasts only one year! This program is in major trouble, especially with their poor academic standards.
-
Thanks Lax for making that simple enough for those of us who are not on your level. I feel smarter today than I did yesterday. Your the best !!!
